  • @SIGNALSTAT Ha Thanks signalstat for the laugh

  • @dmccoig Some Laugh... J.C. passed away a few months back. He was one of the kindest people in town.

  • @Splungers Who is the guy that dresses like Otis? I guess the owner of that antique shop.... Nice town, never did get to see that quarry though..

  • @irish89055 The guy who dresses as Otis is Jimmy Slate, a retired Mount Airy Police officer.

  • I was also just informed that my Papa also went to school and graduated with Andy!!

  • My Father's family lives in Mount Airy. I love it there. This video is a nice one of the town. I have eaten at Snappy Lunch, and walked the down town area, it's BEAUTIFUL. My Granny lives about 1-2 miles from everything Mayberry, well almost everything LOL. I also have a rich family history in Mount Airy. My Papa was the local magistrate and played blue grass & gospel music on the local radio station, my Granny's brother was president of Surry Community College...

  • his daughter also owned a local christain radio station. My uncle is also a surry county sheriff's deputy. The Reeves family owned a mill (Reeves Mill Rd.) and they also have a house on the civil war trail in NC. Even though progress has been made in Mount Airy, the people there are still as nice as they were in Andy's day!

  • This video was Epic. I loved seeing NC history. This made my day and put a smile on my face..Thanks for the time you took out to do this. Merry Christmas

  • Enjoyed the video.

I hope to visit one day.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • rip andy griffith. u were one of the best!!

  • @AntaresInScorpius You saw his commercial too, huh.

  • @AntaresInScorpius Andy Griffith is still among the living. I think the town was very nice and see where the producers got their ideas. Well Andy I mean, not nick the bartender who produced the show. Didn't see any mexicans Bradley, but they are taking over whole trades and towns elsewhere....

  • @irish89055 ive been there myself several times, The strange thing about Mt. Airy is you can walk down main street and its just like you walked back in time to Mayberry, but then you can walk off mainstreet and accidently walk up on a hispanic weed deal. Its like Mt Airy is actually 2 towns, old fashion mayberry down town, little mexico on the outskirts, and a nice wal-mart, and k-mart lol.

  • @ClassicRockfan79 I was staying with a friend in Chapel Hill when we went over to Mt Airy.... in the evening, the Wal Mart over in Durham is like being in Mexico.... Here in Richmond, they are taking over all the trades.... I'm furious and have never been so disilllusioned with this country.. Australia is looking better all the time..

  • @irish89055 well there are reasons that so many of them make it here in america, first all they have to do is find a white woman, get married and then they cant get deported. seems like white women go crazy over them. Then they can get food stamps really easy, They stand a better chance of getting a job because they know if someone dosent hire them they can cry racism and cause problems, they dont have to pay taxes out of their pay, but they can get back tax money every year.

  • @irish89055 i think a major issue of the problem like i was saying is them getting with white women, and basically getting a free american life. as for Mt.Airy, The town is really working to build a mayberry image, but the hispanic lifestyle around that area is killing it. I heard about a shooting between some mexicans took place there not long ago, Outside of town there is junky fleamarkets over run with hispanics. The town council should open their eyes and see its killing the Mayberry image.

  • very hot!!! i wanna ride him.

  • The town is full of mexicans all over the place!, and, cheap trashy flea markets .its a junky town full of mexicans! This Andy/ Mayberry/ Mount Airy tourist stuff is lie..We'll never waste time by going back there anymore. we were really disappointed when we saw it.

  • GREAT video

  • I loved visiting "Mayberry" during the 50th anniversary celebration. A great place, in a Beautiful part of the country!

Hope to go back next year.

Thanks for posting tihs video. Enjoyed it.

  • I wonder, has this show inspired people who watch it to tret kids with love and respect like Andy does in the show?

  • i cant believe i found this video

  • Do you 'pronounce it 'Griffith' or Griffin?' What kind of idiot asks a question like that? SPELL IT!!

  • Ahh to live in that time.

  • great video i hope to go there someday.

  • Mt.Airy NC, i live 40 miles from it, its a shame the way they use Andy as their Cash cow, Walk down main street , they whore out the Andy Griffith show everyway they can, Shirts, dvds, posters, books, action figures, signs, The Andy show theme plays on a p.a. system all over the street, every store has the show playing on a big sreen t.v. Barney and Otis look a likes, police car replica, Sad that Mt.Airy didnt care about Andy when he was a kid working to get a dime to buy an ice cream cone.

  • @ClassicRockfan79 Who gives a fuck

  • @kingofdaherbz do i sound like i really give a fuck? Just kinda looks like it would suck if a whole damn town didnt give a shit about you when you were a kid, but once you grew up and by chance became famous the same damn town makes millions off the work you did.. but i dont really give a shit what they do. Its just the fact that its a shitty deal.

