captivating every time - timeless song sung by a guy who had a ridiculous amount of real talent and stage presence - American Idol & others need to get off the air-they will never hold a candle to stuff like this, or even the great variety shows of the 60s & 70s,for that matter...thank you, zatara2000 and others on youtube for helping me to stay "back in the day" and have easy access to real music !
This is from a late '64 edition of Ready Steady Go, a Friday-night pop tv show on Rediffusion TV, the London commercial tv station. Ground-breaking tv, with the audience and cameras vying for space in the studio. It was broadcast live at around 6:30pm from central London (Kingsway studios, long gone) and often had to be altered and cut whilst broadcasting. Absolutely of the time!
For the technology that they lacked back then, it makes one appreciate the talent he had. However, he should be very thankful that Cyndi Lauper wasn't around with her rendition of this song because his would have been known as a fair version in comparison.
What I loved about Gene Pitney was that he needed no fancy moves or gimmicks. He just stood there and used that marvellous voice of his. This man never made a bad record imo.
Oh someone go and get the big knife. This is a voice that rips your heart out. No one sounds like Pitney but Pitney. God knew what He was doing when He gave this voice to Gene.
this should be sung before all high school sporting events -- teach today's rap-blasting idiots some manners and class, and remind them that real music used to be composed.
I'll bet there is talent like this out there today,,but i dont have have enough time to search for it. there was no need to search for talent in the 60s. it was all around you. thank God for places like youtube. thanks for uploading this classic..
Man oh man - how did he manage the ending of that song? The notes keep getting higher and higher and the power doesn't let up! Goosebumps! Thanks so much for posting this!
Wouldn't it have been great if we could have had the quartet of Gene, Jay Black (of Jay and the Americans), Roy Orbison and Tom Jones do this song together? Some might want to include Elvis too...

One of the classic voices of all time. He was always so effortless. How lucky we were to have this man sing the songs he did. It was a great era. One of the truly great songs of all time.
Oh someone just get me the big knife I am ready to die. This song is a true classic, Gene took it to a level unknown by any other artist. This is my favorite song of all time.
@ELPSTER1 You are absolutely right! Singers like that are not around anymore. This era had the true talent, such as Gene, The Righteous Brothers, Four Tops, ect, ect.
In the Spring of 1962 I went through Basic Training at Lackland AFB, Texas. One day we had to work KP. Gene Pitney was also going through Basic Training for the National Guard or Reserves at the time and we worked the same KP that day. If you ever worked KP in the military you know that you don't have much time to fool around. So I just got to shake Gene's hand and exchange greetings. Something I'll never forget.
This is actually an extraordinary song. Beyond Gene's amazing voice and phrasing, I believe this song is quite unique in its structure. Think about it. There's no chorus or verses. It simply builds its story towards a climax, which Gene delivers with power and mastery.
@geoff2204 Thanks for breaking that down... this song has always been my favorite song by him and you're right....it just keeps building and building until it reaches this great crechendo.....Wow, it takes your breath away... What a voice.
If that ending doesn't bring goosebumps call a funeral director cus you are dead and don't know it. Gene's version of this is the best that ever was. Still gives me goosebumps after 47 yrs. The man was in a league of his own and unmatched.
This man has one of if not the best voice range of any male singer I have ever listened to. His songs are timeless and he is sorely missed in the world of music.
@mkennedy904 You might try checking out a young man named Declan Galbraith. He's from England. Start out by checking out his song Tell Me Why and from the up. Nothing Else Matters shows his wide range. He is the one singing from the beginning to the end.
@mkennedy904 And you would be right. I don't think there was ever a better tenor than Gene in my 58 yrs. This is the song that hooked me at 13 and he's been my favorite male singer since. He left a great legacy of wonderful music, with a voice that was truly unique and beyond compare.
This man has one of if not the best voice range of any male singer I have ever listened to. His songs are timeless and he is sorely missed in the world of music.

@madelaine5021 Glad you agree, I just find it hard to believe there were not a ton of covers of this great song. Had to be because it was very hard to sing. It's a tenor's song but I have never heard anyone but Cindy Lauper try to sing it. Thanks for responding and Happy Holidays

@Ricbir1 i gotta agree ric. his range is effortless and he does st use a falsetto. they don t make them like Roy , Gene , or Del anymore. todays music is garbage with singers although a few exceptions cant sing without electronic help and songs are meaningless.
@ironrick46 could not agree more saw Del Shannon back in early seventies twice in one night with only an organist &drummer backing him at both venues and he sounded absolutely brilliant
I had the privilage of seeing Gene perform in a club called Blighty's, back in Bolton, in the 70's. I went to see 6 shows in the same week, and had a drink with him after. My favourite singer of all time. A true gentleman. Sadly missed.
Gene was so friendly. We emailed back and forth for a year. He arranged two free tickets for my son who was living in London when he gave a concert there. So down to earth and an amazing voice.
@kevintyn What a beautiful story. Heard he was a very nice man. Never heard a negative thing said about him. He is so missed. He is part of my youth and stayed there for a lifetime. The man was pure genius. You would never mistake his voice for someone else's. He stood alone.

