@nubiansista4life I think Mike's style is more modern, coming out of the fusion school which we all were on at the time. Eddie built his style on blues and those players that came out of that school. As for Mike being louder, that likely wasn't on Mike. I get the feeling that there may have been politics at play.
@mastersid02 I believe Mike wanted to model his style towards heavy metal which tend to be loud and raucous. Also, he maintained superiority over Eddie if you were not able to hear Eddie play and could only hear Mike. That's my opinion and I'm standing behind it.
On bass is Rodney "Skeet" Curtis and on drums is Dennis Chambers. Michael and Eddie are both great, but no one can mimic the way Eddie plays and the ways he shakes that guitar to get the vibrato sound.
Mike had to show Eddie that he could get down too. No disrespect to Eddie. We KNOW he's the master... It's just that the Kidd Funkadelic had a point to prove.
Eddie was highly disrespected when GClinton gave the song to MH who could only shred it--no fluidity in his style. Maybe I'm just too old-skool where young people gave their props to their mentors.
Poor Eddie. Disrespected while he was alive and now while he's gone. I go from website to website correcting such minor things. Pointing out that the picture is really Bootsy and not Eddie. Pathetic.
@stellahazel hey, i noticed you seem to know a lot about Eddie Hazel(understatement). I'm a HUGE fan and would love to learn as much as I can and should know about Eddie Hazel because it's hard to find information on him. Mr.Hazel is my favorite guitarist and I would really appreciate any insight you're willing to give me
well on the other side without mh i would have never found eddie and after that i read his bio instant as i found him on youtube. mh is the kidd off a new generation after eddie and i think he does a great job on the song if you forget that it's eddie's song and so i listen to it hoping that someday someone rips his video's to digital with eddie on it
@maestrotee You're right! Eddie Hazel also played on the recording of "Hardcore Jollies" and was not credited on the album. George Clinton probably didn't want Eddie to upstage Hampton and the relationship was somewhat chili after after Eddie did work with the Temptations on Motown Records and his solo project: "Games, Dames and Guitar Thangs"
Saw these guys in79 and its still one of three greatest guitar moments of my life along with free bird by skynard and comfortly numb by pink floyd but this one is the best one
Everytime i hear this song it takes me somewhere. This isnt just guitar players playing, this is mood altering genius! I love the fact that they allow the notes to ring out!
its a shame society and the media denied so many this era of music by not putting these guys in the limelight, some of the greatest performers ever were part of the funkadelic-parliament group.PLs take time to enjoy and relive an era a music that truley even in this time frame untouchable, got to see this group live in 1977 when they sold out the show for one night but turned around and stayed another night so all can see and enjoy, the barkays didnt stay and they filled in the whole time amazing.
i'm not here to brag, but i want people to know that after eddie did this song, he changed. it's like the song sucked his soul right out of him. i met him in 1968, we were both 18. i spent most of that summer with him. he was so full of life and so much fun. i don't think its a coincidence that he went into a tailspin after maggot brain. he was just different. i never could figure it out. i love him still, with everything in me. i last saw him in 1983. he's my guy.
Fkkn can't hear Eddie over Michael! Michael walked on Eddie's notes and never gave him a solo...wanted a minute of sweetness in all of that metal guitar from Michael!
only p funk would do this eddie and mike together on stage playing maggot brain hell haZEL RECOMMEMNED MIKE TO GEORGE WHILE HE WAS DOING HIS PRISON bit yeah eddie missed the mothership connection tour and whewn he was released vfrom jailo the funk mob grew he still continued to record ansd made hundreds of demos in that era the problem was when will they be released.
This song is a guitar players dream solo,.it gives me a hard-on from a guitar players point of view that is,..I'm doing this song on stage now in Jackson ,Ms....stay tuned and cum see me try to re-create the emotion of this song,..you will get off.........C.J (Big C )
I think they're better than Hendrix. Better than anyone else. The emotion in this song is simply unequaled. It's stratospheric. I can't even believe my own ears when I hear it.
It's by far my favorite song ever and the reason why I'm playing guitar today
I wish I could have been there to feel the energy in that concert hall while these two giants on the guitar demonstrated their brilliance. They may not be the best, but I can think of none better, other than Hendrix. DAM!
Skinny Skeet and Dennis Chambers in pink tights are some things that will never be seen again. Then there's Eddie & Mike together. At this point, Eddie was a victim of inter-group politics and no matter how loud he thought he was, he was on stage,he was not going to be as loud as Mike in the house. Passing of the old guard to the new. I wish we could hear what Eddie doing because he IS killing.
Its funny to see sometimes. There's a video of them doing Knee Deep in Germany. Michael does his solo and everything, but at the end of his solo Eddie plays like 20 second riff that just blows me away and was better than Mike's entire solo. But that's the life of the artist.. RIP Eddie
