  • Love Townes, who I got into through Dax, and I dig the cover.

  • Freaking awesome!

  • dude is that drummer that same guy from my name is earl?

  • Long time Townes fan, just found this and love it. It needed to grow on me, but as the song went on I found myself liking it more and more. Well done

  • sorry.....but no....townes would have like it but compared to townes....no lol

  • jimi hendrix version of townes both would be proud

  • who is the drummer here? :)

  • @Face0fRoadkill1213 Its the amazing Andy McLeod

  • never heard of townes before I found dax covering him. Glad dax showed respect to one of favorite artists by spreading the word.

  • Anyone who is a Townes fan is an instant friend of mine! Keep the music alive!

    Thanks,

    Rolland B. Heiss

  • Dax is so badass it makes me wanna fart.

  • This kicks ASS!!!

  • this is so much better than the original

  • @jrodmademedoit

Not even close. I dont blame anyone for wanting to cover Townes, but nobody can hold a flame to him. Its great to pay tribute, but you will never touch that level.

  • @shelbyloveforever

Ha ha theres no question as musician this is by far better you may like the original better cause itsmore of your taste but musically this is put together way better and i dont care who you are you have to notice the major up grade in the voice singing on this version

  • @jrodmademedoit

No. Townes is simply better. I love everyting that Dax ever did but Townes is not of this world. No comparison.

  • if you don't like this cover, you must like balls in your mouth

  • Oh dear. What a travesty. Like to see the drummer playing Hendrix's 'Fire' though!

  • a cover doesn't mean you have to imitate the original artist.

  • song writers write song for people to sing .people who don't listen to townes music might get turned on to his music this way.

  • this is a horrid cover.

guys voice is cool... but they shit all over townes' great song.

  • i think they do a great job , which will attract more listners to Townes

  • I hate it when I click a great Townes Van Zandt song on youtube and it sends me to some CRAP cover like this.

  • Good drummer.

  • I love Townes Van Zandt, but this guy has a good pair of "Lungs", Great vocals..!!!!

I love the psychodelic edge in this cover as well:-)

  • i dig the vocals, man

  • exellent, great townes van zandt coversong!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    i loved townes

    roger

  • Excellent! Great performance to jam to!

  • Don't mean to be a troll here, but this is awful.

  • Agreed man. It's so cool to love Van Zandt but doing his music justice is not easy.

Steve Earle is one of the few who can do it.

  • NO worries... You're not the only one who thinks this version is really bad.

  • I really enjoyed this take on townes "lungs". Great Vocals especially. It's always interesting to see how other artists perform Townnes Van Zandt.

  • singing was good, guitar wasn't good. yes, i realize this was not the original arrangement. whoever made this arrangement, i assume dax himself, didn't work that hard. it is boring as hell.

  • Really? I thought it was a pretty interesting take on it. The only other versions I've heard are Townes's own and Steve Earle's awesome cover (which is not dissimilar from Townes's original).

  • just my opinion. my favorite version is the one on live at the old quarter. they tried something new ill give them credit for that, but i wasn't a fan of the guitar. the beauty of this song's music was how it was better than pretty much everything ever made and was a guy and a guitar. and of course the lyrics.

  • Definitely agree with you there. That's how I feel about the Allison Kraus/Robert Plant version of "Nothin'". Actually, it's beautiful, but to me, that song has to be just a fingerpicked guitar and vocals. And not Robert Plant's vocals. :S So that's probably how you feel about this song.

I dunno, I mean it's not like Dax or Rob/Al are trying to supplant Townes' versions.

Agreed, the Old Quarter version is awesome!!

  • I thought this was good... Dax Riggs has had an interesting career.

  • So i imagine all those comments that were removed were the negative ones. I like as many people as possible to be exposed to townes songs, though i think this band is not the best embassador. i'm also just confused and bitter about unorigional run of the mill bands like this getting huge gigs. (and removing negative comments about them from youtube)

  • unorigional? Do you know who this is you silly fuck? This is sir dax. You have no taste and obviously never heard when the kite string pops. Pathetic.

