by raw milk, I'm pretty sure they mean unpasteurized milk, which can be pretty dangerous. As far as I know, milk can't even be sold unless it's been pasteurized. It can have really bad stuff in it!
@kittercat Bad stuff can be in "Dead" milk, too . And your point is? Why is it illegal in the first place? If taken care of then this raw milk is actually more healthy for you. As any one who has taken antibiotics for any expended period of time knows that you NEED bacteria or else you start feeling real badly. Basically it comes down to control.
You have to look at the big picture. Sure you should be able to eat what you want, but should you also be allowed to spread any disease that you want? No health insurance for raw milk drinkers sounds fair enough. Why should I pay for your stupid choices?
@sajfen What stupid choices are you talking about? People doing Cocaine out of a hooker's snatch? I don't many raw milk drinkers are doing that. Are you talking about people who buy a little milk with their drugs and it has been sitting in the hot weather? Or are you talking about people who buy milk from cows that have their tails cut off and are unhealthy? No that is mostly in the "dead" milk farms. hmmmmmm..

@TheLateAndrewRyan Raw milk differs from grocery milk primarily by the lack of pasteurization. Pasteurization is a Good Thing if you want your milk to last more than a day or two without risk of getting sick.
I drank raw goat milk as a kid on the babysitter's farm. Does a body good. :-)
@jawayetti I grew up on a farm where the only milk we had was goat. "maa maa"! 11 people there and nobody ever got a broken bone, despite many accidents.
@3martijns What pasteurization does is break down the fat in the milk, and those smaller fat globules cause heart disease. People in the know want raw milk.
My family grew up on the raw milk we milked from our own cows. There is nothing wrong with raw milk, other than it tastes better than the pasturized stuff.
I don't understand the point of nanny of the month. If this were an anarchist channel it might make some sense, but the idea that some people can tell what to do, even in your own home is what government is. If you don't like strangers telling you what to do in situations that don't affect anyone else I would suggest you stop supporting government entirely.
People didn't start pasteurizing milk for shits & giggles. Lets legalize serving raw pork chops slathered in aged luke warm potato salad while were at it. Nanny of the month fail.
My point was with all the other WAY more invasive laws always being proposed, I could give a shit about someone who wants to make moving raw milk across state lines illegal. It gets really silly when they show the guy preaching about the "right to eat the natural foods of the earth" in refference to how we prepare milk pumped from thousand pound animals in comercial mass quantities. I stand by what I said, nanny of the month fail.
Sorry, can't agree to this one... Before Pasteurization was mandated, raw milk was responsible for approximately 25% of ALL cases of food-borne illness/death. It's a legitimate public health concern.
@sca719, Go right ahead as that'd still be perfectly legal under the law. The law concerns certain commercial sales of raw milk. Go suck all the cows you want! As for all the "I drink raw milk and haven't gotten sick" comments, well my wife's grandfather chain-smoked his entire live and never developed cancer too. The first rule of Junk Science - Anecdotes aren't data!
@Gizmologist2 Nobody is saying that we have to do away with pasteurized milk and replace it with raw milk. What the issue here is that if an individual wants to purchase raw milk, because they prefer it over pasteurized milk, then they should have that right. Why should the government ban it? Why should the government be in charge of what you decide to consume, since what you decide to consume only affects you.
@msst33, The problem with your argument is that is assumes that the consumer is making the purchase while being knowledgeable of the risks. A shopper browsing the dairy case at the local supermarket may not be aware that one of the sets of milk products may carry a significant health risk for them and their family.
@Gizmologist2 So what you're suggesting is that because there are uninformed people out there, or people who might not pay attention to the risks or might make an uneducated choice, then it's best that the government treat everybody as if we're all too stupid to make good choices. So the answer is for the government to ban the product outright. So in other words, you support the idea of a Nanny state. Because it's the government's job to make decisions for us because the people are incompetent.
@msst33, first of all you're mis-characterizing the federal law in question. It doesn't ban the sale of raw milk, it prohibits interstate distribution. However, 26 states have long standing outright bans on the sale of raw milk and others restrict its sales to at least some degree, so this isn't a new issue and you have a long line of entities to pick a bone with. As for your "incompetence" stance, I guess we sound also un-ban lead-based paint because people should have a choice there too!
A couple years ago, my parents and I went up to Maine for vacation. We visited an old mill that still made cornmeal. You could buy some, but you couldn't eat it. My dad asked why, and the man who worked there said it was because of the FDA, and there might be bits of stone in the cornmeal.
Then my dad said, "Well, we ate it for three hundred years and nothing bad happened."
No joke, I drank raw milk for the first time yesterday. How ironic that there should be a segment on it today.
But, you guys, I gotta say, after having drank the milk, I experienced heavy vertigo and today I woke up with a dried puddle of blood on my pillow and some strange impulse to vote liberal. It's really a dangerous substance.
Government is worst than the Mafia. After all when a wiseguy is imposing himself on you he does'nt claim to be doing it for your own good. He's not breaking those legs because he wants to improve your life.

@samuils Probably to push state monopolies on industry. Canada has a quota system for dairy products that controls supply and makes it difficult to transport product across provincial lines (and makes this product 50% more expensive than the same item across the border in the U.S.). Same goes for eggs, beef, etc., But guess what, when there is a shortage caused by the quota, they buy from from the States.

"We have a right to..." - is a fallacy perpetrated by the progressives.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" - US Constitution.
The Constitution puts forth the limits of the power of Congress, it does not grant rights.
i.e. It is "Congress does not have the authority to ...", not "We have a right to ..."
Congress does not have the express authority to stop the sale, distribution, or consumption of raw milk.
