Actually, wasn't IBMs first GUI for the PC, OS/2 "Presentation Manager", which was released in November 1988. Not a surprise that MS beat OS/2, since MS wrote OS/2 for IBM. (That was IBM's stupidest move ever)
I was listing competitors to Windows 2, as that is what this video is about. I don't think we can consider Win 1 a GUI tho. :-) And I realized after I posted your point was you thought IBM had good marketing. I think it's understandable why I missed that. :-)
Technically it is. But realistically? :-) Compared to what Mac, Amiga, and even the ST had graphically at the same time. Win1 was a tiled app display screen. :-) IMHO
Now, I actually used a very early version of GEM on a PC that was a full GUI, but it didn't get any market share. Too bad.
More like momentum. If your boss likes his IBM typewriter, as soon as he hears about that ibm computer he'll buy it right away. That way the underlings will stop asking for a computer, and he doesn't have to do any thinking.
It's now 2010, and the only hardware platform still in existance is also the worst one. Fucking Management.
@richardmaudsley77 This is exactly why I hate explaining to people that windows isn't the most popular because it was ever the best. It was always the worst!
There were 2 versions of this either Windows 286 or Windows 386 which could be obtained either on micro disk or floppy.I have both in their original boxes.
Of those I'd say the 4000-color and CD-quality-sound Amiga was best, the MacOS second best, and GEOS third best (a C=64 only cost $100 at that point). I wouldn't touch the other systems.
im Glad Apple Tried to Sue Microsoft they pretty much stole their design i do admit though the recent microsoft design is pretty kewl but its SLOW haha and easily gets viruses otherwise microsoft could actually do something useful i have PC's but i LOVE MACS because of their Performance and Security =) oh and Still glad Apple tried to sue microsofts sorry ass lol (sorry bout the language just had to say that haha)
Actually if its a real mac and you install Vista in Boot Camp it can be a pretty powerful gaming computer lol because in boot camp it has full support and all the ram and power and Aero and stuff so its not like a virtual machine but i don't hate vista its just that you have to have a really good PC config to run it without problems or at least hardware and speed problems pretty much it all depends on ur configuration
wake up and smell the coffee. its because the hardware and software work brillant togehter on a mac. no issues cos apple make both. lets see how fast it is on a pc hahahahaha the leapard shit
yep, ive already smelt the coffee! :-) naaaa Leopard would still run good on a Hackintosh coz OS X itself is faster than windows. the other thing is coz Mac OS X doesnt need anti virus that AUTOMATICALLY makes OS X faster than windows.
considern im using Vista with no antivirus software.yet to get a virus. dont even use that as a excuse, cos its funny there is viruses floatin about for macs stop talkn shit lol
well, my Mac hasnt had the grey screen of death.. NOT ONCE! and the last i heard there r viruses for mac but theyre the one's that you'd get only if u goto a porn site or sumthin.....
NO, ur wrong! with windows, all u have to be is "unprotected" and u get crap.. i tried this once by turning off the protection on my brother's machine n in almost no time at all crap started happening.. with windows, viruses r just waiting 4 unprotected machines n the 2nd they c 1, they pounce..!
hey man, this is what 1 of my bro's friends did once, he thought his windows pC was invincible to the 114,000 viruses that r out there n eventually his comp started slowing down till it was barely usable!! now, ask urself this question, if u reli think u dont need protection, WHY THE HELL DO THEY MAKE PROTECTION THEN? do u think people just like using it coz its a fun thing 2 do? no, setting up protection is BORING and maintaining it is BORING!!!
I wasn't saying that. I said that PCs won't get viruses if you stay off of porn sites, simple as that. If you use a PC irresponsibly, then you will get viruses. If you use it responsibly, and stay off of suspicious sites, then you won't get viruses.
i still dont agree with you.... i neva eva went on bad sites when i last used my PC but there was still 1 time when i got the MyDoom virus.. explain that? n i aint making that up... i still u think u should do a quick scan for trojans coz u'll neva know u have 1 unless u scan or when the trojan takes affect ..
I think by "unprotected" system he means, not only without Anti-Virus software and/or Firewall, but also an old, original XP installation without any security fixes or service packs...
Worms like Blaster very quickly infect those systems if you're connected to the internet. You don't even have to visit any websites at all.
It does this by checking randomized IPs if there are vulnerable systems. If they found one it gets infected and will be used to generate more random IPs and infect more PCs
I used no anti-virus/malware/spyware software a few years back. I didn't get any viruses. The reason you get viruses is because you go to sertain websites that has them. You don't get them for no reason.
Or DosBox. DosBox will run Win 2.03 and above (currently, Win 1.0 is broken under DosBox) and if you don't have the actually copies of the program... *looks up at his inbox and waits with a smile...*
Had windows 2.03 on my first computer "Victor PCII" totally old. I removed all files except the games :D Yay for not understanding why it did not boot anymore.
Better than Windows Vista.

Dates on the screen show 1987. INet says release date was actually Jan 1988.
The competition at the time?
Mac 128K release date 1984. (SE was actually in 1989)
The Mac Plus and 512K enhanced were released around this timeframe.
Amiga 1000 release date was 1985.
Amiga 500 release date was 1987.
Windows outsold them all.
Microsoft were marketing genuises!!! ;-)

@desiv1 Nah, IBM were. Microsoft were just lucky.

Let's see - 1987 means you had a choice of:
Amiga Workbnech (with true multitasking)
Apple Mac System 4
Atari TOS
Commodore GEOS
Microsoft Windows 2
Of those I'd say the 4000-color and CD-quality-sound Amiga was best, the MacOS second best, and GEOS third best (a C=64 only cost $100 at that point). I wouldn't touch the other systems.

Windows Vista is the most secure Windows so far, and its not slow @ all
Ive tried to use Mac OS X Leopard on my computer, but it was slow as hell, and VERY incompatible with nearly all my hardware/software
Windows is better for home/gaming purposes, Mac is for Non-gamers which need a secure relatively crashfree environment to do their jobs
I stick to Windows Vista, my pc likes it the best (tried XP too, but not as fast as Vista)
