  • So what makes this different from General Tso's Chicken? It seems that the same ingredients were used in both sauces, but I've known Tso's to have more spice to it. What do you add to give it that kick?

  • This has to be one of the best looking recipes I've seen! I tried one a while ago (I think it was supposed to be gourmet sesame chicken? I dunno but it sucked) that called for two CUPS of sugar for the sauce, and there was no batter. Was terrible. This looks and tastes amazing :)

  • Cooked this tonight....the batter/plain chicken is perfect and just like a chinese resturant. As for the sauce, it was terrible. I think you HAVE to have asian market brand spices etc for this, because the hoisin basically ruined the entire sauce I think. Do yourself a favor and go the extra mile to get the right ASIAN ingredients, dont buy the stuff from your local grocery store.(Dynasty brand Hoisin & sesame sauce = bad)

  • I made this tonight for my wife. I modified the recipe to use powdered ginger in the sauce and fresh garlic in place of the fresh ginger. My wife my blown away, she thought it was take out except for the fact that it was too late for the local Chinese place to be open. This is a great recipe.

  • The sauce in this is nothing like the sweet sesame sauce you get in most restaurants. Use a different sauce. The batter in this one is great, just make sure you don't overload the fryer with too many pieces at a time.

    I've ordered both and they seemed the same, except for one has sesame seeds. Chances are if you're ordering from a regular chinese takeout restaurant, you won't notice much of a difference.

  • @Lpedraja2002 no, with toasted oil, sesame seeds (white or golden) are put thru a toasting process to get color and the nut like flavor.

  • ok, I just made this - was a bit leery of the batter. I've tried so many basic flower types, tempura from various boxes. This stuff turned out JUST like take-out style. Flipping awesome.

    The Sesame sauce...better than I've had from any restaurant. Unbelieveable. (But then again, I'm not in an area known for epic Asian food...regardless, it was way better).

    If your questioning. I suggest: Make this. Make it now... xD

    Next on my list is his General Tso recipe.

  • Kai, another great tasting recipe, we all loved it, made this last night for dinner. One question, how do you keep the chicken from getting soggy, we like it a little more on the firmer side. By the way the batter makes an OUtSTANDING frying batter. ninanee2008; I've tried several of Kai's recipes and they all came out great!!! Kung Poa Chicken, Beef Lo Mein, and of course this one.

  • I made this tonight and it was very authentic dish but lacked flavor. I'm not sure if it's because my brand of hoisin sace or lack of salt. I used a half tbsp of hoisin for extra gravy.  It lacked flavor in comparison to Asiancookingmadeeasy's recipe. I did like that Itkman had the chicken batter all in one bowl rather than separated which makes it more easier and cleaner. Easy to follow recipe. 3/5 STARS ***

  • @irbenson it is... but in some places Sesame chicken is not spicy and GT chicken is... that makes the difference... Sesame chicken is more sweeter... but some places, its like what u always thought which is gt chicken + sesame seeds

  • I made this last night and its not like the sesame chicken I order at chinese restaurants...the one im looking for is sweet, this was not sweet at all! i've tried itkmans other recipes like beef and broccoli and the shrimp fried rice and those were amaaaaaazing!!!!! I just didn't like the sesame chicken recipe!

  • @girlegrl54 well the recipe suggests dark soy, hoisin, sesame oil, and chicken broth. that means sodium, aka salty. it also suggests sugar, aka sweet. try adding more sugar and less salty stuff. maybe even try some honey...trial and error and modify your recipe :P im deep frying the sesame chicken right now xD
