I know these type movies are just an interpretation, but IF Vivian was in real life like she was portrayed in the movie, I would have mixed emotions about the situation. As in my opinion she was overbearing and very selfish and is in my opinion what drove him away.It doesn't excuse his behavior but at the same time I can sympathize with him, "In the movie" She came off in a way that would rub me the wrong way as well..

Johnny's 3rd daughter w/ Vivian (Kathleen) publicly stated that Vivian was portrayed by Ginnifer Goodwin as nagging & hard-riding - she said the movie's portrayal was inaccurate & unfair to her mother. Her half-brother John Carter Cash responded:

“I'm compassionately understanding. The point of the film is my parents' love affair.”

I read his Wikipedia and it says " He was well known for his laconic, focused demeanor on stage.
