  • 16 DISLIKES!?

Wow.... must be 16 16 year olds who never had a childhood.

I feel terrible for the people that disliked this. For shame...

  • @0thers1d3 i must agree with you. this man was an incredible talent.

  • captivating every time - timeless song sung by a guy who had a ridiculous amount of real talent and stage presence - American Idol & others need to get off the air-they will never hold a candle to stuff like this, or even the great variety shows of the 60s & 70s,for that matter...thank you, zatara2000 and others on youtube for helping me to stay "back in the day" and have easy access to real music !

  • My Hero

  • I was surprised at the Gene Pitney - Rolling Stones connection.

  • luv gene pitney great vocal ability

  • This is from a late '64 edition of Ready Steady Go, a Friday-night pop tv show on Rediffusion TV, the London commercial tv station. Ground-breaking tv, with the audience and cameras vying for space in the studio. It was broadcast live at around 6:30pm from central London (Kingsway studios, long gone) and often had to be altered and cut whilst broadcasting. Absolutely of the time!

  • Looks like it was shot in the British Show READY STEADY GO. Seem to remember it.

    Fantastic !!!!

  • For the technology that they lacked back then, it makes one appreciate the talent he had. However, he should be very thankful that Cyndi Lauper wasn't around with her rendition of this song because his would have been known as a fair version in comparison.

  • What I loved about Gene Pitney was that he needed no fancy moves or gimmicks. He just stood there and used that marvellous voice of his. This man never made a bad record imo.

  • @FaerieCrone i agree with you 100%. do you think Britney would do this?? have a great day..

  • never get tired of hearing this beautiful song being sung by one of the best singers in the 60's

  • To all all the detractors, havn't heard anyone eles attempt to emulate Gene and the lung wrenching finale! Great singer and song

  • This was a man with an awesome voice... incredible emotional range.... What a fabulous entertainer... Miss those days!

  • I saw Gene many times in concert and he still had a wonderful voice. He is sorely missed.

  • Just found this on a program i use to download tunes etc and can confirm it as being on Ready, Steady Go

  • I think this was "READY STEADY GO" in London.

  • the show was ready steady go i recall seeing it rerun on tv kathy magowan now micheals balls partner introduced him

  • Oh someone go and get the big knife. This is a voice that rips your heart out. No one sounds like Pitney but Pitney. God knew what He was doing when He gave this voice to Gene.

  • this should be sung before all high school sporting events -- teach today's rap-blasting idiots some manners and class, and remind them that real music used to be composed.

  • I'll bet there is talent like this out there today,,but i dont have have enough time to search for it. there was no need to search for talent in the 60s. it was all around you. thank God for places like youtube. thanks for uploading this classic..

  • one of the greatest...ever!!!

  • Man oh man - how did he manage the ending of that song? The notes keep getting higher and higher and the power doesn't let up! Goosebumps! Thanks so much for posting this!

Wouldn't it have been great if we could have had the quartet of Gene, Jay Black (of Jay and the Americans), Roy Orbison and Tom Jones do this song together? Some might want to include Elvis too...

  • @rskissack make it 6 coz in my estimation you couldnt leave out the 70s 80s and 90s legend Freddy mercury who also had a great vocal range

  • you were the best! !!!

  • Thank you Gene, the best.....

  • i feel bad for the kids of today. instead of great talent like this, all they have are people like Britney, Lady Gaga and RAP. its sad...

  • They don't make them like they used to, how true.

  • One of the classic voices of all time. He was always so effortless. How lucky we were to have this man sing the songs he did. It was a great era. One of the truly great songs of all time.

  • One of the classic voices of all time. He was always so effortless. How lucky we were to have this man sing the songs he did. It was a great era

  • Oh someone just get me the big knife I am ready to die. This song is a true classic, Gene took it to a level unknown by any other artist. This is my favorite song of all time.

  • When I die I want to meet Gene in heaven and sing this song with him. Of course, I'll let him sing the final part.

  • I'm absolutely feeling this song right about now. :-( I love it

  • VERY, VERY, VERY, UNDERRATED AS A SINGER AND ENTERTAINER.

