@steveOo0o It is called a french foreign legion because pretty much the french didn't want immigrants to move to france or join the french army so they created the foreign legion. They get a lot of recruits because of ex french colonial territory and before they disbanded their colonies the french foreign legion would protect these colonial territories for example vietnam before the americans got involved although the same as their latter counterpart it didn't go well.

Or course not. As a fully French citizen, I could enlist in the Foreign Legion, if I pass the physical and psychological tests. But I'll be given another nationality : Belgian, Luxemburgese, Swiss, Monegasque or Canadian. If I'm white, that is. If I'm black, then I'll be probably given the Senegalese, Congolese, etc. nationality.

But in case you're white and French and joined the Legion, you're nicknamed "Gaul" : you're officially not French, but the guys know you are.

If one gets in or not is dependent on who else is trying to get in at that time. Since WW1 alot of prior service military try to get in. After ww2 it was Germans. After 1956 alot of Hungarians. In the 80s it was British and in the 90s Eastern Europeans. If you really want a good look read "Life in the French Foreign Legion" by Evan McGorman. He is Canadian. He found it to be disappointing, although he did not regret it.
