I don't think it's in widespread use. AFAIK, the AK-74M is the main rifle in use. Some AEK-971 rifles are in use with the more elite Recon/Spetznaz type units of the VDV

@AHighPwner AK is a last century. The modern assault rifle of 21th centiry is AN-94. Special forces use it. Soon russian airborne troops and all ground forces will use AN-94. It has no recoil

@GAYAN89 slight correction yes some Spetsnaz units use the AN-94 but not ground forces or VDV its to complex and so the AEK will be preffered even though the AN is a beast of a gun :)

Hey... that's what makes the Russian airborne the best in the world. They are ready to go where no other armed force has gone before, and that gives then a distinct advantage in mobility and deployment speed. But yeah, I could never imagine myself in that seat . :)

Its no different than you jumping by yourself with a parachute. And the seats in the vehicle are designed to absorb the impact. Also they changed the cute arrangement and the absorption platform for even more smoother landings. You can clearly see that Sprut was released with about 9 smaller one, compared to 3 larger ones, that were in use in the last 30 or so years.