  • @ELPSTER1 You are absolutely right! Singers like that are not around anymore. This era had the true talent, such as Gene, The Righteous Brothers, Four Tops, ect, ect.

  • There is a REASON behind each song you love, it's the reason of memories of where you were when this song was out there!!

    THANKS

  • In the Spring of 1962 I went through Basic Training at Lackland AFB, Texas. One day we had to work KP. Gene Pitney was also going through Basic Training for the National Guard or Reserves at the time and we worked the same KP that day. If you ever worked KP in the military you know that you don't have much time to fool around. So I just got to shake Gene's hand and exchange greetings. Something I'll never forget.

  • This is actually an extraordinary song. Beyond Gene's amazing voice and phrasing, I believe this song is quite unique in its structure. Think about it. There's no chorus or verses. It simply builds its story towards a climax, which Gene delivers with power and mastery.

    Perhaps Pitney's greatest.

  • @geoff2204 Thanks for breaking that down... this song has always been my favorite song by him and you're right....it just keeps building and building until it reaches this great crechendo.....Wow, it takes your breath away... What a voice.

  • liberty valans

  • love this song

  • Could this have been "Ready Steady Go"

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY GENE, YOU'RE A ANGEL IN HEAVEN, AND YOU WERE A MASTERPIECE ON EARTH !! XOXO

  • If that ending doesn't bring goosebumps call a funeral director cus you are dead and don't know it. Gene's version of this is the best that ever was. Still gives me goosebumps after 47 yrs. The man was in a league of his own and unmatched.

  • Thankyou Dad wherever you are. Hope you are still listening with me buddy.

  • I just love is voice.

  • i dont think Justin B is Gene's replacement. in fact, i dont think Gene has one...thanks for posting this great song....

  • @JAYLEE169 Blimey, who suggested Justin as a replacement???

  • Wow-tremendous-could he have sung opera?

  • I think Gene Pitney was one of the greatest singers and very handsome too and very sexy in his time. And a great song

  • I think Gene Pitney was one of the greatest singers and very handsome too and very sexy in his time

  • he didn't flinch

  • This man has one of if not the best voice range of any male singer I have ever listened to. His songs are timeless and he is sorely missed in the world of music.

  • @mkennedy904 You might try checking out a young man named Declan Galbraith. He's from England. Start out by checking out his song Tell Me Why and from the up. Nothing Else Matters shows his wide range. He is the one singing from the beginning to the end.

  • @mkennedy904 And you would be right. I don't think there was ever a better tenor than Gene in my 58 yrs. This is the song that hooked me at 13 and he's been my favorite male singer since. He left a great legacy of wonderful music, with a voice that was truly unique and beyond compare.

  • This man has one of if not the best voice range of any male singer I have ever listened to. His songs are timeless and he is sorely missed in the world of music.

  • esta es para oky

  • i love and hate this song at the same time...the opening line..."Ican see your slipping away from me" reminds me of my mums passing in ;87, and time does not always mak things easier. However thi really is a beautiful song thanks for the posting x

  • I have never heard this song done justice by anyone other than Pitney. He stands alone on this song.

  • @Tonithenightowl I agree Gene Pitney was one of a kind fantastic voice

  • @madelaine5021 Glad you agree, I just find it hard to believe there were not a ton of covers of this great song. Had to be because it was very hard to sing. It's a tenor's song but I have never heard anyone but Cindy Lauper try to sing it. Thanks for responding and Happy Holidays

  • I seen A canadian,,boy do this song in windsor ontario.............absolutely floored the audience the power in this guys voice (Andy Probyn),,,,was unbeliveable,,,,a standing ovation,,,,incredible,,,,check him out,,,,awesome voice

  • Think Scott Walker took some tips from Gene Pitney?

  • RIP, Gene. A fan from the 60s I saw Gene live at St George`s Hall, Bradford, just three days before he died. A distinct, unique voice, fabulous talent.

  • Now You're up there with him Mum R.I.P

  • Gene the Prince, Elvis the King. God rest their wonderful souls.

