as a gear dog on board the reagan(CVN76) this is what we fear every day we do flight ops. the sad part is i ran hooks and luv'd it for the rush. but they say mech failer maybe. or it could have been set to low for the wieght and or the trap count to high on the wire. and that 1 7/16 inch cable does not give way for no1. our little sayin we had never disrespect the cable. the day u do is the day u get hurt.
@LukeSidler2005 I know of a guy that was standing by two others when this happened to them. He saw it and jumped. The other two didn't see it, and it sliced them in half.
"mechanical failure in the arresting engine" sounds suspiciously general and non-specific. Makes me think whatever actually failed was due to improper maintenance or inspection or something culpable.
that yellow shirt wan't even looking!!!! he's fucking spidey sinces were tingling and he's like holly shit better jump!!!!!!! THATS MY HERO RIGHT THERE!!!
@booya155 This is a F18D. The RAG pilots normally fly alone during CQs. I have many friends in VFA106 and VMFAT101. The cockpit can be seen prior to touchdown. VMFAT101 lost a Delta during CQs that went down in San Diego. I have seen Ambush CQ with a backseater but never RAG pilots on their first CQs. I forget how many Bravo and Delta Hornets Roman has. My sister's boat lost a Super Hornet in the same way a few years back. Both the pilot and WSO got out okay. This was a Delta with one pilot.
@HAWK016 Yeah I paused right there and that's so obviously a one seater it just amazes me anyone could think otherwise. It's not even worth replying to you anymore since you ignore all facts to the contrary and just point to a half-second part of a grainy video clip to base all your arguments off of...Fact is, if they were to use a 2 seater in carrier quals there would have been someone in the back seat, without question.
@HAWK016 This is just sad...Why do you think it's a two seater, hmm? There's absolutely nothing this video (or anywhere else for that matter) to give you that idea. Even take a look at the canopy during ejection, obviously not a 2 seater canopy. Also, VFA-106 was doing Carrier Quals when this happened. If they were using a two seater for that, you can be damn sure they would have had someone in the back seat.
@HAWK016 And if you want even more proof: This aircraft was being flown by VFA-106 at the time of this incident. VFA-106 didn't receive the F/A-18 E/F Super Hornets until a year later in 2004.
@HAWK016 So let me get this straight:, you make a sad attempt at getting your comment to top rated by saying something completely wrong and then I'm the troll for correcting you? Wow...
I was on the flight deck when that happened!! I was actually running the JBD's for cat #2. We was'nt launchin any aircraft off that cat so i got to see the whole thing.
@123MrBurg Ahh, makes sense. I didn't see the afterburners light off so I came to the conclusion they weren't at full throttle. Do you know how long it takes for them to light off?
@Seria17hri11er I don't know, but I think they are almost instantaneous once they are ignited. From what I do know, the moment the pilot lands, he puts the engines at full throttle (not afterburner) until he stops and the yellow shirt tells him to cut engines. The action on deck can seem almost automatic, but nothing moves without being told to.
@humanbeer "How weak the military became under Bush?" what the hell are you talking about? Did George Bush sell the US Navy poor quality cross deck pendants that failed? I have no idea how that comment is related to a freak training accident like the one in this video.
@SuperAncientmariner You'd prefer to get #3, you'll take 2, 4 or 1 in that order of preference. 1 is unadvisable in heavy seas, in fact if the soup is bad enough it's number 4 or waveoffs. A ramp strike is the ugliest result possible of an approach attempt, imagine as the ship moves from trough to trough you are looking at landing on a surface which is losing and gaining altitude of around 30-40 ft all together.
I would not like to be the pilot floating in the cold deep blue sea looking at an aircraft carrier steaming towards you either.its certainly a very risky business.I hope all recovered from this ordeal.
@KiloByte69 You goose stepping conservative bags of shit should try reading books rather than burning them. You dumb cocksucker, KBR is the corporation that you fucksticks have sold the military to. Eat my tits!
Theres a balance in everything spending wise. And both parties are polar opposite. Libertarians need a chance in office, there might be some balance made at that point.
Husband was a "yellow shirt" in Marine Corp......Their training drills into them...."Jump Once, Jump Twice" If you have to jump once you WILL have to jump again. That yellow shirt listened well in class!
It sure looked liked he powered up by his exhaust but powered down when roll stopes as expected! Cable broke but should of been changed after inspection and specific number of uses expended!
@ on second analysis not really shure that he did not power up, the cable held almost to the stop of roll, where pilot apparently powered down thinking he was practically stopped, aircraft was too slow at time of cable break to accelerate to flight speed in the lenght left regardless, sucky cable, lasting just long enough to kill speed then braking at last sec, plus the safety procedure of applying take off power is mostly in case the cables are missed? yellowjacket had the adrenalin rush of life
@undogod Um what you guys don't realize is that by the time he had to power up, he had no room left, he was at the very end of the flight deck and most likely unaware that some damaged could have been done to the aircraft, till you tell me otherwise, I think the pilot did all he could, and those guys are lucky, there was something like this but a few years earlier, and the cable snapped, and killed people, the pilot was able to stop ith only two or three feet of room left
if you read my second comment Im saying what you too say.
if you analyse what I said in my first comment you see I blame the pilot for not being ready to apply takeoff-power earlier, but in the second comment I reasess that the cable lasted long enough to fool the pilot that he had a plane capture so he powered down, then the cable snapped, etc,
so where do we differ and what have I to prove otherwise to you,
@undogod Believe it or not, I saw your comment, and another comment that said the pilot should have been fired for not doing his job right, and I just wanted people to understand, didn't realize you actually understood what had happened
@mirlin235 you are correct in sticking up for the pilot, he had a nasty incident and reacted just right.
Hey I lived in Vancouver, and I know Canada is one of the best countries ever.
Visit my userchannel, if you like, and criticise what we say there, I got a geopolitical channel, the discussion can get interesting and I would like a Canadian viewpoint on geopolitics about North America / Europe and the future of NATO.
@ClaireseLippincott Correct assesment of who fkd up, the pilot should be C martialled causing men to get hurt and loosing a bitchin 18, you're way right, the pilot did not make shure to save HIS own butt by applying takeoff power, who gives that he had enough sense to get scared enough to eject, the yellow shirt is a God reacting like he did... go NAVY go... yea I know the pilot is probably a ok guy, but this erases that...
When a Navy aircraft attempts to land on the carrier, standard procedure is to go to full throttle until the arresting cable has caught the tail-hook. This pilot is what we used to call a, Whisper jet" since the pilot didn't go to full throttle upon touching down. Had the pilot followed NATOPS correctly, this flyer would not have had to punch out, and could have safely gone around for another attempt.
The cables very rarely break, but the landing procedure includes the momentary full throttle.
I like it when she states:" other WELL TRAINED crewmen are not so lucky" and you see a guy in a red shirt cassually leening onto a truck. He was so alert.
@streetstream Haha, I've seen those crash and salvage guys chilling on the flight deck during flight quarters. Sometimes, I wonder if they're even awake under their silver suit and goggles.
No wonder a carrier deck is one of the most dangerous places in the world to work! What were the injuries to the other crew members? Hope there were no decapitations!
@TwentyCharacterLimit Holy shit I've never saw him before after watching this about 5 times. Too busy watching the red guy. Damn the green guy gets it bad though.
Im wondering why the pilot didnt go into full afterburner, I know it prob wouldnt have made a difference since he was pretty much stopped already. but its just strange to see them go to military power and not afterburner.
By the time the cable broke, the plane's speed was so low that even applying full afterburn would have NO chance of saving the aircraft by the time it got to the edge of the deck. There are some videos of F-18s landing where the afterburners kick in as it traps, but it wouldn't have helped this situation at all; energy was just too low, and not enough deck left.
dude these shows get those simple facts messed up all the time. History Channel did a special on the F-14 and said that you had to go to "Top Gun" in order to fly the Tomcat.
Yeah, I see it all the time; it annoys me to no end. I fly for a living, and everytime an accident or incident that gets reported by news or newspapers, they never get it right.