  • @ClassicRockfan79 haha take it easy man your right I was just busting your balls. But It is a shitty little town..

  • @kingofdaherbz well dude i didnt want you to think i was some lame fruit cake sitting around Mt. Airy NC with protest signs saying " You shit on Andy" .... lmfao . But from what i understand Andy did not even want to go back near Mt. Airy for years because they didnt care before he was famous, matter of fact i think he stayed away from there for about 45 years and came back for the first time about 5 years ago. that should tell the people of Mt. Airy something.

  • @ClassicRockfan79 lmao ..This place is for retirement and thats it. Not much going on here for young people!!!where u from?

  • @kingofdaherbz Im from Roanoke VA. Not a wonderful place but its ok.

  • bring back theses old shows and bag what we got now TV of today sucks!!!!

  • lol always long comments on serious topics

  • Great. Enjoyed this.

  • Does Ron Howard who played "Opie" ever come around Mt. Airy to make an appearance ??

  • Ol' Andy has the life---he's been loved by folks the world over because of this show--I watched the episode where Andy trades Eagle-Eye-Susie----his lucky fishing rod and reel to the mayor for the sleeping jacket for Aunt Bea------a really good and sentimental episode------no matter how many times we watch those episodes, we can still enjoy them again sometime----and that;s the beauty of the Andy Griffith Show!!!

  • My mom and I went there about three weeks ago and we had a ball! It reminds us of the simpler times growing up in West Alabama. I learned a lot about Andy being a child of the '60s and didn't know about his comedy recordings and his life story until just recently. It's great to see someone that is a great role model for my generation and generations to come...

  • IM FROM MOUNT AIRYY

  • its really cool over there. nice small town :]

  • I want to visit this town someday

  • good ole north carolina home sweet home im ready to get out of the army and come home...

  • born and raised here in mt airy. ive been in mayberry day parades as opie. i'd give away lemonade the weekend. was free but ppl gave donations cuz i was cute lol. i looked just like opie. did the role from 1st grade til 9th. met rosco from dukes of hazzard, sharlene darline, ernest's son, goober

  • Have a sister that lives in NC...haven't made it to Mt. Airy yet, but it's on the list!

  • I WOULD LOVE TO VISIT THERE.

  • thats funny. i live here in mt airy, nc.

  • @TheCatwoman1996 i libve there u wont meet andy or anything but its awesome

  • nice video im stopping in next time i get out east from cold cold Iowa

  • I happen to hate Mayberry, I've lived here 16 years and I can't wait to leave. Horrible town to group up in, not shit to do.

  • @scruflesthegiraffe You can always go fishing or do a reinactment of otis. im sure they would let ya sleep it off

  • i was born and i live in mount airy best city ever!!!!

  • @aaubball08 its not a city if it were it would not be the best

  • Warren was the deputy after Don Knotts departure. Warren was played by Jack Burns.

  • Am I the only one who remember that after Barney left the program that Andy had another deputy named Wally? I don't think that Wally was on the program all that long.

  • saw that they're fixing up the jail (clip - Andy Griffiths Mayberry Jail Becomes Landmark With Chris Epting). hey locals, when's the last time someone was holed up there?

  • enjoyed the visit to Mayberry very much...great video..Love Andy Griffith forever~

  • I thought Andy Griffith was from Manteo??????

  • that's where he lives now....ummmm

Went up there in Sept. 09, a couple weeks before Mayberry Days... great little town..

  • i live 2 minutes from the locations in the video.

  • As a tourism ad, good. Tourism could help the economy. There are some very nice areas around Mt. Airy as well. Just realize Mt. Airy & Mayberry are not synonymous. I was born there; visited realtives often as I grew -- my uncles were the only opticians in Mt. Airy for many years on a Main St. corner a couple of shops down from the Main Street Grill. Mt. Airy is a typical small town, slow-paced and natives looking to go elsewhere for diversion. Enjoy the whole area.

  • Harvey and Herman?

Mount Airy is the closest thing on earth to Mayberry.

  • Yes, indeed. Harvey and Herman Holland were my mother's brothers -- and Ola Holland (who worked in Belk's alterations department at the mall on Hwy. 52 for many years) was my grandmother. Wow, someone remembers them -- thanks. If you want to chat more about it, just reply.

  • do yall really know anything about north carolina , i say if ya dont live in nc like me dont watch this vid no body wants yall yankies an other southern staters in our town

  • That was a very nice film of mt. airy. I really enjoyed it. Thank you!

Mayberry was a wonderful innocent tv era.