Maggot Brain is a state of mind...in my opinion it's a feeling most of us search for for years...everyone feels it a little differently but for me it's an innter peace that I find when I experience true sorrow...but at the same time I don't mind, it heals
@NuDelic Of course that would be Eddie before ill health. Eddie is so much better at playing music for the soul. Everytime I hear his playing I feel like I'm drowning and then I can't hardly breathe. Yeah, I'm a Hazeloholic!!!
I love and hate this song. It's so damn good, but it always leaves me wanting more, and NO ONE has reproduced a song that conveys this much emotion in my opinion.
Classic song and performance! I wished that George wouldve did the original intro to this song instead of doing the intro to the song " Red Hot Mama " at the beginning of this video clip.
George Clinton is high as shit on this... totally different intro and if you don't know eddie was asked before writing this song to make some of the saddest sounding music he could so eddie went into the studio and thought about his mother's death... powerful fuckin music!
If jim hendrix wood have live he would have been playing with these guy george wanted henddrix, hamtpon and hazel the three baddas black G players at that time.kidd
i let some of my friends listen to this song, and i told them that this was by jimi hendrix. they all believed me. i think that eddie hazel and michael hampton are worthy guitarists whos names hang right up there with jimi himself
You're kidding right? That's a young George Clinton. Lot older and fatter now but, still smoking just as much "P" Funk as back when this video was dropped.
.i meet michael & eddie, gary mudd bone coope & i r from the same home towm & went 2 scholl 2gether we r still intouch GARY COOPER HAS A NEW CD OUT NAME ( FRESH MUDD )produced by dave stuart .i'm 52 yrs ,ur all shit heads, listen to the majors & miners the white music produuces said it could' be done, eddie hazeel was the greatest player of all time i can give u'll all al ittle of music history' music said it couldn't be done, they proved it wrong!! funkateer 4ever.
Eddie Hazel's Maggot Brain was voted #3 (I think) in all time guitar solos. Jimi was Jimi but, you need to check all of the Eddie Hazel stuff out b4 you crown Jimi the all time King. Surf for California Dreaming. Hell, even some of the live versions of Purple Rain sound better than some of Jimi's stuff. Jimi was cool but, you have people like Eddie, Michael Hampton, Ernie Isley, Prince, Slash that stomp some of Jimi's stuff.
That's what makes all this bloggin stuff cool. Different strokes 4 different folks and it's all good. Different generations will pick different peeps. Sort of like who is the best basketball or football player or home run king. I love Jimi 2 but, he's not my #1 choice. Top 5 not just #1. Peace
noone can be compared to hendrix. Hendrix is law unto himself. So these guys a amazing, and I love this song. But I'm afraid hendrix is untouchable and might always be.
I reckon he can be, jimi hendrix has more solo but both are the same for me. its like saying who better mozart or beethoven its all about who you like.
are you correcting me? or agreeing with the post above mine. as a "friend of funkadelic", i saw the transistion from acid to heroin. someone suggested to eddie that he might sound better with heroin instead of acid. i was with eddie and tiki the night they started using, in the early 70's, i believe, and doing hit for hit with them. no one had to tell me this was going to lead to nothing but bad news....it did.
eddie, tiki and i were best buds from 1968-1970. we often stayed at tiki's apt in detroit. tiki was my "bodyguard" when i went to concerts with them because black girls were always wanted to fight with me. he had "philly" street smarts & could shut them up with just a glare. eddie was a lover, never a fighter, so tiki covered those bases for him.
i think the "like your mama died" is a myth. eddie and his mom weren't speaking at the time, major argument.
must have felt like being part of history in the making , as most people say , P Funk The non profit organisation. i am 26 now , a new generation and like with a lot of other players that died to young i listen almost daily to them. the album of the red hot chili peppers that george produced had also a lot of p funk influences :)
their music seems to be timeless--i still listen to funkadelic from 1969and on. my hobby now is finding out what other bands they played with...and there are so many. i just got an lp from ebay that has eddie, billy b and ray davis on it. it was recorded from tapes found from around 68-69 in plainfield, nj. new things pop up everyday. one of the kids from parliament is sending me "basement" recordings of eddie. i can't wait to hear it!
it was Free Your Mind that was recorded with everyone on LSD. Maggot Brain was recorded later...and they had moved on to heroin. gclinton told eddie he sounded better on heroin and provided it for him. it was how he controlled the band.
sometimes what is written isn't correct...in this case on purpose, I think. anyway, mhampton is just as bad off now as eddie was. it's really sad
I totally agree with you, eddie the only person with the unique ability to turn electric guitar sounds into funk sounds. But mhampton is still good and alot better then alot of the guitarist now, Im not gonna give any guitarist name (ahem slash and guitarist in kiss..etc).
..Justin Bieber is just a maggot......dont even compare that fat worm to Funkadelic...what an Ignorant asshole...

