I use Vista regularly at work (unfortunately), a Vista rip-off KDE 4.0 is not. It is superior in every way. As far as OS X goes, the arguments over who innovated what first will go on for years. But the similarities are shallow ones. KDE 4.0 is a different beast from the Mac desktop and overall, better IMHO. And it is worth pointing out how much open source software Apple have used to make OS X and Safari possible in the first place.
All desktops borrow from each other! If one gets a cool new feature why can't the other desktops adopt it as well. So ripping off is not the problem, doing it badly and not adding anything original is. KDE 4 borrows very well and adds tonnes of cool new features.
Ive installed kde4 today on a Kubuntu 8.04 Machine. I was really looking forward for this release but its pretty unusable right now, it frequently crashes and the only way to recover is to remove the .kde4 folder in your home folder. By the way none of the effects works with my ATI Card using a fglrx driver. I realy hope things getting better 4.0.1!
I installed on the day of the 4.0 release and yes, as we were warned, this was the 'will eat your children' release. But every week since release I see new improvements. Its getting better every week. And this is great to witness. I'm using Kubuntu 7.10 and though there are glitches and things it has become my default desktop. Incidentally I was playing with a new mac the other day and I was actually disappointed by it and was happy to get back to my 'better every week' KDE 4.0 desktop.
ive tried kde 4 rc live cd. this is probalry the worst kde release. it havent got desktop icons it uses widgets as desktop icons << i hate this. i cant make taskbar smaller. it have got so much bugs and im sure that all of them will not be fixed in final release. u need to wait 4.0.5 or somethink. actually im kde lover but this product is...with no words. i will back to 3.5 it is much better than 4.0. i will be better use gnome but not kde 4. thats my opinion of kde 4.
omg kde 4 is most beatiful gui i have ever seen. the icons are really too big and taskbar, because i use it an 1024*768 resolution, but this is not a problem, u can always make it smaller. i think gnome is real shit vs kde.
Nice! Not sure I like that thing in the upper right hand corner of the desktop though... It wouldn't be so bad if it were customizable, but from the screenshots and videos I have seen, it looks out of place and does not match the theme of the desktop or window decorations. I am not sure if I like the wrench sitting on top of it either. Maybe they are not done with it yet... I just hope that I can skin it, (re)move it, and/or make it transparent. Is it grey?
KDE4 is just plain sexy, I can't wait to unleash this bad boy on my main desktop in December. As someone noted, the taskbar keeps changing, whats the default? Also, Whats the start menu for default, that ugly slab menu or raptor? Slab is the ugliest, bulky, user-unfriendly thing ever. :D
The taskbar just gets bigger and bigger every time I see an update. I wouldn't care much if the thing was transparent but now its just a giant black bar taking up screen real estate.
The screencast is at LOW RESOLUTION, thats why its big. I'm really sick of reading the same braindead comments from people who are that damn clueless I wonder how they even figure out how to post a comment in the first place.
Looks like they didn't change the ugly kmilo volume display :( Would be great if they replaced it with with something smaller and maybe translucent - and NOT in the middle of the screen.
"The usability seems horrible": Why ? Something more constructive please.
"The icons are so large, so you can only see 6 icons at a time": The screencast at a low resolution for a reason.
"The titlebar doesn't have a color, so it just looks dumb, and you can't differ between active and inactive windows": You mean it looks a bit like a Mac ? In RC2 you can see inactive window titles fade and become translucent. Also its customizable anyway, as KDE has always been.
It's dumb to try and do a screencast demo with a high resolution. If he did it at 1280x1024, everything would be so small it would be unreadable. I've done a bunch of inkscape screencasts and we limit them to 800x600 just for this reason. Youtube's encoding quality just sucks too btw.
Looks shiny. The prospect of fully interactive desktops is exciting. The desktop can finally be more than a space that irritates me when it gets cluttered.
KDE 4 is shaping up to be really awesome. Not only does it look gorgeous it also has a lot of nice usable ideas. I love the clear text buttons in text input fields for example. And this Plasma design looks very well thought out. By the way, does anyone know if it will be possible to set a containment in such a way that windows would not be allowed to overlap it?
i am by default a minimalist when it comes to the desktop environment... but KDE4 is really whetting my appetite and i'm really looking forward to the first stable release!
Oh it is like pause in a video game instead of a traditional desktop. Cool

KDE does it better, for free.
I usually use GNOME because I hate Qt, but... KDE 4 is almost worth the knowledge that I'm using software written with it.

these dolphin and other animation effects <- does they need opengl and quite good video card or it works without any drivers?
ubuntu704feistyfawn 4 years ago
Many of the effects need OpenGL. But just about any old graphics card will do. You can still have effects without OpenGL but just not as cool.

I'm fade up with the gnome vs kde war and the shitty comments...
Stop make critizm between the two project, choose you desktop environment and do not say fuck kde or fuck gnome...
The free choice is the open source force...

The thing on the top right corner I remember reading somewhere that exists just to facilitate testing. It won't be there for the final release.

The usability seems horrible.
The icons are so large, so you can only see 6 icons at a time.
The titlebar doesn't have a color, so it just looks dumb, and you cant differ between active and inactive windows.

macs fade out inactive windows, they always have.
HaniiPuppy 4 years ago
I'd dispute the "always have" part, but how is this a usability issue ?
CerebralGump 4 years ago
well even when they first came out, the back-ground windows lost the buttons on the menu-bar until they came into the foreground again

I like gnome better, less clutter. What screen resolution does he have, look at that bar size, looks 640x480!!!
