All these micro homes and I've yet to see a comprehensive solution to one major problem.where's the bathroom???? And if you are in the middle of the woods how do you get water to bathe properly if there is no running water on the property?how do you get it there?and if there's no septic system what do you do with the waste water?I figured out how to power the house with a 12v solar system but the problem of supplying water and dealing with the waste water eludes me.any suggestions? -Nate
Jay , I am going to be building one of these in the arctic soon! Inuvik, NWT, Canada, which is the northernmost town accessible by road. It will take a few modifications (no propane heating because the gas freezes here, more insulation, etc.) , but I think it will be worth it!
@TumbleweedHouses How do you keep people from stealing them? Really. I love the idea of buying the book of building plans your company has, but if I'm going to come home one day to an empty plot of land because someone literally took my home while I was at work... that would be no good! Please let me know if there is something that could make that avoidable! :) (Cute houses, by the way. They're very, very charming).
@TumbleweedHouses Howdy! :) I was wondering how much the wood alone would cost to build a 96 square foot home. (?) My reason for asking is that once you have the essentials and necessities (i.e wood, windows, furnace) everthing else can wait -- it's "all downhill from there", so to speak...at least for me anyways.
@TumbleweedHouses Hmm. What's the most commonly used wood for building these homes... or better yet what did Jay spend on the wood for his first home?
@TumbleweedHouses Ah I see. Thank You :) Believe me, I don't mean to heckle, but for a 96 sq ft tumbleweed home how much wood would I need....that's the more pertinent question than the cost (because costs for wood vary with suppliers, i presume). If you don't mind though, could you tell me what people spend, on average, for the two mentioned wood types when building a 96 sq ft tumbleweed home?
Im buying Shafer's book because im really dead-set on building one of these as soon as possible.
I have owned a 3200 sq foot home a 1800 sq foot home and a rv with one small bedroom about 18-20ft long on the ocean happiest days of my life.Small is cozy and if you are a private independent type of person tint homes are the way to go.
my garaje is bigger than that. but honestly , this is just non sence. i mean if your single , maybe. MAYBE. Whats next ? a cardboard box 10 feet square ?
And honestly, do you need all that space? What good is it? I immediately fell in love with Tumbleweed's Loring, New Vessica, and Harbinger. They are a bit bigger designs, but not that much. Man, I'd give anything to have one of these on a few acres of land. So cool! Time to start saving money. This just makes so much sense to me. Less space, less cleaning, less heating, cozy. I want one!!!
Ok so it looks cool, but why not just buy a travel trailer for ½ the price ? Hell, why not just build it yourself ? It is not that hard to build a house and this is more like a shed than a house anyway. Some 2x4's and plywood, then add the cute siding on the outside and you now have a $54,000 tiny home that cost you $1500. Travel trailers are easy to build as well. everything you need can be bought to fit in a small space from RV salvage yards or dealers.
That's a great point you make. You can build these from some salvaged materials and save a great deal of $. We certainly encourage that. Dee Williams did that, and she built her house for $10,000.
I suppose it might be possible to build a shed for $1500, but if you plan to live in it, you'll certainly need a heater and insulation, a bathroom and a kitchen, and those costs do add up.
To build it yourself out of new materials, it would cost about $20,000.
They'd probably be considered trailers. We have beach shacks about that size on the beach here (Australia) and they cost about 20,000 to buy but you don't even own the land they're on, you just own the little shack and you're not allowed to have electricity in nthem or sleep in them. They're about the size of these tiny homes.
What I can't find out is: where is there zoning to permit these homes? Zoning councils are nutso, elitist, now, despising mobile home, HUD dwellers. HOA's surely wouldn't allow a home this small . . . if anyone knows where these are truly legal, please post.
..in the low s.f. range howabout a travel trailer? Used these are plentiful, affordable and completely self-contained. (Matthew McConaughey's Airsteam was featured in Architectural Digest). At the price Mr. J is offering these little gems ($45,000) you could buy one helluva travel trailer. If you're single, like to rough it...and climb stairs, go for it. (God help you on the road on a windy day). Long and short of it Weed Homes are picturesque, and...well, actually that's all they are.
WOW these houses are pretty cool. I am from northeren Jersey and my home is 3,200 sq ft. Would be great for when the kids leave home. Needs to be in a state where there is nice weather all year long.
thease are realy cool i want one imagine no rent no electricity bills very low gas bills all my money could go in to something i want it to and to top it all off get to feel like a turtle taking your house with you where ever you go
Why not recycle and just get a used mobile home? Where I live in Canada today I could buy one with 672 sq ft for $12,000 and one with 1112 sq ft for $17,500 it is 14' x 64.
Does this wooden one have any better insulation properties than a mobile home made for the north?
I had a new mobile home and the gas/electric bills were huge and ridiculous. The windows and little insulation was crap. I now live in a 2,500 square foot house and the gas/electric is MUCH less than that rat and mouse infested, parked in a trailer park (nice reputation when you tell people where you live), piece of crap mobile home. Also, if you finance a mobile home through a co. like green tree, you'd better plan on being there forever. Nothing will go off the principle for years and years.
OMG, i totally love these little houses. id ditch my apartment and get one in a heartbeat if i could afford it!! They are swesome and environmentally friendly, right up my ally.
Reminds me of some shrimp boats you have to save space on these.I see these McMansions and wonder what are these people thinking who needs all that space what are you trying to prove? How much time do you really spend at your home anyway. Unless you are not well you will be away from home a lot. I want to go back to 8 hour work days what happened to that life? Folks work just to work and they don't own a thing in the end they get sick and have it all reposessed never owning a thing vanity.
These homes are beautiful, green, and economical. The Sustain MiniHome is much bigger and has the same pros but you get almost no bang for your buck at $120,000 for 325 square feet.
I love it, Is my dream house. Hey YSSOR23, que te parecen estas casitas son hermosas me facinan yo quiero una, Que lindo seria vivir en una casita asi, sin tener tantas cosas ser totalmente libre.
I want one....but can't decide which one. I won't build I will buy it.

We sell the plans to build the house yourself, or the completed house.
The materials are readily available at your local hardware store.
When you purchase the plans, you'll receive a detailed material list with specific measurements.

with no electricity and you can't sleep in them, that kinda defeats the whole purpose of having a shack on the beach
