  • Comment removed

  • WOW, I never even knew of this cartoon. But it is told by 2 sell out coon house retards. JAME EARL JONES & ALFRE WOODARD!!!!!!!!!!

  • The message of John Henry is supposed to be the deep ethical question of wether machines are always superior to people, the always believe in yourself is a bit hokey still a good short.

  • Dang that guy is stronger then the HULK!

  • I like it who the f... disliked this

  • Mark Henry's grandfather. We went from "Somebodys got to stand tall" at 5:49 to SOMEBODYS GONNA GET THEIR ASS KICKED.

  • Theres a first round draft pick if I ever saw one

  • Awesome

  • It's hard to believe this was made in 2000. From the style alone, I thought to myself 'Wow, a politically correct short by Walt Disney?' and then I found out what year it was actually made in and I'm just impressed by Disney made a cartoon in this style during the 21st century.

  • I watched this at school @ibojudian your so annoying retard

  • Surprised it went this way. I expected it to end like Paul Bunyan.

  • my childhood!

  • what is the title of the song that starts at 4:05? SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME

  • James Earl Jones. FTW!

  • i loove this song!

  • I want to play as someone like this dude in the enxt Red Faction. Screw Alex Mason, just call the guy John Henery and model him like this. Nobody will object.

Yeah, it's the hammer that made me think of that.

  • Disney got the message WRONG, but the music? Home-Run.

  • D'aw when they jumped the broom... how did I not know this? I like this musical take on the legend. I have some issues with disney but I can't say no to old-fashioned musical shorts.

  • To clarify, because I think it's being misinterpreted, my issue here is not that they're discussing race- race needs to be discussed. My issue here is that they took a story that, in its original form- and you can look this up- did not really address race, or at least did not make it central to the plot, and they took it and figured, if the protagonist is black, his story and struggle HAVE to be defined by race- because a black protagonist couldn't possibly address anything else.

  • The story wouldnt have NEARLY the same impact if he were white, so in my opinon you have to emphasize his race.

  • if u didnt "play" John Henry's race there'd be no point in telling the story. His origins/race is what made him a "hero"/role model.

  • This is not the video I remember seeing growing up. This one is done like a propaganda film.

  • @lgboJudean well someone needs to calm down lol

  • i like the song at the beginning

  • i really wanted to know if this was real or not, i know its a folklore or myth, but i mean stories get passed down generation to generation and u dont kno if their real or not

  • When I saw the part after the contest I freaked out. WHY DID YOU HAVE TO DIE!?

  • @wassupppls123 nothing worth doing in life is ever easy

  • i love it when the blacks sing and i am not raceses

  • @johncluxton

Learn how to spell "racist" dumbass.

  • @IgboJudean uh that was my 4 year old brother stupid

  • @johncluxton

No it wasn't. That was your retarded ass that posted that.

  • I remmber this from 4th grade:)

  • holy shit, it's darth vader!

  • this is my favorite tall tale JOHN HENRY was a steel drivin man and he did it with pride and honor and whole lotta hope

  • @cDC1457 and a bigass hammer

  • @cDC1457 its not a tall tale he was real

  • never so inspired by a black guy

  • SUBJUGATE THE MUD RACES! I mean... YEAH FREEDOM!

  • Communism

  • John Had Been Working All Day Already Soo Fuck That Machine.

  • Man, he is hot.

  • Johnny Cash Does a KILLER Song About John!!!!

  • John Henry was 5 feet tall

    Just sayin

  • @hotlavaman

    Nope a million feet tall

  • :D hey it's Mufasa!

  • As great as it would be to see a movie about him. I'm kinda worried that Disney today would botch it up somehow. Not to completely diss them, they did a fair to decent job on "The princess and the frog" and "Tangled", but something just seems like it's missing. (Shrugs shoulders)

  • we sang this song in school lol

  • i tried hard to find this i thought about it,, now i finally found it yes

  • I love this... I am 26 and still tear up watching this.. the music is excellent....

  • If i ever have a son, his name will be John Henry ^^

  • james earl jones is john henry's son

  • everything about john was extra extra large………mmm

  • when i have kids, stuff like this is what they'll be watching. (:

  • I completely forgot James Earl Jones was involved in this. That makes this 10,000 times better, as it does everything.

  • How come Disney doesn't have a full length feature film on John Henry. This is a great short. I'd watch the movie. A truly powerful folktale of human triumph. America needs a strong, working man to look up to

  • steroids mofo

  • love the song

  • Needs to be a video of just the John Henry song. :-O

  • @TheCoolnerd95 *THERE needs to be

  • Racial equality is certainly a thing I support and a good moral for a story to have, and I hope there are many stories that have it, but I never understood it to be the point of John Henry's story- the John Henry story, to me, was about human perseverance, the working man, and the triumph of the human spirit, in a way that transcends race. I never knew John Henry's race nor cared. Not every story with a black protagonist is about his race.

  • @CrawdaddyJoe This man.

    This man understands.

  • @CrawdaddyJoe Well, you probably feel the way you do because you're stupid.

  • I completely agree with you -- some heroes are so great, it's silly to play their race too much; that's not what they are all about.

