  • I wonder how many of us cry when watching/listening to this particular video.. I always do. It was not needed to know IZ personally to know he was Pure Love, and he spread it to all around him. He must be watching us, still hoping that all who love Hawaii will show love to each other.

    Free the Hawaiian Nation!

  • miss you bruddah.

  • What a beautiful and blessed moment to see Makaha sons gather together up on stage. God Bless everyone that bruddah Iz touched thru his music, especially his wife n children.

  • It has been a long time since I cried my heart out. God bless you IZ, we miss the existence of persons like yourself in this cruel world. All the best to the the people of Hawaii from Lisbon, Portugal.

  • It has been a long time since I cried my heart out. God bless you IZ, we miss the existence of persons like yourself in this cruel world. All the best to the the people of Hawaii from Lisbon, Portugal.

  • I've never heard the recorded version and after hearing and seeing this video I'm pretty sure it would even come close. Thanks for sharing!

  • thanks for posting that wonderful moment !

i was crying all along the song.....thank you IZ ! i love you forever , you , your songs, your music and your nice soul.....

  • If you know the story about The Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau, then you understand what an amazing, emotionally heavy moment this was. Everyone who was there was deeply immersed in love. Eveybody cried.

  • One of the best moments in Hawaiian Music History! All you braddahs that are closet fans know you had chicken skin watching this!

  • Was für ein Verlust !!!

    R.I.P. - Iz

  • Unko "Iz" you are the true meaning of the Hawaiian island'z u will never B 4gotten mahalo keakua..! Rest in peace Unko aloha from kaua'i..!!!!!!!

  • Love, Live, IZ!!!!!!!!!

  • I wonder if any Hawaiian musicians will teach to love each other like Iz taught all of us. I wonder if there ever will be someone as charismatic as Iz. I wonder if there ever be a time when Hawaii has a leader to bring everyone together. I wonder...

Je me demande ...

  • btw: 1996 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. Hawaii Music Awards is a different awards.

  • Aloha for sharing this.....

  • I started crying when he started crying, and when the Makaha Sons came up on stage, and then at the end when Iz was crying when all were doing a group hug. Pretty sure this was their last time on stage together, after perfoming over 20 years as a group. Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau were 5, Moon, John and Jerome, and the two brothers Skippy and Israel. Skippy died like 12 years earlier, after this , Iz died, and now there are only the Makaha Sons. Thanks for posting this, never saw this one, Mahalo

  • @hankakah God goin do plenny good kine stuff fo him

  • @hankakah Actually, Iz was out of the group for many years before this show. Their parting was not amiable, and Iz once said that he would get back with the group "on the fourteenth of never" So that they all came together in the middle of this song is truly amazing, and a tribute to the power of Iz and his music.

Check the iqF5AvERMNg video to also hear his speech before this song, which was even more touching.

  • This was the awesome because this was the only time Brahda IZ and Makaha Sons Reunite together because they had an falling out . That why everyone in the crowed was crying . Just this night Makaha Son of Niihau was back together , what a lovely year that was .

  • Everytime I hear his music, it doesn't matter what he sings.. I start crying. Is it from hearing something so overwhelmingly angelic that my mind cannot fully take in all at once? Or is it because I know he is a pure soul? Or is it because... well whatever it is, I love this man! I hope I get to meet him when I pass away!

  • just when you think this world is about to explode with all the hate people have for each other , along comes this great man and his music and at least in my heart i feel maybe there is a chance for all of us. a dream or a reality well thats up to all of us. r.i.p. and bless all listening

  • IZ COME BACK WE LOVE YOU AND WE NEED YOU

RIP BUDDY ILL SEE U THERE WHEN MY TIME COMES

  • so so touching!!!

  • he was an still a god,

  • This song is out of this world. Im gona buy this :)

  • R.I.P. Braddah Iz - was a sad day indeed when you left us. I will never forget how I cried when I heard the announcement on the radio, and the thousands who lined up in the capital to pay you respect. Thank you for blessing us with your musical gifts for far too short a time.

  • Talk about "chicken skin!!!" One of the most memorable events ever. Thanks to the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau for always being there when I wanted to remember home...the 50th state when I was away on training or deployment. You guys have become part of the soundtrack of my life. R.I.P. Braddah Iz

  • This song reduces me to tears everytime. What a wonderful man with a great voice, lovely songs/texts.. we can all learn from Iz....What a great loss.....

  • This song is about Richard " piggy" Kaleohano who lives in Keaukaha on the Big Island. Piggy is founding member of the great Big Island group " the blahlahs". Kuulei Ahuna ( get his CD ) has already passed and was a member too. Incredible musicians..but even more so..incredible people. They are the epitomy of "hawaiian", that even influenced Bruddah Iz. Piggy has his own health issues now. Bruddah Piggy...enjoy life and family...mahalo for everything. Bimo

  • Wow. This video is priceless. But, you could easily tell Iz was having an awful time breathing, even then. God lifted him from his suffering, but allowed his message to be taken to the world.