  • did anyone notice gary glitter in the crowd???

  • @zatara2000... this was probably "Ready Steady Go."

  • @licencedtospill This was undoubtedly Britain's 'Ready Steady Go' - there's another (longer) clip on here where you can see Cathy Mcgowan at the beginning.

  • What a set of pipes! Gene's stuff is in a class of it's own.

  • LOVE YA gENE

  • Just a beautiful voice

  • One of my favorite songs, but I didn't care for this video. Would have been much better to sing it without the crowd hanging on him.

    Thanks for the video

  • @dskap201

    my sentiments exactly

  • Gosh I wish I had been there, he was AMAZING! RIP your fans will always love and remember you.

  • Please Check Out My Personal Tribute To Gene Pitney Your Opinion Counts Check

    leondale2003

  • But did you know the high note was dubbed ???? allegedly

  • Yep! Its going to be one of them times soon....getting my heart broken once again, but you know what?! Like the great Gene Pitney says "I'm Gonna Be Strong" and thats what I'm gonna try or do, no matter how much it hurts, and I'm sure with a great song like this I'm definitely gonna be strong! Thanks Gene.. God Bless xxxx

  • 0:59 - a big, juicy cockroach fell onto Gene's shoulder and that nice girl just plucked it from his suit then gobbled it up - mmm, yum!

  • Yeah Gene never got enough credit. Also a fine songwriter producer and musical innovator (he introduced the cow bell...nah).

  • i saw him when i was 17, 100 years ago. he was phenomonal

  • One of the standout endings to a song, ever. To me, better than Roy Orbison's Crying.

  • @Ricbir1 i gotta agree ric. his range is effortless and he does st use a falsetto. they don t make them like Roy , Gene , or Del anymore. todays music is garbage with singers although a few exceptions cant sing without electronic help and songs are meaningless.

  • @ironrick46 could not agree more saw Del Shannon back in early seventies twice in one night with only an organist &drummer backing him at both venues and he sounded absolutely brilliant

  • @Ricbir1 True, but not quite as good as Roy Orbison's Running Scared...

  • CT's finest. Great ending to this song.

  • What a talent - what a classic!

689321546 is absolutely right, as is tedone2!

    Thanks for posting this masterpiece!

  • I had the privilage of seeing Gene perform in a club called Blighty's, back in Bolton, in the 70's. I went to see 6 shows in the same week, and had a drink with him after. My favourite singer of all time. A true gentleman. Sadly missed.

  • Quite possibly my favorite song of the rock era- I doubt that any of the best soul singers could have done as good a job as Gene did on this song

  • Gene was so friendly. We emailed back and forth for a year. He arranged two free tickets for my son who was living in London when he gave a concert there. So down to earth and an amazing voice.

  • @kevintyn What a beautiful story. Heard he was a very nice man. Never heard a negative thing said about him. He is so missed. He is part of my youth and stayed there for a lifetime. The man was pure genius. You would never mistake his voice for someone else's. He stood alone.

  • I don't know if anybody has answered yet but I used to have this on a Ready Steady Go! video. RSG was from England.

  • Ohhhhhhhh...how we miss our Gene.....truly one of a kind talent....that lasted right to the very end of his life........yes, I like Cyndi Pauper's version...but for different reasons...but for me...there is one, and only one Gene Pitney

  • In the 60s, you could write and arrange songs that could push the envelope melody wise. The ending is spectacular.

  • I love Gene Pitney, my uncle used to write songs for him.

  • I could listen to this over and over! Thanks for posting.

  • Marc Almond came late in Gene's life; better late than never. RIP Gene. Singular and wonderful.

  • I was 13 when this song came out and it still stands as my favorite. I never heard anyone do an ending like this before or since. His voice could not be recreated. It was one of a kind. God only handed out this voice to Gene. The rest trying to do his music are just wanna be's. RIP to the greatest voice in my lifetime.

  • The 'European music show' is Britain's 'Ready Steady Go' - the year, 1964. The gal who throws her arms around him at the end seems like the same girl who follows him down the walkway (directly behind him).

