Mainly, you have to hold the R-Trigger (Sprint) when pressing the Shot-Stick or X-Button when attempting to dunk. If that's not the case, you have to look at the player's Dunk or Standing-Dunk attribute. If it's not high enough, then layups may be done moreso than dunks even when free.

when ever i attempt to take a layup my player either gets swatted or misses whereas the cpu can take layups while 3 of my players are trying to stop him. why does this happen? and how can i make layups without my guy missing consistently?

Layups are shots also. There is a slight bit of timing too. Dont hold a layup attempt too long or too short.

how do you lay-up, i can never do a lay-up like the cpu. i cant get him to make two steps, even though i press turbo and then shoot.

To attempt a lay-up, DO NOT hold the Sprint button (turbo) while pressing the X-Button or Shot Stick.

If you hold the Sprint (turbo) while attempting a layup & the player is able to dunk, he's going to DUNK! If he's not able to dunk, then he'll just go for a layup.

when you create a player, no matter how you fix them up, they have a tendency to both dunk and lay-up, they do different things gicen the situation, how do you get them to just dunk or just lay-up

Move the Left-Thumbstick in the direction of the offensive player's Left Shoulder to attempt a fancy dunk. It's camera relative but if you move it to the player's left shoulder, it's always a fancy dunk attempt no matter what camera you're playing in.

Should be. Just find a picture of a 360 controller and look at the position of the buttons. It's the same position on PS3 but with a different name.

Not sure of the button combination on PC but whatever the LockOnD button is and the Pass button is, that's the combination to throw an alley. It's the Sprint button + Shoot button for dunks.

and it also happens when I pump fake (even though the pump animation is almost complete)...and when i hit the Y button to gather many times...

Watch when you pump fake. Do it strategically rather than by habbit because the Cpu falls for it a bunch.

I've always been good @ the timing but never knew about ways to counter...but QUESTION:

the 3rd to last (Chalmers) and 2nd to last (CP3) steals you showed seemed to happen despite the ball being in the defenders opposite hand (or trying to layup with opposite hand) so that means good timing and high STL ratings override offensive counters?

It's frustrating bc all my friends know how to do this (because of me) and I get plays where defenders like Mo Williams (Cavs) are stripping Kobe repeatedly

zihinmaster these are really good, but you should really post a video on offense, off ball movement, alley oops, post offense (especially since the post game has been changed drastically since the downloadable patch.)

The NBA 2K9 video tutorials were not recorded on an HDTV and the speed of the game is set to default (50). It's just the people that you see stealing the ball are some of the fastest in the game (Chalmers, CP3, etc.) Notice the difference in speed in the CP3 steal footage vs the B. Roy steal footage. B. Roy was slower due to his speed in the game.
