As the Italians would say "We gave Gobbi to the world...and kept Taddei for ourselves!" I saw Giuseppe Taddei do Scarpia and Rigoletto in Philadelphia in the 60's. Truly unforgettable! The best I ever saw!
Dio mio, if only today they could think this way!!! If only they care for the soul in music and the color in the word!!!! But no, we live in a time of swiss clock and rush hour!!!! (damn century).
Lots of static around Callas's voice, hard to recognize, much darker than usual, very big voice then. Taddei voice more clearly recorded. Is this the right pitch/speed?
You should here Mr. Taddei's Iago from Otello and his Macbeth with Nielsen. Both of these are the best of all the recorded versions of these roles, in my opinion. Also, his Ernani is wonderful as well early Rigoletto with Lina Pagliughi and Ferruccio Taglivani. Many knowing opera experts believe he oper and Tito Gobbi are the greatest baritones in opera since the 1950s.
@sienaopera Of course Bastianini was a a great baritone with a great voice. Nothing against him. I don't think he was quiet up there with Gobbi and Taddei as an operatic actor.
Uffff Taddei MARVELOUS! Quality Taddei.

Come può ascoltare questo e non piangere? Anche i violoncelli piangono.
(How can one listen to this and not cry? Even the cellos weep.)

I think Taddei *is* quite well known ;)
He was brilliant in Andrea Chenier and Rigoletto as well, as well as the comic operas as Elisir and Nozze.