  • I like it! Has a lot of drama and feeling!

It shows that Townes could write some pretty good Rock & Roll too!!!

  • who is this asshole that butchered townes' song?

  • Oh my God, this is terrible. I need to wash my ears.

  • The thing that's great about this, though I don't even know who Dax is, is that I read that in Townes notes on this song, instead of "alegretto" or something, he wrote "this song should be screamed".

  • did you read that somewhere? very interesting by the way

  • Yeah, "this song should be screamed"!. Reading that made me love Townes twice as much. If Kurt Cobain had done a cover of this on Unplugged like he did the Leadbelly song, that whole generation would know and love Townes by now... and be far richer for it.

  • how true.

  • Dax is the man, he's the one who introduced me to Townes after one of his shows. Great cover too.

  • this is a great cover,,,quit your bitchin

  • Jesus he hacked up a good song, what a douche

  • I just didn't believe him. He didn't make the song speak to me like a song should speak to you.

  • this kinda sucks.

  • i love this cover. Both versions are beautifull.

  • I think this is really good. A GREAT cover, because its faithful to the original melodies and lyrics, but changes the style completely. Dax is doing a good job singing, and the guitarist is pretty great. The drummer is awesome, he has a lot of energy.

  • this is not a great cover, dax riggs is capable of better. he certainly has a right to cover it. of course the original was timeless

  • Very different than Townes, obviously but these guys were not trying to be Townes. Townes may have dug it-its very different but cool in a completely different way.

  • i wouldn't say "he doesn't have the right to play it" but i would say it's not a great cover. im not sure townes' music was ever meant for an electric guitar, let alone a full band setting, thats why a lot of studio recordings were so awful next to the live versions.

his drummer looks like that ethan guy...the fat actor who's a scientologist.

  • i really cant understand why everyone is hating on this. if you guys think dax has no right to play this song then you should know that Townes Van Zandt's son, is good friends with Dax, and he play's guitar on Dax's album.

i have been listening to towns van zandt since i was born. he is a fort worth legund and i grew up with his recordings. frankly your all being bitches :/

  • this sux, not a patch on townes

  • This version doesn't do Townes justice at all. Sorry to say so, but this just isn't good. For a good cover of this, check out Lyle Lovett's version on "step inside this house".

    This was close to awful.

  • This is the most under-rated song of all time but only because no-one has heard of Dax Riggs or ever heard his cover of Lungs.

  • absolute fucking horse shit god damn this sucks fuck you idiots

    shameful

  • reminded me of pearl jam too much sorry.

  • Dax is the best.

  • I thought you guys did a good job, but this is nothing close to Townes.

  • oh god what a disgrace.

  • Comment removed

  • Dax fuckin rules!

  • This is 60's drug music. Nice, now go fuck off hippies until I sober up

  • This song grows on you.I was not sure if I'd like it at first. The first few bars it sounded a little bit boring. Watched it 10 times and liked it better and better. He has a great voice, especially when the song developes. Great tribute to Townes, great grungy tribute. The original can't be beat, that's agreed and I can imagine why people don't like this version. But nonetheless decent version. I liked it. Is it available on a record.

  • Ecchh... way to ruin a great song.

  • Ha ha.. The drummer looks like Randy from "my name is earl". Cool version though. Townes Van Zandt's music needs to be played.

  • He said these guys were called "The Black Clowns" but I didn't ask him if he gave them that name or if that was their name. I thought they provided excellent support though. I'm gonna see D-R and his band of merry rebels next week, can't wait!

  • lol, dax randomly called them The Black Clowns..it's a lyric from "Dogheaded Whore"

  • One of the funniest things I've seen on youtube! Props!