  • Not sure if anyone else has written this, but Cyndi Lauper does a truly exceptional cover of this song. Gene is great. Don't get me wrong. But Cyn does this song justice, for sure.

  • What a great song & voice. ////////what is he doing now?

  • He died in Europe a couple years ago.

  • @secretsam215 . 4 years ago

  • Graght ,

  • Gene's sister Shirley was the one who died.

  • I met Gene when I was eleven and had the privilege of sitting in to watch his concert rehearsal from the stage wings - and again the following year. It was marvellous to be able to go to watch him again at a concert in the UK, over forty years later. He remains one of my favourite singers. THe final notes in this song are awesome.

  • Love this song & love this man, I had the honour of meeting & talking with him when I was 16 & I was totally awestruck. He was a perfect gentleman. Saw him twice in concert years later and boy could he still belt out those hits!! What a sad day for music when he passed away.

Mecca is a really good song too!! :D

  • @tworedballoons ok you are another one I envy, what a wonderful memory. I never got to see him in person, and it's one of the things I regret big time. You got to meet him, that's a double envy lol

  • @tworedballoons Wow, that's such a cool memory to have. I always thought he would've been a really sweet guy. Glad to know he was... This song is amazing and this concert video is the best. I especially love that girl who was so awestruck by him and she grabbed him to hug him at the end...

  • What a voice - wow he was fantastic - saw him live and he was just as good if not better. Will go on for ever - miss yoi Gene

  • One of my all-time favorite voices. Unique and singular in every way---always gives me the chills. RIP Gene.

  • OMG- can he hold a note! RIP Gene- you gave me a great deal of joy in my teenage years.

  • Gene Pitney was just so fantastic a singer (and a good writer too). He utilized his Italian background via some of the musical instruments. What a town with pity and how a world without Pitney .. but I've got to be strong and let him go his way. RIP.

  • Your sister has joined you up in heaven now, may you now both rest in peace together in heaven.....the name Pitney will live on forever ! Francy.

  • @FRANCYWILLOW

Hi Francy, can u tell me which sister has passed over, and when,i know Gene had two sisters.

    Thank you.

  • the angels in heaven have another voice to sing with

  • What a powerhouse voice! They don't make 'em like that anymore! R.I.P. Mr. Pitney!

  • He was great....I love the music,

  • the tv programme this comes from looks

like READY STEADY GO, it uses MANFRED MANN song 5-4-3-2-1 as the theme

  • THE BEST

  • Comment removed

  • Gene Pitney! If i was standing that close to the stage, i may not have kept my composure.

  • Oh Happy Birthday dear Gene, thank you for sharing yourself with the world, heaven is so lucky to have you now ! Francy,

  • Happy birthday Gene.

  • Happy 70th birthday in heaven Gene.

  • His body language is just magnificent. A strong jaw. Did you see how some gal just throws her arms around him at the last second ? Chick dig that moody stuff.

  • One of the REAL talents, as were so many during that era. Shame you don't hear this on the radio (agree, werbeone). i like upbeat version by Bill Medley, and great version by Cindi Lauper, but this is truly a special treat and I play this often. Thank you for posting!

  • Anyone with a voice that great can be confident. I'm confident he had more talent in his little toe than todays singers have in their entire body.

  • you are correct sir

  • confident young chap

  • spotted gary glitter ages ago... hoped no one else saw ...........

  • Iv'e decided Gene Pitney is my all time favorite singer

  • Great to see Gene on an old recording from Ready Steady Go, but did anyone spot the "pop singer" of the future in the crowd?

  • Gene Pitney songs always take me back to elementary school in Kokomo, Indiana. The only thing "bad" about this song is it's one of my favorites and you NEVER hear it on "oldies" radio. Like so many of Orbison's songs, also.

  • The girls who dressed black had fallowed him fanatically , no wander she love his voice, the some way I do!!!! How much we are missing you Gene!!!! Wow! !!!!! Juan Arica Chile

  • I love this!!!!