  • @CrawdaddyJoe I'd say that while there's more to John Henry's story than the racial aspect, you have to be a white man to think race isn't a huge part of it.

  • @Lurdiak Eh, in *this* version, race is a huge part. In the original songs his race is never mentioned, and the original story doesn't focus on race. I'm not trying to be one of those 'color-blind' whites here who ignores race as a way to deny racism- obviously there are always racial dynamics at work in a racist society. But, I think it's troubling when we have a story, from a mixed community, about a black man, and it has to be about his race. Black people have other stuff going on, too.

  • @Lurdiak I mean, if the story had been about race, I would have no problem with it, but I think that it's sort of essentialist, sort of pigeon-holing, when the story with the black protagonist HAS to be about race- can't a story with a black protagonist be about the same themes as a story with a white protagonist? Why does Disney feel that, because the protagonist is black, he can't have a story or a struggle that isn't defined heavily by the color of his skin? That's what I find annoying here.

  • @CrawdaddyJoe Was it supposed to be? Being an african american role model deosn't mean your story is nesesarilly about race.

  • did the man in the beginning play the voice of mufasa from the lion king????

  • @xxvictorinofanxx101 thats cause its the same guy, his name is james earl jones, his voice is famous, he was the voice of darth vader

  • @xxvictorinofanxx101 Yup. And Darth Vader. God how I love his voice...

  • Is the story-teller Doc Facilier?

  • wow havent seen this since 1st grade thanks for uploadin

  • 19 people started buildin' railroads yesterday. Just saying.

I had this VHS when I was younger, and I always got motivated by John Henry's story. DETERMINATION.

  • "I'm 40 years old and I get motivated from this story!"

  • Is just is the other John Henry AKA "Steel" from DC

  • chuck norris learned bad assery from john henry

  • I own this on VHS and this if my favorite one, the story, and the song. John Henry was a mighty man!!

  • he was about to stop his wife got him killed =/

  • i have this tape used to watch it everyday

  • Hammers through a mountain by himself what a badass

  • anyone know the name of the song?

  • 19 men didn't start laying railroads.

  • I made John Henry on SCIV.

  • And when did you start building railroads? Today.

  • damn this is badass!

  • I watched this in first grade... and I was addicted to the song every since then but I couldn't remember the lyrics. Now I look up John Henry for my school tall tales project and find it. What are the odds...

  • i watch this today in my school

  • Chuck Norris read his kids John Henry before they went to bed

  • usually hate to say stuff like this, but daum, John Henry is the manliest manly man ever!

  • @Stretchypantsmaster I agree! He showed that man can defeat manchine.

  • @DirkMustard, yes. And to quote Forrest Gump, "That's all I have to say about that."

  • @DirkMustard, yes indeed. After all, that's part of why legends and tall tales were created, to entertain and inspire people as they worked to build a new nation.

  • 5:37-5:44 is my favorite part of this clip. John's defiantly standing in front of the mammoth steam drill as if to say, "I may be only flesh and bone, but steam and iron doesn't scare me AT ALL!"

  • @DirkMustard, while John Henry may only exist as a mythical character, he was created as a representation of the men who tirelessly worked to build the railroads that would soon span the continent. Additionally, the stories of his heroic deeds served as an inspiration for these very same workers.

  • 2:57 is called foreshadowing for those who failed english.

  • This was my role model growing up ... This is who I wanted to be like.

Now Justin Beiber is a role model for kids ... That is who they want to be like.

If you are going to throw you kids in front of the TV ... atleast put quality shit like this in their brains.

  • Jimmy Dean was right. It's hard to get the best of a man named John.

  • What we don't know about history, we are DOOMED to repeat it.

  • any body know were i can find the full version of john henry song in this vid?

  • steel lol

  • @pandafatxXx it was both. The Chinese immigrants worked on the railroad from the west, starting from Sacramento, CA. Meanwhile, former black slaves, Irish immigrants, and civil war veterans worked on what was to be a connecting railroad in the east, starting in Omaha, NE. They both had a race toward a finish line, where the rails were to meet at Promontory Summit in the 1860s. Man, I'm such a history geek :P

  • i love how they show his wife right by his side. and i love black music, it has so much rhythm in it.

  • Why doesn't Disney just make a film about him I'm mean he's not be a prince but he was a hero and a role model

  • @TheMOVIEMANIAC13 Because the content and impact of a story can never be measured by length of time, which do you remeber better? Sleeping Beauty or this? We have the right to ask for something more focused and longer, but nothing would be able to replicate the impact this video has had.

    Simple as that.

  • i saw this video at school

  • Is the narrator darth vader?

  • @TheKaizer0007 Yep. James Earl Jones did the voice of Darth Vader.

  • I believe that John Henry was a slave just like Harriet Tubman.

  • this reminds me of Johnny Cash!!! HEY I thought the majority of the workforce were Chinese immigrants not blacks and whites.

  • @pandafatxXx The workforce was a mix of various immigrants and Americans alike. It's a rich history :)

  • can u just find the song

  • Is there a video with only the John Henry song? I can't find it anywhere!

  • 3:42 srry like this song ^^

  • i got a rainbow ring ring no it aint gonna rain rign ring

and he swam both ways to catch a cross-eyed-bass

But he threw it on the ground and said "I can't eat that"
