@Pyroninja85 he is so used so doing his serve thats its all about timing. At that stage, he doesn't absolutely need to clearly see the ball to know where it is :D
wow, i've been looking for a pro to watch closely whose serve style is very similar to mine and boy have i found one! i bring my racquet back the same way, space my feet the same way...damn near everything. of course, monfils's serve is a wee bit better than mine, hahaha
I really really like his serve motion its very fluid and spot on as far as form is concerned the only thing that bugs me is his left moves just a tiny bit as he's tossing ... maybe its just because he's warming up but otherwise awesome serve to learn
Gotta love his serve. It's fluid, powerful, consistent. I like the way he stands with both feet closely together instead of pulling up the right leg during the service motion.
@dura1mater Surely you realize that due to the fact that it's only just warm-up, Monfils isn't serving at his full pace? Apparently not, some people just lack the requisite intelligence to make basic observations.
@rapter9800 Like I said I would crush these practice serves. I guess it takes requisite intelligence to know I was talking about crushing these practice serves.
Do I really need to walk you through everything that's wrong with this serve? He's mostly relying on his long arm (which is probably the fastest arm in the (tennis) world).
His takeback is flawed, I know it works most of the time, but when under pressure it's more likely to fall apart because of that extra little movement where he quickly takes the racket from beside his face to behind his back. Good form would be to already have it behind his back so the fast movement is simplified.
He serves great under pressure actually, i don't think you watch a lot of his matches but he is serving really well under pressure consistently. And what can we say about his serve apart from the fact that it is huge and that he has a lot of variety. He hits a lot of aces. In his matchups against Roddick, he is always outacing Roddick.
i think those are slices because i remember him serving against Giles Simon in a tornament once- the same in the T serve- and the commentary said it was slice. i think Monfils aced Simon twice with that serve for his service.
@orientaltony i live close by and it's just a bunch of mounded brown rocks. it also gets as hot as mars for about 6 mos/yr. can i interest you in some cheap desert real estate?
well think about it, when you want to jump really high dont you put your feet together?
look at basketball player when theyre shooting baskets, their feet arent too spread apart and the closer your feet are together the more you can load on your knees for a bigger jump
i sorta do this with my serve too, when im about to serve theyre far apart then right when i throw the ball i drag my back foot closer together with my front and i push off to hit the serve
Wow, nice environment. Now I really want to see America. xD

The silhouette on the wall behind the net is handy, really demonstrates how much the serve spins out. :)

Man... this guy would have such a massive serve if he used proper mechanics. What a waste.
dodododa 2 years ago
He has a massive serve with really good mechanics.

I like his twist serve to the add court. Difficult to reach when he's close to the center line.

Gman6755 2 years ago
That's a dumb reason to not like him.
jyy82993 2 years ago 2
did he change his service motion? it used to look like roddick's but now it looks more natural.
gradius55 2 years ago
seems like he reduced his knee bend. also his right leg seem to go more to the right on impact and after, compared to other pros
paulkielsmithdotcom 2 years ago
can someone tell me the benefit of serving with your feet that close together?
mansuliu 2 years ago
i think you get more air when you jump into your serves
aznheadinbed 2 years ago
i thought about that but i don't think its true cos ur legs cannot be that close when you jump

you mean the slice...
jasonxseo 2 years ago 2
@blubird243 you mean slice and flat. no kick up the middle on the ad court at 105
paulkielsmithdotcom 2 years ago
yes... its a slice that kicked to the right...
blubird243 2 years ago
i don't believe that this is possible for a righty :)
assailant85 2 years ago
what do you mean? thats what he did.. lol did you watch the video?
blubird243 2 years ago
yes i did. which serves do you mean? I think u meant the ones like 1:16 didn't u?
But i've never heard (or seen) a slice with a side-spin to the right by a righty and could not even imagine how that could work.
assailant85 2 years ago
uhhh wow this is the simplest slice serves ur ball should be going to the left if u use side spin right handed
martin8768 2 years ago
yeah, I know that. but the other guy said sth about a spin to the right! I don't know anything about that