  • Just posted a response. My singing isn't very good but hope you like it. :)

  • i live close to mount airy and there is not much to offer

  • yeah,i live bout 10 miles from mt.airy,on va. line,& this is not mayberry(now) cause Barney didn't have to catch crack whores & the kids weren't having kids...i even graduated from mt.airy senior high..in 82...good luck to you & yours,& Gomer says hey...

  • are there girls working the street?

  • I'd love to live in a place like this....

  • it sucks

  • click on and see my Grandma's moving there check it out.

  • I have to say this is the worst town possible to live in, well for a kid anyway. You have no idea how boring it is....

  • i kno!

  • I live there in good ol' Mayberry.

  • Thanks Gryg73..for bringing Mayberry to me through your channel.. and thank you mccoig for posting this history of Mt. Airy...I have been to Metropolis, Illinois home of Superman and the newspaper is "The Daily Planet"...thanks!

  • I've visited Mayberry several times and plan on going back. I live in Shelby, North Carolina. Love it all, the friendliness of the people, the feel of the town. It truly is like walking back in time.

  • well you havent been to flat rock and the ghettos then you will change your mine worst of all those old racist hags living in mt airy and they r the reason why theres no jobs in it, cuss they wont let big companies establish there, they were mad when TNT took over what selfish hags you know that andy move away from Mt airy cuss he hated racism?

  • I love this little town of ours, it is a great place to live and to raise kids. All of this 'Mayberry' stuff is aggravating for us locals! It's just funny to me that Andy himself has not came back to visit in how many years???

  • OMG what i wouldn't give to have a snappy pork chop sandwich :P, i could down 3 of those in one sitting.

I was born there in 84 on worth street :)

Fannie Sutphin was my grandma, she just passed away recently though, i never got to go to the funeral.

Always liked the sleepy little town :), not much to do, but just a good place to sit back on the porch with a tall glass of iced tea.

I would kill for one of those pork sandwiches right about now :\

  • Simple Times???? These people around this place are as uptight as any larger town or city. And no jobs!! I have lived here all my life and have visited many different places and it's no different. Just a tad more backwards. Charlotte is less uptight than these people. The "Andy" thing is ok I guess for our only claim to fame but he never comes here unless he sneaks in without anyone knowing. No big deal.....

  • i like mount airy but what i hate about it is that becuase of this historical crap we cant have fun, (teenagers) the old folks try to pass laws so we cant hang out no were, live our lifes like we are old 2, bak in 2000 it was ok utnil they took this andy griffith guy 2 serious

  • for real.

  • Hey thanks Christian, we like visiting, but I can see how it would be different if I were young. You arent to far from some great stuff though like Kayaking and mountin climbing, caving, canoeing etc.. you should do some of those things that others dont live close enough to do? Make some vids?

  • I love liveing in mount airy the history and MAHS mount airy high school foot ball!!!

  • Thanks for this clip! Making me homesick! We lived up in Dobson for close to eight years, and the neighbors were truly right out of the show, with the simple pleasures we enjoyed, making music on the cement porch at the old farm, sharing stories and laughing alot! God bless those foothill dwellers! Love from Lois and Larry.

  • This is the best video I've seen about the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History!I work there and it was a pleasure to see Grace Ayers in this video! I've worked with her many times! The museum is a wonderful, informative and beautiful building! Great place to stop by and learn about our history! :)

  • Wow, Thanks Dobby! We think that the museum and staff there are the best in the state, I love how they honor the celebrities, but we learned so much more than that. The folks there are fantastic and the town is first rate.

  • You're very welcome! At the museum they want people to learn about the regional history and not only the celebrities. We have a beautiful history here and it's where all those great celebrities come from! If you know what I mean! :D

  • Oh and Grace and Donna were wonderful, I hope we didn't embarrass Grace to much, but we love the Tennessee Vols and just had to get her ringing endorsement! Woo hoo

(well maybe next year, this year is boo hoo)

  • Thelma-Loo. Where is she today ?

  • I think the actress who played Thelma-Loo is now living in a home for senor citizens (sorry can't remember the name) in Mount Airy. I live in Mount Airy as well and it was a big thing around town when she decided to move here! :)

  • Thelma Lou was back in Mt Airy for Mayberry Days I believe... check her on youtube talking about the town.

  • I live in Mount Airy, NC. It's amazing how many people come here and visit, and tour the historic spots such as the Andy Griffith Playhouse, Blackman Amphitheater, Floyd's Barber Shop, and of course.. the world famous Pork Chop sandwich from Snappy's. :) I'm glad to see everyone looking at the videos on the internet, and getting interested in visiting!

