I would go for a high powered rifle Demcad! For close quarters protection a 12 gauge would trump a pistol any day. I once owned a 300 win mag Browning semi. That sucker is deadly at long range with a scope. I took out a 1000Lb Moose with a single shot to the back of the neck. It was dead before it hit the ground. Rifles of that caliber are good for long distances and a blast to shoot at the range.

I would get a used Ruger Security 6 .357 mag revolver. it is very strong and can be used for self defense or hunting game. The 4" or 6" bbl would be best. You can use .38 special ammo (low recoil to learn to shoot it and move up to .357) Revolvers are easier to learn to use than the autos.

BTW, I think that you should get yourself a .45 cal handgun. I have a double action .45 cal semiautomatic pistol. Yea that would be good..although I personally do not like glocks. They feel cheap and are more prone to jamming for some reason. See if you have a pawn shop where you live and check out some .40 cal S&W. Make sure the grip feels good in your hand and it feels comfortable.