The 'European music show' is Britain's 'Ready Steady Go' - the year, 1964. The gal who throws her arms around him at the end seems like the same girl who follows him down the walkway (directly behind him).
Not sure if anyone else has written this, but Cyndi Lauper does a truly exceptional cover of this song. Gene is great. Don't get me wrong. But Cyn does this song justice, for sure.
I met Gene when I was eleven and had the privilege of sitting in to watch his concert rehearsal from the stage wings - and again the following year. It was marvellous to be able to go to watch him again at a concert in the UK, over forty years later. He remains one of my favourite singers. THe final notes in this song are awesome.
Love this song & love this man, I had the honour of meeting & talking with him when I was 16 & I was totally awestruck. He was a perfect gentleman. Saw him twice in concert years later and boy could he still belt out those hits!! What a sad day for music when he passed away.
@tworedballoons ok you are another one I envy, what a wonderful memory. I never got to see him in person, and it's one of the things I regret big time. You got to meet him, that's a double envy lol
@tworedballoons Wow, that's such a cool memory to have. I always thought he would've been a really sweet guy. Glad to know he was... This song is amazing and this concert video is the best. I especially love that girl who was so awestruck by him and she grabbed him to hug him at the end...
Gene Pitney was just so fantastic a singer (and a good writer too). He utilized his Italian background via some of the musical instruments. What a town with pity and how a world without Pitney .. but I've got to be strong and let him go his way. RIP.
Have you check out a great young singer - his name - Jal Joshua - check it out on your tube. One Voice, Hallelujia, Don't Cry Out Loud...... They are all great, check it out.
His body language is just magnificent. A strong jaw. Did you see how some gal just throws her arms around him at the last second ? Chick dig that moody stuff.
One of the REAL talents, as were so many during that era. Shame you don't hear this on the radio (agree, werbeone). i like upbeat version by Bill Medley, and great version by Cindi Lauper, but this is truly a special treat and I play this often. Thank you for posting!
Gene Pitney songs always take me back to elementary school in Kokomo, Indiana. The only thing "bad" about this song is it's one of my favorites and you NEVER hear it on "oldies" radio. Like so many of Orbison's songs, also.
The girls who dressed black had fallowed him fanatically , no wander she love his voice, the some way I do!!!! How much we are missing you Gene!!!! Wow! !!!!! Juan Arica Chile
Gene was a life guard when younger and practiced going under water for long periods of time. As much as 5 minutes. I traveled with a band in the 60's and talked with him. He never tired of talking music technique. He was uncomproming when performing and the Background music was as much the same as original recordings . He was a perfectionist . We tried to write some music for him. It did not work out. Had I met him later on we had a couple songs that would have been Pitney type songs. RIP Gene.
Gene was never underated, he had something like 25 records that reached the top ten and was loved by millions. His music died with Elvis's and Roy's with the British Invasion. He and Roy went there and had great success. We just missed it.
Actually, I sang this song a lot in the 60's, I had great falsetto back then but, there's only one Gene Pitney! Excuse me, I must go and finish building my time machine.
It's Ready Steady Go from 1964. The show was made by London-based Rediffusion which held the commercial TV franchise for the city until 1968. It was broadcast across the ITV network in the UK. Ready Steady Go was broadcast on Friday evenings.
I went to see him in concert the year before he died, first and only concert I've ever been to, can't remember if he sang this though, but just wanted to say it was a lovely night and made a huge difference in my life because I was suffering from bad depression and didn't find it easy leaving my house.
GraceUnderPressure1...I also..started recently to feel very depressed!..Hard to get out of bed..drive 15 miles to get a newspaper....Hard, like you to leave the home..I really do NOT know why I am getting like this..but, anyway..just want to THANK you for this post......RIC!!
One of my very fave songs by Gene. I would love it if they made a movie about him. Tryouts for anyone who could cover his songs would be really interesting!
I thought Gene Pitney had such an unusual voice, gosh what a range, Saw him in concert, it was just awesome. They just don't have music today like that
I agree. I was a littlekid in the 60s and grew up listening to him. Saw him live twice, 10 years apart - fantastic show, amazing voice, lovely man.Such a shame he was far from his family when he passed. x
I never hear his stuff anymore. Why has he been forgotten? He was absolutely one of the best who we clearly do not have a match for today. Glad I was a teen in the 60's - when there was real talent out there to entertain us..
16 DISLIKES!?
Wow.... must be 16 16 year olds who never had a childhood.

@tworedballoons ok you are another one I envy, what a wonderful memory. I never got to see him in person, and it's one of the things I regret big time. You got to meet him, that's a double envy lol
Tonithenightowl 11 months ago

Anyone with a voice that great can be confident. I'm confident he had more talent in his little toe than todays singers have in their entire body.

Great to see Gene on an old recording from Ready Steady Go, but did anyone spot the "pop singer" of the future in the crowd?
keithjude1 2 years ago
Gene Pitney songs always take me back to elementary school in Kokomo, Indiana. The only thing "bad" about this song is it's one of my favorites and you NEVER hear it on "oldies" radio. Like so many of Orbison's songs, also.

RIP Gene.
hajune 2 years ago
Gene was never underated, he had something like 25 records that reached the top ten and was loved by millions. His music died with Elvis's and Roy's with the British Invasion. He and Roy went there and had great success. We just missed it.

It's Ready Steady Go from 1964. The show was made by London-based Rediffusion which held the commercial TV franchise for the city until 1968. It was broadcast across the ITV network in the UK. Ready Steady Go was broadcast on Friday evenings.

Ha, ha. Gene was Strong, but it looked as though, for a few momemts there, the girls in the audience were going to be Stronger.
I love hearing him , or especially seeing this type of rare footage of him, or listening to any of the great songs he wrote for others.
Thanks so much for posting this.

I went to see him in concert the year before he died, first and only concert I've ever been to, can't remember if he sang this though, but just wanted to say it was a lovely night and made a huge difference in my life because I was suffering from bad depression and didn't find it easy leaving my house.
Love Gene Pitney! :)