    -Corinna

  • Always very entertaining vids..thank you Dan.I watch that show whenever I can..it always lifts my spirit.

    mamaM

  • you always do awesome videos and this is no exception..keep up the good work....by the way what kind of camera do you use i want one lol mine arent that good

  • Thank You Donna, You are so kind

I use a consumer panasonic 3ccd. I am not sure if mine is that good either, but it will have to do.

  • Thats like stepping back in time!

I'm gonna have to get down there, its looks fun!

  • Thanks 9sec2

It is in the mountains, so either way you cant loose, great places all around.

  • Nice work! I loved The Andy Griffith Show. I'm a redhead so the inevitable "Opie" comments were the bane of my childhood... still couldn't help but watch whenever I got the chance.

    THE RED

  • Thanks BRB, I wish I had the money Opie has ha ha

  • I live like fifteen minutes away! Mt airy is really a bit of a rip-off, everyone around here makes fun of the tourists that think it's so special. its just...boring. We hate their footbal team.. my parents used to live next to andy girffiths childhood home.

  • I think people really love visiting and trying to capture a little bit of the memories of the simple time. I can see if it doesn't interest you that it would be boring. Sometimes we go places that interest me greatly and do not interest Janet. Like Smoking Cool Jeb Staurt's Birthplace! I loved it, Janet was a bit bored!

It's cool that your parents lived next door, did they know Andy?

  • Andy Griffith and Dick Van Dyke are my two favorite shows in the world. I love revisiting those shows. Mt. Airy is so pretty and takes me back to a better slower time, which we need more of. Don't forget Mayberry Days and get a hat, lol. I will be planning on going there too.

  • I know, we are so excited about Mayberry Days! I hope we are able to go.

  • cool yo!♥--Hugz and Positivity--♥ Brittani aka Rhonda Anthony Tanner/R.A.T. Coaching aka B-RAT :)

  • Thanks so much R.A.T.

  • Awesome video and very informative

  • Thank You kjmix,

The folks up there are so nice and it is a great place to visit

  • outstanding job on this video again Dan, it's so nice to see all these places

  • Thanks Thalysiakeuth, very nice of you to say

  • That Was Fun! Thanks Dan!!! It Went Well With My Morning Coffee!! ( : Joanne

  • Thats awesome Jofrelly,

Nice of you to hang out with us as you get your day going!

  • Brilliant work! Definitely a lot of stories in that town.

  • Wow, Thanks gbail

I know there are so many stories beyond what we covered. It is worth checking out the museum. I could spend many hours there.

  • Wow, lots going on in that little town, guess sitting on the porch making homemade ice cream playing the guitar has a run for it's money now lol Thanks Dan,this is great

  • Thanks wott

I love homemade ice cream, (I only read the part of the comments that focus on food ha ha)

  • great video!

  • Thank You Symbioteofadiety

  • cool video thanks for sharing.

  • Thanks You we appreciate the comment joebro

  • i always knew that mayberry was in north carolina, but it wasn't until some time this past month that i figured out WHERE it was.

  • It seems odd, but I remember when I learned of Mayberry or Mount Airy, I always thought it was closer to Raleigh

  • What a fun visit. I sure would like to go there...Doc

  • Thanks DocKnowz,

It is fun to poke around there.

  • Ha ha, I love the Gomer imitation!

We're with you on the show, we probably know them all by heart.

  • You always make top notch travel videos Dan, I love the stories they contain too, with regular amounts of warmth and humour. Keep up the good work my friend!:)

  • Thank You Anthony,

Working on your tv show town, Goathland, made me think that we needed to get up to Mt Airy.

  • fantastic !!! I loved the Andy Griffin Show.....

  • Thank You Scott,

I heard that it has been running non stop since the sixties!

  • Very good! Loved it... Thanks for sharing...

  • Thanks mobiltec

  • This is indeed a place that I would love to visit! But, just in case I don't get there, thank you for sharing it! I was unaware that this existed! Great job as usual, my good friend! 5 nostalgic stars!

  • Thank You so much ETV!

We just love watching AG reruns, we also see a few tv commercials using the old Mayberry approach to advertising here in NC. Mostly just the whistling tune

  • I just shared your great video!

  • No visit is complete without buying the Mayberry hat and a "Goober" hat. We got them both, one says "Mayberry University, Be Someone!" (unaccredited) I love it and wear it often. I'm glad you were able to visit Mayberry!! It is just such a wonderful experience to be there. We almost decided to move there after my daughter graduates, lol. I could drive a police car, but probably would forget my turn signal and get pulled over by Barney, lol. You made my day! Thanks so much Dan!

  • Auuugh we didnt get a hat!

We are going to have to return, maybe during the Mayberry Days Fest later this month!

  • go to a barber in a museum haha. good 5*

  • Thanks Inky!
