LoL when I first played this game, and saw the defendant for the first time, I was like I know I've seen that person before somewhere.... then the Judge said "Mr. Wright" I almost fell out of my chair.

@DarkkirbyKRPG Well seeing as they needed to get Phoenix out of the spotlight to let Apollo have his own game, but still managed to have him feature heavily in the story, I'd say that they did it in one of the best and most interesting ways possible.

And because Phoenix is cleared of any accusations AND it's heavily hinted at the end of Apollo Justice that Phoenix is going to re-take the Bar Exam, it seems probable that some sort of 'Phoenix's Return' game is on the way..

Do not worry, this game is a sort of "fan-fic" created by an outside production company than the first 3 games.

The story takes place if Maya never came back after leaving on that train in the first game. That is why Emma Skye is the only real familiar face in the game.