a couple things when i always watch this clip.
1. Always wish he would either have turned up or somebody turned Mike Hampton down a tad bit.
2. He always used a different guitar. A Les Paul would have been perfect(again) for the situation, instead of the jackson or whatever that is.

Wasn't born. I know George Clinton, but I never really had a picture in my head of what he looked like. Thanx tho.
Cloudwacher22 4 years ago
You're kidding right? That's a young George Clinton. Lot older and fatter now but, still smoking just as much "P" Funk as back when this video was dropped.
Buutzilla 4 years ago
P-Funk got to have the best guitarists ever. They will give any rock group a run for their money. WHO SAID A FUNK BAND CAN'T ROCK????

it doesn't sound anything like Jimi. I think it sounds cool, but its not Jimi, dude. Its more like Roger Waters.

Buutzilla 4 years ago 2
That's cool that you think that way, but i disagree wholeheartedly. Jimi trumps all of them, in my opinion.
licketysplit101 4 years ago
That's what makes all this bloggin stuff cool. Different strokes 4 different folks and it's all good. Different generations will pick different peeps. Sort of like who is the best basketball or football player or home run king. I love Jimi 2 but, he's not my #1 choice. Top 5 not just #1. Peace
Buutzilla 4 years ago
sweet man. Glad you think that way. Different strokes, bro.

nigga fuck you. Eddie Hazel can totally be compared to Jimi in every way.

noone can be compared to hendrix. Hendrix is law unto himself. So these guys a amazing, and I love this song. But I'm afraid hendrix is untouchable and might always be.

RIP Jimi.

I reckon he can be, jimi hendrix has more solo but both are the same for me. its like saying who better mozart or beethoven its all about who you like.

I think you gotta remember that Jimi started it all. It wouldn't be any off those players in the form we know them now if it wasn't for Mr. Hendrix

when maggot brain was recorded, they had moved on to heroin.
stellahazel 2 years ago
LSD or acid
rei161 2 years ago
are you correcting me? or agreeing with the post above mine. as a "friend of funkadelic", i saw the transistion from acid to heroin. someone suggested to eddie that he might sound better with heroin instead of acid. i was with eddie and tiki the night they started using, in the early 70's, i believe, and doing hit for hit with them. no one had to tell me this was going to lead to nothing but bad news....it did.
stellahazel 2 years ago
Are you serious?
AS the story of "Maggot Brain" goes, George Clinton told Eddie Hazel to "play like his mother just died"!
Scary isn't it?
You knew Eddie and Tiki?
funkfan48 2 years ago
eddie, tiki and i were best buds from 1968-1970. we often stayed at tiki's apt in detroit. tiki was my "bodyguard" when i went to concerts with them because black girls were always wanted to fight with me. he had "philly" street smarts & could shut them up with just a glare. eddie was a lover, never a fighter, so tiki covered those bases for him.
i think the "like your mama died" is a myth. eddie and his mom weren't speaking at the time, major argument.
stellahazel 2 years ago
must have felt like being part of history in the making , as most people say , P Funk The non profit organisation. i am 26 now , a new generation and like with a lot of other players that died to young i listen almost daily to them. the album of the red hot chili peppers that george produced had also a lot of p funk influences :)
Reezer83 2 years ago
their music seems to be timeless--i still listen to funkadelic from 1969and on. my hobby now is finding out what other bands they played with...and there are so many. i just got an lp from ebay that has eddie, billy b and ray davis on it. it was recorded from tapes found from around 68-69 in plainfield, nj. new things pop up everyday. one of the kids from parliament is sending me "basement" recordings of eddie. i can't wait to hear it!

@stellahazel sorry for any disrespect. I just read that they were on LSD when they done this song
rei161 2 years ago
it was Free Your Mind that was recorded with everyone on LSD. Maggot Brain was recorded later...and they had moved on to heroin. gclinton told eddie he sounded better on heroin and provided it for him. it was how he controlled the band.
sometimes what is written isn't correct...in this case on purpose, I think. anyway, mhampton is just as bad off now as eddie was. it's really sad
stellahazel 2 years ago
I totally agree with you, eddie the only person with the unique ability to turn electric guitar sounds into funk sounds. But mhampton is still good and alot better then alot of the guitarist now, Im not gonna give any guitarist name (ahem slash and guitarist in kiss..etc).
