@spacepatrolman That's probably because the Cher version charted higher than The Byrds' version (in the US anyway). Depends on who you talk to, but I think it was more The Byrds' producer, Terry Melcher who had a problem with the Cher version. Cher had recorded the song simultaneously and Melcher was confident that he would "bury that bitch" (as he told Sonny Bono), with his Byrds production of the song.

Cher's vocal doesn't do justice to the song or Sonny's spector-ish arrangement/production. defeinitely sounds like she lost interest well before the end ! Thanks for the post tho, interesting :-)

Yes, and to add to this, this version is on the flip side of Cher's 45rpm hit single of "Bang Bang" which miss the number one spot in March of 1966. It stayed at number 2 for two weeks .

Sonny Bono wrote the song for Jackie Deshannon who was the first to record it