it is a single seat its not a double
zcamarta 2 years ago
Wrong. It was a two-seat D-model from VFA-106.
However, the rear seat was unoccupied at the time.

Im wondering why the pilot didnt go into full afterburner, I know it prob wouldnt have made a difference since he was pretty much stopped already. but its just strange to see them go to military power and not afterburner.
cnknguyen 2 years ago 2
By the time the cable broke, the plane's speed was so low that even applying full afterburn would have NO chance of saving the aircraft by the time it got to the edge of the deck. There are some videos of F-18s landing where the afterburners kick in as it traps, but it wouldn't have helped this situation at all; energy was just too low, and not enough deck left.

@cnknguyen
yea, when you land on a carrier i thought you were supposed to put the throttle up all the way just in case it's a bolter
TheDeViLlIeR1 2 years ago
well you do push the throttle to the max but when the three wire snapped that aircraft was almost fully stopped so not enough thrust to bolter
MurfDawgSC 2 years ago
ok, i understand that now
TheDeViLlIeR1 2 years ago
"Single Seat"...?...... can't they get even the simple stuff right? Look closely...it's a 2 seater.
BA31Driver 2 years ago
dude these shows get those simple facts messed up all the time. History Channel did a special on the F-14 and said that you had to go to "Top Gun" in order to fly the Tomcat.
MurfDawgSC 2 years ago
Yeah, I see it all the time; it annoys me to no end. I fly for a living, and everytime an accident or incident that gets reported by news or newspapers, they never get it right.
BA31Driver 2 years ago
haha, top gun was for elite fighter pilots, the F-14 was the standard fighter- interceptor jet at the time
