She sure was. From the time artists were either good or not, talentful or not, charismatic or not. No "special arrangements", no visual & sound effect, no corrective edition between. Most of us take live national TV broadcasts for granted today, and virtually everyone isn't aware of the fact that, in the late '40s (with network TV in its infancy), about half of the United States could see a live telecast originating from one side of the country {the Midwest was the "boundary line"}....and there weren't that many stations, independent or network affiliates, on the air, either!

The reason this was not seen "live", coast-to-coast, was because the coaxial cable that enabled live television to be seen simultaneously on East and West Coasts was not completed until September 1951. Until then, live shows originating from the West (or East) had to "kinnied" and mailed to affiliates on the opposite side of the U.S., usually telecast as long as six weeks after the original broadcast, depending on when the local station got the film...

Ed's show {and every other "live" TV show} was "kinescoped" [16mm filmed copy from a "live" monitor] because there was no "coaxial cable" to broadcast live TV shows "coast-to-coast" at the time; that didn't happen until September 1951. "Kinnies" were the only way most people got to see an "East Coast" series on the "West Coast", and vice versa (the "dividing line" was the Midwest). There were some affiliates that couldn't telecast "live", so those were used for delayed broadcasts, as well.

The big deal was the presence of nazi alliances mixed with the elite in Brazil who got annoyed by Carmen's sympathy for Americans in the early 40's (and ever more). They established a campaign against her using their influence in the Brazilian media. The rest of the population always loved her. As they always will. There has never been a reason not to love her lavish charisma. Thanks.