Keep telling people about IZ, and about his message of love, especially to young people. What a treasure.

And, we can cry with them all, even today, because we are able to feel the love that Iz sent forth to us, then .. and still today.

    ~Aloha

  • Beautiful.

  • Nahenahe maoli kela! Three things in this video gave me chicken skin: Braddah Iz; Keali'i Reichel wiping tears from his eyes; & the heartfelt comments in several languages. Braddah Iz was truly loved by the whole world. Aloha a hui, e Ka Leo o Hawai'i Nei. Aloha no!

  • es lo mas sincero y como su ultima cancion la canto hermosa R.I.P

  • Iz was a great asset to the community I was in Oahu and saw his bronze bust. What a great man, you can tell the people miss him deeply. He is resting in peace now, but will remain in our hearts and minds.

  • This video gave me "chicken skin." There will never again be another Braddah Iz; the voice of the islands. May he rest in peace. His legacy will forever live on through his beautiful music.

  • Wow! That's the first time I've seen or heard this brilliant man. And I'm covered in goosebumps - what a voice! What an absolute prince among musicians.

  • yup...chicken skin all the way brah!

  • gorgeous!

we miss you iz. you live on in your music.

  • Wundervolle Musik von einem wundervollen Menschen.... Miss you... See you in heaven...

  • SIMPLESMENTE MARAVILHOSO

  • So powerful. RIP bruddah.

  • i'll miss you and your powerfull music forever RIP IZ

  • When I watched this on t.v. back in 96', I cried. It was very moving, when Moon, John, and Jerome came up on stage. Even now, watching it brings tears to my eyes. Brudda IZ will always be da man!

  • Ho! i catch chicken skin every time i hear bradda IZ's voice! Mean, LOve U and Rest In Peace Bradda!!!!

  • i always cry when i watch this

  • I get tears everytime I see this

  • JUST BEAUTIFUL!!!! Brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it!

  • To say that I was moved is an understatement.

  • i feel upset hearing he died already, he\s music can touch one's soul..may i know the cause of his death??

  • o bradda real chicken skin!!!!

  • beautiful song

the man who this song is about

i have his daughter as my teacher

    kassie kaleohano

    best hawaiian class ever

    R.I.P. braddah

    wish i got to knoe

  • i cried watching this

  • I'm glad that Bradduh IZ decided to give his life to the Lord in the years before his death....

That has to be the most touching performance ever in Hawaii.!!!!

  • bruddah IZ passed away to soon. he should lived for ever. he was a great singer and loved all his fans . Rip bruddah..

  • wow this is the first time ive ever heard a song or seen a movie or anything that actually made me tear

  • oh wow, that was nice! we all miss you braddah

  • wow!! unreal...beautiful...

    RIP BIg guy

  • I sure miss Bruddah IZ.

    Chicken skin indeed.

  • STRUGGENTE...SENZA PAROLE

  • This is probably the most chicken skin moment in Hawaiian music. I cannot help but weep every time I see it. This is not just a song about Kaleohano, but this is ho`oponopono between Iz and John, Jerome and Moon. I am glad they made things right before Iz went to Heaven. This is pure aloha, pure chicken skin.

  • I'm not going to bs you. I cried the first time I watched this.

  • And when you watch the audience, you can see Keali`i Reichel and more weeping, as well.

  • It's a song about a friend of thiers who lives on the big island who gave them a ride after a concert back to the airport and his way of life

  • What matters is that he left his footprints upon our beings based on old time Hawaiian values and beliefs of humility, Aloha, Kuleana and sharing your gifts to one and all. Kare au e warewaretia i a koe IZ he tuakana purotu koe me o ohana, Mauri Ora!

  • The Music is amazing and very inspiring, Im just really sory about his health. Well lets not worry about that and hear how IZ rocks ON!!!!!!!!!!!

  • can someone translate the lyrics of the song in english?

  • Simply a rare visual into the heart of this great man....his brother-in-law Moon is one of the most honorable men I have ever met, and one of my mentors....if Skippy and Sam Gray were there you would have the "original" Makaha Sons Of Niihau, who I think, are the greatest ever....I miss you my bruddah!

  • IZ is just an awesome musician and singer!

  • Pura emoçao!

  • Thanks for this video. Great music.

  • Powerful to watch even now!

  • God bless you IZ!You gave Hawaii and the world a great gift. You will always be missed!

  • Love you Iz.

  • So moving. People person indeed, love u Iz

  • God rest his soul ! 4ever in our heart ! TIAREFM Fan 4 life !!

  • I have both Iz and Jake's cd's in my arsonel and listen to them both equally. Jake wakes me up and Iz mellows me out. I agree

  • Thank you for sharing that. Never saw that IZ performance. Very touching.

