i have a story that i want to share..i got this friend of mine..a really beautiful malay girl..but she have a very chinese look..i asked her if she have any chinese ancestory..she said none..untill one day she explain that her mother actually is a daughter of a malay(her grandmother) & a jap soldier..they didn't married..that jap soldier rape her granny when she was just 17 during that war period..i asked how does she feel about that..& she said..just live with it..with a sad face impression.

Fall of Malaya to the Japs is mainly due to the British force being overconfident and having a poor commander. The Japs however were well prepared, they knew of every single road of Malaya. They have the maps, from Japs spies.

Im british,and singnapore was our greatest defeat, ever.The amount of soldiers captured there was insane and the level of embarasment it caused was one of the reasons why the world no longer feared us.We were taken apart by an army of japs on bikes!.The japs simply came from behind,where we least expected it.However i must say we adapted well after suffering defeat in burma to eventually win the Japs.

Narration is pants . How come the British had no jungle fighting experience and the Japanese had ? Japan , Manchuria or China has no Jungle .The Japs won through superior tactics and agressive manouvring in an alien environment. Percival should have been strung up for cowardice.

If Percival did not surrender, just 1 more day of battle and the Commonwealth would have won. Yamashita later revealed that it was a trick that pulled off on Percival, he was running low on fuel and ammo, enough for only a day, and hand to hand fighting with the British, who were on 'home ground' and had more people, would be disastrous for the Japs.

@akropiss remember in 1941 Hitler wanted to make peace with Britain, had Churchill agreed and america, britain and Germany had united against Russia, there would have been no pacific war with Japan, as hitler was secretly involved with not liking the Japanese. Stalin was assured by FDR and Churchill we would unite against hitler, I still believe the loss of all our Asian garrisons in 1942 can be blamed on Churchill for his manipulation of FDR, and Stalin to place "hitler first."

Percival was a MORON and largely responsible for the debacle.

The thinly-armoured Japanese tanks were easily knocked out by artillery firing over open sights and weren't particularly effective in Malay.

The naval guns could traverse to the north but they were only issued armour piercing rounds.

Singapore was supposed to have fortifications along it's Malay shoreline, but this never seemed to materialise under Percival's direction.

The fault isnt with the troops just the leadership. On the other hand I do believe Percival was doing what he thought was right and its sad that his homecoming was less than warm.

@TheAlliswell Tes you are right. Percival lost most of his army not in battles but in Japanese POW camps. Only a fraction of POW survive Japanese tortures, malnoutrition and tropical diseases. Percival was a pathetic leader.

Poms outnumbered the Japs 3-1....How they lost this battle is beyond me....One of historys biggest Wartime blunders, which cost thousands of lives across SE Asia, the Pacific and Australia....Lucky for us Aussies the Yanks were willing to help out in the battle of the Coral Sea when the English wouldnt send anyone to help us out...

Why yes, it's not like the British forces were tied down in the whole war with Germany thing at the time...you know, when Germany was poised to invade Britain.

You might want to look into the Burma Campaign, where British forces heavily defeated the Japanese, killing 150,000+ of them.

My dad was WOP/AG.He remembers being told(seriously)that the Japanese had bad eyesight so wouldn't be able to fly at night!RAF aircrew had lost their bombers so were ordered to withdraw as would cost food&were untrained to fight like infantry.On the retreat he was frequently called coward by British troops.Many of his friends had been shot down.Also, in peace time he wasn't allowed to enter Raffles Hotel by front door as he was merely a sergeant!His thank you for 'defending the Empire'.

All the guns except for two 15" guns at the naval base had full 360deg traverse. The "guns pointed the wrong way" is a myth. They were used to fire north on enemy troops.

Yea but the myth is actually true, in another way. Because although it is technically true that the guns could fire inland, they were loaded with the wrong ammunition to fire on land troops, the ammunition they had was designed to pierce the hulls of ships and was usless agains Japanese troops

The fall of Singapore to the Japanese Army on February 15th 1942 is considered one of the greatest defeats in the history of the British Army and probably Britains worst defeat in World War Two. The fall of Singapore in 1942 clearly illustrated the way Japan was to fight in the Far East a combination of speed and savagery that only ended with the use of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima in August 1945.

The fall of Singapore was a humiliation for the British government.

This is a remarkable achievement by the Japanese. Yamashita is certainly one of the great commanders in history. He deserves full credit for his part of the war fought with bravery and honor. The opposing commander Churchill with his ideas not to surrender was not helpful.

Yamashita won on a complete bluff. He thought the English had come out to demand his surrender. The Japanese were grossly outnumbered and were nearly out of ammunition.

the allies were still using WW1 tactics at the start of WW2 while the Germans and Japanese had evolved a new type of warfare ie Allied used solid defences lines, so Germans and Jap would just go round them and attack where previously though impassable ie Ardennes or through thick jungle.They also understood the importance of air superiority
