A very Happy New Year to you Doug and a million thanks for all the vocal treats you have given us over the past years. What better way to hear the traditional Scottish song sung by the glorious voice of Dame Nellie. One of my happiest memories remains lunch at Coombe Cottage with Lady Vestey (Melba's grand-daughter). She served Peche Melba for dessert. The house was exactly as it had been in Melba's lifetime and the diva's bedroom was one of the prettiest I have ever seen. Happy days! Vivian
Thanks, Doug, for sending me this little ditty again. Needless to say, Melba is as incomparable as ever. A Happy and Healthy New Year to you and your family!
Melba's granddaughter, Lady Vestey, who died recently, occupied and preserved Melba's country house not far from Melbourne where I live. Thanks, Doug, for preserving and sharing this 1905 recording. - John Austin, Australia
I had a friend who played the entire Goldberg Variations every New Year's Eve-but for the rest of us Auld Lang Syne will have to do-which is not so bad if you have Melba to sing it
Thanks for the many videos you've posted, and best wishes for the new year.
I'm not sure how far back the association of Auld Lang Syne with New Year's goes. It's a natural for that role with it's remembrance of old friends, old times, and lost contacts, but I think in the 19th century (and before) it may have been thought of as a more general sentimental song rather than a holiday standard. Not sure though...
Melba sings with that warm, old-school sound that is rarely heard with today's artists. A wonderfully sentimental song-- slightly nostalgic about times past, but looking forward to the happenings (good and bad) yet to come. Lovely. Wishing all my best to you and yours in 2011, Doug. :)
Most appropriate in view of the time zones that you chose the great Aussie soprano to sing the traditional song of the baton of time being transferred by the almost spent year to the new.
Doug, thank you for a wonderful year of sharing and appreciations of great music and singing and wishing you all happiness, joy and prosperity for the New Year.
Doug, I wish you and yours all the best, particularly good health! Thanks for sharing the videos of these great singers and the informative comments about them.
Why not give poor Nellie another try? BTW... I've said it before, I'll say it again: one really wouldn't want to get on this gal's bad side! Question: Do you believe in ghosts? Cheers & All Best for a Happy New Year! Doug --
It's in Harold Schonberg's book, The Great Musicians (formerly, The Glorious Ones), in the chapter on Joan Sutherland. I don't have the text available but I think Victor Gollancz, the publisher, quotes the (perhaps anonymous) critic. Since this may be a third-hand source, it's hard to track down the veracity of the statement.
1905! It's taken a hundred and almost four years for Dame Nellie's New Year's greetings to reach me. Whether it is the fault of Australia Post or due to some other cause, who can say? However, it is after all the Season of Goodwill and so I wish the dear lady a Happy New Year, and I look forward to her new recordings as they become available. As a matter of passing interest, I think that her backing group here might have included the fine Aussie baritone Peter Dawson who relished teasing Melba.
Splendid graphics! It was interesting to note this recording was made on Sept. 4th, my birthday....but not exactly the same year! Thanks for this posting.
Hi Doug...thank you so much for this one...I enjoyed this very, very much...it's very touching...5***** and a favorite for sure...thanks for sending! John :)
Once you get beyond the very regal Dame Nellie, this is really quite an affecting version of the olde tune!! I think I would have this at my funeral, but not for a good many years!! The Olde Scottish Ayre as sung by Lady Bracknell!! Thanks Doug. A perfect way to end a less than perfect decade!!
Happy New Year to you, Doug!
Thank you so much for this precious gift for the start of 2012. How wonderful!
Wishing you a joyful year.
All the best

PS: For well over a century listeners have made note of her voice's "otherwordly" quality.... so by all means do take care! In good humour. Doug --

You're not alone in thinking so. Referring to Sutherland's debut at The Met, a critic reportedly stated, "She's as dull as Melba."
meltzerboy 2 years ago
Hmmmm..... really ?! do you recall who the critic was? and did he later change his thinking?

How she could turn something as simple as this little old tune into something that moves one's soul is simply amazing.

Time vanishes in your enthralling videos
because you present great artists such
as Melba with a freshness and immediacy that allows them to live very
much in the present! The animated
photo montage was mesmerizing with
a number of stunning images of the
Grande Dame! Tender singing with
a lovely dusting of patina! Thank you
Doug!