  • *groan* I appreciate these kids doing this; but it's just painful to hear. This genre of music does not compliment the Godfather of Texas Folk's songs. Lungs is brickwall of a song, stopping everything we throw at it. It's better to leave it alone. But, kudo's for trying.

  • I totally agree. Yet I cannot help but find myself leaving a comment. This song may not do justice to the original and the way Townes meant for it to be heard. But, me, a fan of both Dax and Townes think this is totally amazing. It just brings the fans of Dax closer to Townes. See it as promoting. A homage to Townes. But I can totally see how fans of Townes cringe when hearing this. Dax does not have your every day country voice ;-).

  • You do realize not only are Dax and Townes Van Zandt in very good graces, TVZ make appearances on Dax's cd We sing of only blood or love...So I guess they dig it!

  • eh how did tvz make an appearence on We sing of only blood or love? Townes died in 97'. We sing came out in 2007.

  • it wasnt townes it was his son jt

  • ah, i see. I was not aware.

  • ok, sorry as fuck. JT Van Zandt. Goddamn.

  • Actually I quite like it.

  • and??? what's with all the "jocks" at lala????

    fuck college rock

  • I am a huge Townes van. A great song cannot be ruined. You guys prove that---- great cover!!!! pain keeps some of us alive!

I am going with my boots on!!--how about you???

  • shut the fuck up fag. no ones opinion is 'correct'. do you seriously cry like a little bitch over every band you hear and dont like? get a life

  • The title says Townes not Dix You tricked me into viewing this garbage.

  • Tricked? Ha! You're a gawdamned idiot for clicking. And I'm an idiot for replying to you.

  • he made it his own

  • I've never heard of this dude before, but I prefer the original. This isn't a bad version, and it's cool if someone hears this and then tracks down some proper TVZ stuff, but this hasn't got the intimacy that I like about the original. I even prefer the Cowboy Junkies version to this.

  • Okay. But I didn't track down any TVZ stuff after listening to this. I just assumed it wouldn't be as good as Dax's version. Just like Leonard Cohen's stuff...big disappointment there.

  • Dax has improved every song he's ever covered. I don't know what 'essence' you're talking about Big Chris, but you're dead wrong.

  • bigchris is defiantly talking smack to the wrong artist fans. dax fans are crazy. we will kill.

  • Well, I don't mean him any harm, personally....I just hope that his taste in music improves with time.

  • i dont mind people covering songs but he didnt capture any essence of that song. no clue whatsoever. i dont blame him for picking that song its a great song- the cover sucked though-

  • i disagree the cover doesnt suck smallchris. in fact im not sure anyone covers someone's song as good as the original. townes was great but dax's voice is a bit better and on top of that townes' son jt played on dax's new album we sing of only blood or love and if townes' son likes dax then it really doesnt matter what your dumbass thinks.

  • enough said.

  • I am right. My opinion is correct. And you have horrible taste. I bet you heard this version first. I bet you like this bad imitation of pearl jam's whole catalog. Im glad i heard his name so I will never make the mistake of listening to him again. He should cover black hole sun instead. Grunge is dead losers. It would suck to hang out with yall.

  • fuck you this has nuthing to do with pearl jam or grunge for that matter. Dax Riggs is one of the best vocalistst ive ever heard.

  • reali?

  • this really doesn't show the extent of his voice.. just look up dax riggs im sure your enjoy him

  • ok kool will do

  • 'Great what you did with a Townes song

    5 stars

  • Townes' version is better, but this is great

  • I totally agree with Lukeor.

  • How does this guy turn every cover he does into the best music I never heard. I go back and listen to these originals and they all pale on comparison.

  • That's Andy Macleod! It's impossible to show too much of Andy; he's like a 6-year-old playing whack-a-mole.

  • wonderful.

they showed way too much of the druummer though..

    who is that?

    got anymore from Lolla?

  • someone told me who he was at the friday show but i cant remember..got the whole set from lola, no other bands tho