  • Gene was a life guard when younger and practiced going under water for long periods of time. As much as 5 minutes. I traveled with a band in the 60's and talked with him. He never tired of talking music technique. He was uncomproming when performing and the Background music was as much the same as original recordings . He was a perfectionist . We tried to write some music for him. It did not work out. Had I met him later on we had a couple songs that would have been Pitney type songs. RIP Gene.

  • Gene was never underated, he had something like 25 records that reached the top ten and was loved by millions. His music died with Elvis's and Roy's with the British Invasion. He and Roy went there and had great success. We just missed it.

  • Loved, loved, loved Gene Pitney!! He was amazing!! A load of talent, but very underrated! Miss you, Gene!

  • This really displays his vocal talent and range. Try singing it and you will see.

  • Actually, I sang this song a lot in the 60's, I had great falsetto back then but, there's only one Gene Pitney! Excuse me, I must go and finish building my time machine.

  • @Tedone2

Well said. He holds that last note forever.

  • Comment removed

  • @Tedone2 i did once and found it hard to reach the high note at the end but just managed lol xx

  • Say's it all,but im not that strong

  • The man invented blue eyed soul!

  • It's Ready Steady Go from 1964. The show was made by London-based Rediffusion which held the commercial TV franchise for the city until 1968. It was broadcast across the ITV network in the UK. Ready Steady Go was broadcast on Friday evenings.

  • Top of the pops England ? Not sure of year!!

  • Ha, ha. Gene was Strong, but it looked as though, for a few momemts there, the girls in the audience were going to be Stronger.

I love hearing him , or especially seeing this type of rare footage of him, or listening to any of the great songs he wrote for others.

Thanks so much for posting this.

  • @1tabt do you think some of the girls were going to take it like a man as well

  • Amazing!

  • I went to see him in concert the year before he died, first and only concert I've ever been to, can't remember if he sang this though, but just wanted to say it was a lovely night and made a huge difference in my life because I was suffering from bad depression and didn't find it easy leaving my house.

    Love Gene Pitney! :)

  • GraceUnderPressure1...I also..started recently to feel very depressed!..Hard to get out of bed..drive 15 miles to get a newspaper....Hard, like you to leave the home..I really do NOT know why I am getting like this..but, anyway..just want to THANK you for this post......RIC!!

  • Love his voice

  • gene never got the credit he really deserved , great song writer wrote hundreds of songs and man could he sing those balets

  • @689321546

    Agree.

  • @689321546 It's too bad Gene didn't get the airplay here in the states like he did in the United Kingdom. He truly was a great talented singer!

  • One of my very fave songs by Gene. I would love it if they made a movie about him. Tryouts for anyone who could cover his songs would be really interesting!

  • Great song by an often overlooked talent as a songwriter, producer, and singer . RIP

  • Schlechte Qualität!

  • Such a powerful voice....

    Amazing!!!!

  • I thought Gene Pitney had such an unusual voice, gosh what a range, Saw him in concert, it was just awesome. They just don't have music today like that

  • I like Cyndi Lauper, but I don't like her version of the song. I like the original because it's much more dramatic.

  • Love this video it brings back such sweet memories. Young Gene in black and white, what more could I ask for.

  • this scarybug has old bug sister that loves this pitney bug.

  • Awesome voice. I saw him live once and he sounded just just as great as he did in the sixties

  • I agree. I was a littlekid in the 60s and grew up listening to him. Saw him live twice, 10 years apart - fantastic show, amazing voice, lovely man.Such a shame he was far from his family when he passed. x

  • AMAZING!

  • This looks to me like it is from Ready Steady Go in the uk. One of the songs Dave Clarke isn't controlling!

  • Amazing...just amazing....Gene, Roy Orbison & Jay Black....no comparison out there today.....

  • couldn't agree more-Gene, Roy and Jay Black have brought me years of enjoyment-I knew them when they first started out-I was a luck man

  • Oldies fucking RULE!

Gene's truly one of the best!

  • I never hear his stuff anymore. Why has he been forgotten? He was absolutely one of the best who we clearly do not have a match for today. Glad I was a teen in the 60's - when there was real talent out there to entertain us..
