I got on the metro today and the announcements (Prochaine station) was exacly like this, and at Henri-Bourassa, on the screen, it was written Merci d'avoir voyage avec la STCUM instead of STM!
Just a note, the terminus is now Montmorency since 2007.
First time I went to Montreal was 2008 and I thought this was new "Cutting edge technology"...Didn't know it was so old. Light years ahead of other transit systems in North America *cough* TTC *cough*.
"oui, it etait neuf et suelemont sur quelque trains." oui, il était neuf et seulement sur quelques trains. -- with a right spelling Oui, c'était nouveau et seulement sur quelques trains. -- grammatically correct
If you have some questions, please send me a message.
Keep in mind, this was first installed circa 1994 (15 years ago). It was pretty cool at the time. The color selection wasn't based on technology. The display had to be readable by color-blind people.
However, I'm sure a 2010 edition of such a system would be of much better quality. And you could limit the use of color-blind-safe colors to travel info only.
Si t'as cliqué dessus c'est que ca t'intéressait!...
Hehe, here's another comment about this being old: the train stations! Gare Windsor...sadly it's not used anymore for trains. There's also not that many commuter lines compared with today!
here in London our buses are only just getting passenger information systems announcing the next stops, and only some trains announce the next station.
This brings back great memories of what it used to look like. I was wondering if you had any video of the animated sun or moon doing the weather report? That was hilarious and really fun to watch. I remember it was an animation used shortly after Telecite was created, until around 2000, then came back for a few months in 2003, but now is replaced with stupid text only bland reports.
sorry I am not sure if I have - and right now I cant even watch my videos to find out, as my video machine has gone wrong... I filmed these in S-VHS format and video machines for this format are no longer made, so I cant buy a new one!
MysticMTL : I also LOVED the animations before the news, sports, and weather segments. When I'd get home from college (back in 1998) in the evening, I'd see the animation of the moon booting out the sun and making itself confortable on the cloud right before the weather reports.
I should mark this as spam, or even delete it, but having seen an older message which makes adverse comments between people from France and Quebec, so I am leaving it here. Otherwise I'd have to remove several messages en masse.
Only on the orange, blue and yellow line, has the screen display, but in the green line, has no screen display, but says only example: ''Prochaine Station: Berri-UQAM'', i wish to have it on the green line because you get to see the time the day, and some store specials.
No idea, but I do know the green line uses the original (though restored by CN) trains so perhaps it's simply not possible. Since they got new wagons for the orange, maybe they could use the old ones there, which already had the system on them, who knows...
I recently came back from visiting Montreal and by comparing the voice calling out the next station in the video back then and comparing the one today, you can see there's a slight change in voice in my humble opinion. Other than that, it's a cool system.
maybe they now use a different person making the announcements? maybe also the 'tone' of the lady's voice has been changed by the multiple edits of the video recording & conversion by youtube into a low quality mono sound.
The display on Telecité has since changed; We still see the sliding STM logo, but:
The Station name appears at the top of the display. At the bottom, the list of buses appear sliding from right to left, starting with the regular bus lines (appearing in orange), then rush hour buses (appearing in right) or night buses (appearing in green)
"We had this equipment on 2 buses several years ago. This was a test for the supplier that never came back to pick up it merchandise. As this equipment were not functionnal, we withdrewed them.
This is not in our project to install such equipment in our buses.
Yes I have other footage, but cannot digitise anything at present as I am trying to get through some work related exams, so that I can get a better paid job and afford to go back to Canada. Hopefully I will have passed the exams by July.
One more thing, do you happen to have the first 30-45 seconds BEFORE this video starts? I wanted to see the Clairol commercial which, if I remember correctly, showed two girls riding a rollercoaster, one with the Clairol hairspray, one without... LOL
Did I reply? I thought I did - the video which was encoded starts partway through this advert. It is possible that sequence on the master tape began earlier, but I do not know.
Thank you so so much for posting this!!! It reminds me of the first time I took the metro and the screens had just been installed. I was what... 11 years old and incredibly excited! THANKS!!!
yea, I filmed that in 1993; only some trains had that type of information display - either it was still experimental at the time or had only just started to be installed throughout the system.
For the day it was very advanced, and in many ways still is.
I'm in London (England) and even today our underground trains dont have anything like this!
Only the Orange line trains (and possibly Blue line?) had those boards. They were quite useful in killing boredom ;) - something to lay your eyes on in a boring ride, but not that useful in telling you where to get off - I'd rely on the spoken messages instead (if available).

I try not forget my book before I leave for the metro, otherwise those horrible displays are the only source of reading material on my way to work.
Who is the genius at STCUM who said let's hang a Lite-Brite techology monitor and let's display some redundant and useless infos?

I should have paced my comment but this type of technology is quite contrasting in this HD era.
On the other hand, if the cost of a new technology in 2010 should reflect on the price of my pass I'd prefer to keep the Lite-Brites!

The cool french-style voice announcing the stations also changed in 2003 for a more Quebec-style slang. I miss that voice.

tarekdelgadodib1986 4 years ago
maybe there is a reason for this - different types of train perhaps? or that they plan to put new trains on this line soon?
(or they just ran out money to pay for this system on the trains on this last line???)
Simon

No idea, but I do know the green line uses the original (though restored by CN) trains so perhaps it's simply not possible. Since they got new wagons for the orange, maybe they could use the old ones there, which already had the system on them, who knows...
