I hate how the guy in the beginning refers to them as dog food, that's so rude and discouraging. I hate how some athletic people think they are superior than someone's who's not.
@brownkv081 First of all, not all fat people are lazy. There are many aspects that make up a human being and one can be productive and skilled in so many ways apart from athletics. Being an athlete does not decree that the person is better than someone who's fat, out of shape or weak physically. That's ridiculous, shallow and ignorant.
@CrimsonOkami So they can be skilled, and productive and be a huge burden on the medical system because their fat little useless bodys cant even take care of them selves and start getting diabetes, and heart problems and become huge disgusting eye sores on a good looking neighborhood.
@brownkv081 I don't think you really understood what I said. I wasn't talking about the morbidly obese who need to lose weight in order to live. One can be 'fat' or fatter than someone who's considered thin and be perfectly healthy. Just as a very thin person can be unhealthy if all they eat is junk food. But all of that is besides my point anyway. I was just saying that there's more to life and a person than muscle mass and endurance.
Most of these people did not do enough training. In many cases this was not really their fault though. Because the marathon distance is at / beyond the human ability to store glycogen and tolerate tissue microdamage, it is far more than twice as challenging as a half marathon (for example.) To really prepare for it, you need well over a year of consistent running followed by 16+ weeks of dedicated marathon training including more than one 20 mile+ run. The injuries depicted occur otherwise.
What I find interesting is that it does not seem there was any attention put into training them how to run properly, and yes there is a proper way to run. As I see all the injuries start to arise, I am saddened to see more people not getting to run due to a lack of training.
@mrviolentlyhappy- it is not too late. a friend of mine has lost 65 pounds in the past 6 months and just finished a 5k in 37 minutes, and ran for 1 hour without stopping a week after that. His goal is a marathon, and he is working up slowly to that distance. He started with walking, and transitioned into a natural running style (pose, chi, newton natural running, etc) and that is helping him to run without injury. I believe you can...go for it.
I don't know why the general public keeps making such a big deal out of the marathon. I am a marathon runner and it's something that you learn to do through time and with the appropriate training. Taking 13 sedentary people and making them prepare for a marathon in just 9 months is just dumb. It reinforces the stereotype that the marathon is something extraordinary to achieve, when in fact it's not.
I started training for running a marathon after watching this episode of Nova. I am now running my 4th marathon this year and plan to qualify for the Boston marathon soon.
you normally have to qualify, but of the 20000 plus entries, 5000 or right around that number are automatically reservered for people who run for causes. Then there are some who are allowed to run it if they are close to someone on the committee or part of the race. Me, personally, qualification time feels more achieved.
Nobody seems to get the real reason for this challenge. To see if 13 sedentary people could lose weight and change their energy level. At 38:00 the experts admit - no one lost weight. It's not the exercise that makes people skinnier, it's the mouth. 1200 calories is not much. An apple is 75. America has too many food sources and our economony is based on service industry - food.
@freecord i don't know if the poor diet is the only cause of not losing weigt. i think the lack of a weight training program also caused this... people don't gain much muscle mass from running at this slow pace. they need to start a weight program asap (and add the running in later, even better start a sprint routine later on).
YOU ALL SUCK! HM? AIN'T LIFE BORING WITH NOTHING NEW AND CHALLENGING. WELL, THE CHALLENGE IS TOO MAKE ME RICH WITHIN A FEW YEARS. IF YOU CANNOT DO IT, THEN YOU NEED TO STEP DOWN. AND QUIT ACTING LIKE LIFE IS BORING. IF LIFE IS BORING, THEN YOU ARE JUST DUMB! PERIOD! DISTURBING PEOPLE, KILLING PEOPLE, ETC... ALL TOO EASY. EVEN A KID CAN RUN SOMEBODY OVER ACCIDENTALLY WITH A CAR. SO, MAKE SURE YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH MY CHALLENGE BEFORE ACTING GODLY AND SMART.
While this is an amazing idea that deserves full support, the success would have been close to or possibly straight up 100% had they done this with cycling, and they would have been able to run up to 100 miles if they think that 26 on a bike is too easy.
The impact on their health, and their long-term ability to maintain it within their lifestyle indefinitely would have also been so much higher.
The only pitfall is that it would be perhaps harder for lower income viewers to follow, but
@chris2002Rocklin The only pitfall is that it would be perhaps harder for lower income viewers to follow a cycling variant than this running event, but I actually beleive that a cycling event would inspire more people because it would also be more accessable due to the lower risk of injuries riding a bike even several hundred miles as compared to running a marathon.
Fact: the body can only adapt to running in limited ways but cycling is acheivable for nearly 100% of average healthy adults.
@chris2002Rocklin while this is true, We wouldnt have running imjuries if everyone ran barefoot. Shoes cause modern running injuries. you can get injuries from BF running but only if you take it to fast, and push your body past its limit before its ready
