heres a tip i like to use: before hollowing out, take some stick/twigs, and snap them into pieces about 10 inches long (desired wall thickness). Stick the sticks straight into the pile from the top and all the sides. When you hollow out and hit the end of the stick, you know the wall thickness is perfect. and, upon removing the sticks, you have some air holes, to keep oxygen levels in your shelter steady.
@dudelamp1 roflmfao bears hibernate all winter. Though it is good to make sure you're not near where a bear is hibernating, you NEVER want to wake up a sleeping bear, or be around when one does get woken up.
That's a major problem with abandoned buildings where I am, kids like to explore them and bears like to sleep in them.
Waking up a hibernating bear will cause you to be severely attacked as well as more than likely causing the bear to die from waking up so early and being unable to find f
to gauge the thickness of the walls just take sticks ( if available ) that are as long as you want the walls to be thick and push them into the undug quinzhee. whilst digging the quinzhee out you will eventually reach the end of the sticks on the inside, thus enabling you to judge the thickness of the walls. do not forget to have the resting area raised above the entrance trench to enable the cold air to travel downwards and away from you. nice vid. peace.
Great video! One thing: finishing your shelter well before dark will make it easier to gauge the thickness of the walls as you dig: the light shows through. But I guess filming it made you finish late. Also, putting the doorway lower than the sleeping surface (or building a tunnel with a hump in it) will keep the bed area warmer. Very practical guide!
@TheWjl1234 actually you just need to pull some snow in to block it off for the night.. like big blocks of snow. Then you move them to go gather in the morning.
And where do you get hot drinks from in the middle of a snow drift??
I find it pointless that they're building a snow shelter to keep them out of the hazards that takes so long to build! U spend most of ur time waiting around for the snow to settle!! Why don't they just dig a hole and have sex for warmth......
Because in the middle of a snow drift this is all possible!! Let's let the snow settle for 20minutes.... but we'll be buried in 5!!!!
Avalanche coming down the hill!! Let's quickly buid a snow shelter to protect ourselves! What a great idea! now lets wait 20 minutes for the snow to settle before we build!! WTF!!! AVALANCHE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lucas, great video, however, here is some friendly advice;
a) an easier way to make sure the quinzhee remains at an even thickness, jam a couple dozen sticks, each 1 ft long into the quinzhee from the outside. These act as simle guides.
b) Do not pound the snowpile with your shovel. Natural solidifying happens in the same amount of time, so it is not strengthening the shelter. In fact, when you slap the snow with your shovel, you are driving out the insulative air. Keep the air in it.
These shelters are fun.. used to do it as a kid

You could have saved a lot of time and just laid on the ground and threw snow on yourself....

if you're making a snow dome, and then dig an entrance, how everything above the entrance doesn't come down?

@ShakedXsin it's one of those physics things. Think of an arch. It's hard to explain, but domes and arches are kinda self supporting, so to speak.

@Forsure3333 to see how deep the wall is
XDCherryXDBlossomXD 1 year ago
It was just a way to demonstrate that if you did puncture the side of the walls that it is easy to patch.

I don't get the point at 2:55. Why making that small hole and cover it up after?

Thank you for correctly calling it a quinzhee instead of an igloo.
