Nonsense! He was in favor of drilling on land and opposed to drilling offshore. He hasn't changed his positions at all. All he has said is that he would be willing to accept drilling off shore as part of a greater energy bill if that is what is needed to get it passed.
In the senate you need 60 votes and the republicans won't vote for anything but off shore drilling. He may have to take the bad with the good.
McCain's center piece for energy independence: more oil even though we have 3% of the world's proven reserves. We have basically paid for Iraq's reconstruction and now because of their oil profits they have a budget surplus. We are just giving money away to the Middle East, while we see huge budget deficits and high inflation and unemployment. By the way oil companies made the largest profits in history. I am tired of being fleeced by the government and oil companies. Time for change.
"... 90 billion barrels of oil sit beneath the ocean bed [...] off the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf coasts. Presidential bans and congressional prohibitions have put the tracts off-limits to oil company exploration at least until 2012"
Sorry.. that 90B bbl number includes areas currently leased and being pumped. The off-limits area has an estimated 18B bbl.
A US Geological survey puts the Bakken figure at more like 3.7B bbl technically recoverable. Who knows... in 300 years, maybe.
You can't seriously believe that the benefits of tire pressure maintenance trump the benefits of drilling for American oil so that the U.S. can achieve greater energy independence.
Which one will save you money now? Answer: Inflating your tires. Drilling won't have an impact for 7 years. Even NASCAR says that you should inflate your tires. Bet you haven't read his energy plan. We only have 3% of the world's oil and once its gone--what will we do then? Answer me that.
I think most intelligent Americans know to keep their tires inflated properly and to wear a sweater when it's chilly out. Obama's suggestion is all air (no pun intended) -- not a solution to energy independence.
Americans may know how to keep the right tire pressure but every time a survey is done on the subject it has proven that they are bad at actually doing it.
Yeah b/c Obama's clearly thinking rationally when he sets the goal for having 1 million plug-in hybrid vehicles on the road by 2015. Yup, no tricks or tree hugging appeasing gimmicks there.
What is this Excelon crap you lame right-wing trolls keep bringing up? Just like the other made up nonsense I've been seeing this floating around since January. I haven't found one single shred of proof to back it up.
You're using the right-wing's one and only tactic of name-calling 'cause your candidates a bumbling oaf who doesn't have any thing to offer in terms of ideas or competence.
The New York Times did an article on Obama's ties to Excelon early last year. Obama received substantial campaign contributions from executives at Excelon engergy. He then allowed Excelon to gut and ultimately scrap his proposed legislation that would have required enhanced reporting of nuclear leaks. Obama then told voters in Iowa that he passed the legislation, which was false. Read the NYT piece. I am not a right-winger. I have voted Dem for over 20 years, but I think Obama is a fraud.

It is even worse than you think. Pumping that oil is playing the last trump.

Obama tells people to use common sense and watch what they do, and this will save the environment.
McCain wants to tear up shorelines and mock Obama with toys.

Obama sold out to Excelon energy company years ago--taking their money and delivering on their agenda. Don't buy his change hype. Obama is a fraud.

I agree. Obama should just publish Mc Cains voting record in the next ads. This will show the American people that Mc Shame was never ready to lead.
