Thanks man. You used a track that exhibits Trumpet and not Sax as Sax was never the true voice of Noir until the 1980's. I just finished a neo noir short and used these old films as inspiration.
Can Someone Please thell me every single film that was used in this video. ive got some of them already but i would like my collection to grow if you tell me you will be doing a big favour and i thank you.
Royalefreshness, you may have gotten your answers already. This is what I've come up with: Audrey Totter, "Casablanca" "The Big Heat" "The Big Sleep" "The Big Combo" (fog filled screen cap), "Double Indemnity" "Out of the Past" "Touch of Evil" with Heston and Janet Leigh, the incredible Rita Hayworth, the smolderingly sexy brunette: ELLA RAINES (my personal fave); Gene Tierney, "Dark at the Top of the Stairs" and I think Mitchum & Russell in "His Kind of Woman." I hope this is of some help 2 u.
1952Capricorn1, thank you it is a big help. thanks. ive got alot of the films you hav mentioned. There all classics. i really need to see touch of evil
Bogey!!! love it. Noir is the best form of art, to me at least. Would love it if you checked out a neo noir film we did. It was shot entirely on greenscreen.. called "Shadow of Lies."
I second the recommendation for getting the Miles Davis soundtrack to the movie "Elevator to the Gallows (Ascenseur pour l'échafaud)". The movie is also a classic movie on its own.
My top-10 favorite Film Noirs: 1. Out of the Past - Jacques Tourneur 2. Nightmare Alley - Edmund Goulding 3. The Set-Up - Robert Wise 4. Sunset Boulevard - Billy Wilder 5. Champion - Mark Robson 6. Moonrise - Frank Borzage 7. The Killing - Stanley Kubrick 8. The Prowler - Joseph Losey 9. White Heat - Raoul Walsh 10. Phantom Lady - Robert Siodmak
The name of the song is Nuit Sur Les Champs-Elysees from the french noir film, "Ascenseur Pour L'echafaud." I highly recommend buying the soundtrack if you like this kind of jazz.

I mean, let's face it- the hidden secret to the world is that Rick actually DID care enough for Ilsa to kill for her, even though he acted as though he probably could have let her die. He could have let the Nazis have Vic Laszlo- may even have been tempted. Hey it's harder to be a 'Dark' figure when youre surrounded by Nazis (they were the Sith lords of their day) and when there's a love interest, but Bogart pulled it off.
I think Casablanca sort of sneaks in the back door of noir. Rick is desperately disillusioned with his former patriotism (or at least idealism) only to play reluctant hero for the love of a woman he will never have. At the end, he embraces his prior ideals at a heavy cost (his love for a second time and his comfortable life of non-involvement) and walks off to war.
I didnt like Chinatown. A Nero Wolfe Mystery is a great tv show. I would recommend it to people who like the type of thing, albeit its in colour with a lovely style. Nice music.
Oh my God, for the last time, CASABLANCA is NOT a film noir! Deep contrast and Humphrey Bogart doesn't automatically make the film any darker than a true noir.
Other than that, great song; Elevator to the Gallows...now *that*'s noir.
The camera work might not be 'classic' film noir but the writing and direction is. Just because you think Casablanca isn't Film Noir doesn't make it so.Maybe the vast majority rules in this case. Live with it.
Well the themes of Film Noir really IMHO don't apply to Casablanca, I mean there's no femme fatale, It has an ending that's more upbeat than most Film Noirs, Film Noir always has darkness, hidden secrets and corruption and betrayal and Casablanca with its themes of patriotism and idealism and fighting the good fight is different than Film Noir at least IMHO, I'm not saying Casablanca isn't a great film just not a Film Noir in the same sense that The Maltese Falcon
@cha5 Film Noir is not limited to sub themes and happenings like that though mate, its primary the discovery of shadows and the use of semi crushed blacks in the scope of the picture. With the not exact translation of film noir being "dark film". You can have any themes in relation to this e.g. blade runner which was sci-fi is one of the best cases of neo modern film noir and thats in colour too :).
@rickwoodartist Interesting, it reminds me about a discussion I had with someone on the IMDB a few years back trying to link German Expressionist films like 'The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari' not to mention 'M' and the Dr Mabuse films of Fritz Lang and some other films as a sort of precursor to Film Noir.
@cha5 please in no way think im trying to prove you are wrong. Film is an art form by artists, art is interpretation. Its good to read other peoples views on matters. That sounds really interesting, i agree with you there must be a link of influence between them. I must do more research i think to keep up with you =)
@cha5 what about Pickup on South Street? It has the same patriotic ideals you described, yet it seems to come in a film noir package. I love the movie and never quite lumped it in with the more standard film noirs, but it does use the same formula.
@Daemonocracy I'd say Pickup on South Street has a bit more cynicism towards patriotism and even especially towards the McCarthy era communist witch hunt mentality, which IMO director Sam Fuller had little sympathy for, and I always remember Richard Widmark contemptuous remark when they try to use patriotism as an argument
"Are you trying to appeal to me with the flag?!?"
for me at least Fuller seemed to treat the "better dead than red" mindset as something of a cynical joke.
@Daemonocracy Even though Thelma Ritter really come to the decision that "I just can't stand communists" (which costs her her life) the communists in Pickup on South Street are about as incompetant and corrupt as the patriotic officials trying to hunt them down and recover the microfilm. For me what really motivates Widmark to finally "do the right thing" at the end is Thelma Ritter's death, and not patriotism.
@cha5 Interesting analysis, but I think it was a combination of both. He was a low life, contributed nothing to society, yet redeems himself in the end for a greater cause and someone he cared about. The cynicism seemed to be leveled at the establishment and yes, the Red Scare at the time, but as far as individual contribution is concerned, he held that type of patriotism in high regard. Just the way i see it, either way I love that movie.
@Daemonocracy It's really a great film isn't it? It's really been forever since I've seen that film, I hope Criterion will release it on Blu-ray some time soon.
The "vast majority" of major film historians wouldn't think Casablanca was a film noir either--the film is too rooted in a raison d'etre of patriotism to compete with the dark shadows of something like DOUBLE INDEMNITY or IN A LONELY PLACE.
The music is by Miles Davis. It was written as a sound track for a Louis Malle film starring {I think) Jeanne Moreau called something like Elevator (I don't know the rest of the title). There is a soundtrack of this film score by Miles available on CD.
"Elevator to the Gallows". It's one of the greatest films ever. It was Malle's first, and the film that made Moreau a star. The soundtrack is so suave and cool.
yea.. i know.. but I think we will still see it in modern movies.. like Sin City.. I thought it was an awesome movie where the lighting was soo beautiful there. Ohh and all the Saw movies.. Im pretty sure its film noir style.. LOL.. sooorry! :)
