I noticed that all flights taking off from newark do a left turn and then a right turn, soon after taking off, wonder why?

Ryan 198416. If its any comfort. I flew into Newark from London on 4th October with Continental. Flight was 45 mins late on arrival. I had 30 minutes to make a connecting flight to Boston. It just so happened that Continental held the Boston flight for a further 30 mins, so on this occasion I made the flight.

Im flying through Newark in 3 weeks on my way to Shannon Ireland. Anyone know if Continental will hold a flight if passengers on a connecting flight are late? I have 50 minutes to connect in Newark and it's making me a little nervous.
