So what makes this different from General Tso's Chicken? It seems that the same ingredients were used in both sauces, but I've known Tso's to have more spice to it. What do you add to give it that kick?

I think you HAVE to have asian market brand spices etc for this, because the hoisin basically ruined the entire sauce I think. Do yourself a favor and go the extra mile to get the right ASIAN ingredients, dont buy the stuff from your local grocery store.(Dynasty brand Hoisin & sesame sauce = bad)
I made this tonight for my wife. I modified the recipe to use powdered ginger in the sauce and fresh garlic in place of the fresh ginger. My wife my blown away, she thought it was take out except for the fact that it was too late for the local Chinese place to be open. This is a great recipe.

The sauce in this is nothing like the sweet sesame sauce you get in most restaurants. Use a different sauce. The batter in this one is great, just make sure you don't overload the fryer with too many pieces at a time.
I've ordered both and they seemed the same, except for one has sesame seeds. Chances are if you're ordering from a regular chinese takeout restaurant, you won't notice much of a difference.

I made this tonight and it was very authentic dish but lacked flavor. I'm not sure if it's because my brand of hoisin sace or lack of salt. I used a half tbsp of hoisin for extra gravy. It lacked flavor in comparison to Asiancookingmadeeasy's recipe. I did like that Itkman had the chicken batter all in one bowl rather than separated which makes it more easier and cleaner. @irbenson it is... but in some places Sesame chicken is not spicy and GT chicken is... that makes the difference... Sesame chicken is more sweeter... but some places, its like what u always thought which is gt chicken + sesame seeds

@girlegrl54 well the recipe suggests dark soy, hoisin, sesame oil, and chicken broth. that means sodium, aka salty. it also suggests sugar, aka sweet. try adding more sugar and less salty stuff. maybe even try some honey...trial and error and modify your recipe :P im deep frying the sesame chicken right now xD
