there is no wiring to do on the swap I did, just the +12V to the injection pump solenoid because I run mechanical pump, not electronics. The early 1Z,AFN engines have about 6 wires to do,not a big deal either, plenty of resources on forums all over the world :-)
>>>>>>>if you want to do like me you can source a custom mechanical pump online in the USA or in France we have a good competent guy doing it as well and way cheaper.
Do some resaerch before starting the project,it can be done in 3 days working cool.
Don't forget the input shaft needle bearing in the crank shaft ;-)
it's very easy if you have a minimum of skills.you will need some vanagon turbo diesel parts to make your life easier, otherwise you'll have to make some modifications for intake, exhaust and left engine mount.the easier is to source the TD parts,it's more plug and play this way.if you want to keep the electronics,we have good threads on the french forum t3zone.com,way more organised and understandable than thesamba.com or vwdiesel.net.
Hi, I have a t3 caravelle, (crew cab) at the moment there`s a 1.6 diesel from a passat in it. It works fine but is really underpowered. I would like to change it for an audi 1,9 tdi which I have. Is this job complicated, any other advise???
Thanks in advance...(I tried both languages cos I heard you speaking French in the video...cheers)
Hi, what is the exsact engine code for this? Did they ever put this engine into a T4 van? The only reason I ask is becuase it sounds exsactly the same. And no other T4 diesel sounds like the one we have.
For less expensive timing belt kits, put on the cylinder head the bolt for rolling tensioner bearing from the JX or AAZ ,like this you buy the AAZ timing kit,way cheaper and the same.
Keep the top TDI tensioner bearing, the one on the back of the belt, you can see it on my video (AAZ cut belt cover,sorry....)
I'm using the JX manifold to have something more simple for the exhaust.
You do have to modify the left engine bracket if using exhaust manifold from golf and partially the exhaust pipe:bummer and not necessary if not doing a van for racing....
ou can use the JX KKK K14 turbo or another K14 from a golf 2 and turning around the "snail" of the turbo compressed air and also the exhaust flat part going onto the manifold.
I will find a IZ or equivalent, and attempt a pump conversion. Limited budget so breakers yard will be main supplier. You have given me inspiration, re-ignited the fire......Respect. Keep having fun, wish I was a lot younger, I'd join your crew. Regards
Cooked by abuse. Youngest grandson not well, regular 2/300 mile trips to hospital. Old girl past taking a beating. Original 1.6 headgasket went, opened to find cracks between valves. Bought good AAZ from breakers. More abuse, blown turbo, and headgasket failed. Opened up to find previously dropped a valve or snapped cambelt, much head and piston damage. They do have a poor cooling system but I never encountered excessive heat, in fact had to run it in garage to check fan was working.
Hi Alikanake. Appreciate your replies. Hawaii looks amazing, watched your other videos, great fun. You've got style, brains and adrenalin, one life - live it.
I watched "vw t3 1.9tdi arrancando" by westfyjoker and decided not to go there, but now you have convinced me. The hybrid pump might be a bit outside my skill but worth a try. Plenty of ECU engines available, but I'm against all that wiring. Like to keep things simple and stock if possible. Did you use a JX manifold, turbo and exhaust?
An oil by pass cooler from Audi 80 with Golf1 GTI radiator, mixed with the vanagon oil/coolant heat exchanger;it`s very hot in the south of France in the summer, this is perfect for it when driving fast in mountains!!!
My pump is neither an AAZ nor JX,it`s a home made one, based on a VE bosch type.Actually the body of the pump is from a Golf 2,camplate and pressure regulator from TDI pump and also the 4 outlet fittings+the timing piston system inside
11mm hydraulic head and some other parts from a Fiat pump
the LDA is from a golf2 RA intercooled turbo machined like the Oettinger one,but not necessary.
I` now living in Hawaii but still have this one in France.
No reliability problems in this conversion if you know to do a good job,I`ve made some little mistakes at the beginning on making the injection pump, got some broken parts then big leaks of diesel gas.
The main purpose of hat is to be freaking reliable:no more sucking electronic.
It`s a 1Z but you should know that the AFN is exactly the same engine, just the accessories are different.
Hi alikanake, conversion looks and sounds great. Is it an IZ or AFN engine? Which pump did you use? AAZ or JX or other? Has it proved reliable? Recently cooked my engine and looking to replace but without ECU etc. Regards.

Stupid Youtube!!!!
Something wrong when trying publishing a link, a part of it or even while spelling the website adress:5 times redoing the text!!!
Keep the coolant sender on the end of the camshaft for the dashboard instrument.
You can buy a tdiM pump :search for it online at .......tdi-engine......net or tdi m pump
That's an easy swap, let me know how it is going on ;-)
Sunny goodbye from Hawai'i

Hi!!
It`s a 1Z,same block as AFN or SDi engine AEY.
Home made injection pump, different settings will make it sounds less noisy...
Bye!

Avoid Audi TDI engines because you'll have to do your own right bracket:the holes are not in the same spot on the engine bock.
You'll need an Audi 80 or equivalent coolant plastic fitting between the injectors.(without the little pipe connecting the expansion tank).
You won't need the glow plug coolant sender on this fitting because no more need of preheat ,unless you live in Alaska...
Buy a plug from VW for removing the sender you don't need if you want it clean.

The cracks between the valves is almost a factory style thing,it always happen,no matter what you do.
VW manuals say that until 1mm wide, the crack is ok,just have to close it taping with a "pointy?" tool and a hammer.
I did it,thta's ok.
Pistons that have encountered valves are sometimes still good to reuse,it happen to me too.
I have eurovan 150HP nozzles in my injectors.
TDI are better for the assembly between crakshaft and timing belt pinion .

There is a guy in the USA selling mechanical injection pumps for a price that is very fair,on exchange basis.
How did you cooked your engine??bad coolant system?
I get on mine a golf3 VR6 aquastat, same on the vanagons that have AC.
watercooled turbo from Golf2 RA and a KTM radiator for it.
I get also a turbo intercooler: very necessary!!!

Wow, very cool and inspired me to get on it to do a TDI 1Z conversion in my Vanagon.
Can you give me some pointers on how to do the wiring harness for my 87 2 wheel drive Vanagon???
It would be greatly appreciated and the headache to overcome (I'm guessing for most guys).
All the best

the 5 cylinder swap originally exists on VW South Africa T3 ,gas engines, but it's the same block....you can find mounting kits in Germany

would a would the VW LT2.4 TD engine fit in a T3?