  • you are so awesome <3<3<3 Aloha nui loa =D

  • Wow! Brings tears to your eyes. Thanks for sharing this video.

  • i miss braddah iz...good music...i so miss the 90's...i hate hawaii's music now, terrible songwriter's...only talk about girlz..lol

  • What about Kealii Reichel? I think Jake Shimabukuro is making the world notice ukulele's, Raiatea Helm or Kamau. Each one of them are very good examples of whats available right now

  • Beautiful. The true spirit of Hawaii.

  • So touching - I wept the whole way through this. (I have only 'discovered' Iz ... his music will now be with me forever.) ps: have always loved Somewhere Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World ... but never knew who sang it.

Now I do and am a fan for life.

God Rest his Soul, and thanks for the joy you have brought into our lives.

    xx

  • @FidgiLover It's unfortunate that Warner Music Group (which owns the publishing rights to Over The Rainbow) issued take-down orders to YouTube for all versions of the song. Among the first videos I'd ever posted was a memorial tribute to Bruddah IZ featuring Over The Rainbow/Wonderful World in the soundtrack. It recorded 2.5 million hits before WMG had it deleted. I derived not one dime and declined YouTube's offer at the time to partner with them and share in the ad revenues. Sad but true.

  • @VidBrats

but why? why did they take down all of somewhere oevr the rainbow videos ?

  • @choezkevin Because Warner Music Group owns the rights to the song and they are absolute asses about it. Fortunately, since the last time I commented about it, Mountain Apple Company (Bruddah IZ's longtime record label) has re-posted the original video on YouTube. I can't post a link here but do a search or look it up in my Faves. ^^

  • @VidBrats - Guys right now there are lots of copies of "Somewhere..." out there.

  • @TravelerDiogenes Yeah. I noticed. I guess WMG gave up on its DMCA takedowns. Mountain Apple Company (Bruddah IZ's label) has finally re-posted the only authorized copy. Ironically, when WMG went out on a bender a year or two ago it also took down Mountain Apple's "authorized" and licensed copy too LOL.

  • The most prolific, unsuspecting, emotional, and heart touching moment in the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards history, in matter of fact HAWAIIAN Music History! I was only 9 at the time and it was 11pm but I stayed up watching it and I knew at such an early age how emotional it was and everyone watching it live that evening and all that will watching will be touched and share a tear or two. No matter if you not Hawaiian this what life should be about, LOVE! Aloha.

  • @jd7deuce Why was the evening, particularly this part of it, so emotional and moving? Is it to do with the performance in general, or Bruddah IZ's health at the time or..? I am curious, not being insensitive.

    Very, very nice performance.

  • @slablilseb2 Not necessarily his performance but somehow we all knew his time here was short because of his health, plus no one knew he would be reunited on stage with his former bandmates. It wasn't planned. They had a falling out when he went solo but it seemed that night all that was forgotten... bygones were bygones. And we knew it was the last time they'd perform together. Bruddah IZ had already become legend in Hawaii and was loved by all.

  • @jd7deuce As a kid I lived in the Waikiki Shores Condos next to Fort Derussy and the Outrigger, which was the longtime home of the Don Ho Revue. I could hear him sing from the seawalk nearly every night. Bruddah IZ's songs bring back so many memories of those carefree days and all my brahs at Aiea High after we moved to the heights. Thanks for your comments. Mahalo!

  • I hope nobody made fun of him, he's a beautiful singer. It doesn't matter if he's overweight he's a beautiful singer and I don't see why anybody wouldn't like him.

  • i don't know if anyone here has posted the back story on this video. what made it even more poingnant was that the makaha sons and bruddah iz had broken up afew years prior and not on good terms; lots of hurt feelings and resentments on both parties. not to mention iz's deteriorating health.

this peformance transcended all the "pilikia" and was truly a cathartic moment for all involved in this performance.

  • Thanks for this deep touching video full of grace and love , mahalo Iz .

  • Rest in Heavenly Peace Bruddah IZ. We Love You. And to my Uncle Moon, John and Jerome, please keep doing what you're doing. We love you all. Sending love from AZ.

    K. Kauakahi

  • RIP Cousin Iz

  • RIP IZ. Aloha my Bruddah

  • Aloha Mahalo Much Love

  • this is one of the sadist, video,s i,ve ever seen and yes at the end bought a lump to my throat. living in the uk we didnt know much about the big guy, but really wished i had. rip big guy.

  • This is such a powerful and emotional video. Although Braddah Iz went his own way, The Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau will always be together in heart. They have played awesome music that many will remember.

    R.I.P. Braddah Israel Kamakawiwo'ole

  • This brought tears to my eyes. So very touching.

  • I had hoped someone would have had this moment from these awards and would eventually post it. Saw bits and pieces from the DVD but not the whole thing. Thank you for this. Very moving.

  • bruddah IZ is da bomest....<3 u bruddah IZ
