Original, great melody, fantastic shredding. Gilbert isn't just fast for fast's sake, it goes somewhere. SFBADR and Fuzz Universe are two iconic albums. Gilbert should be made a national treasure. And I'm sure his best is yet to come.
@FifatlasHD Suuuuurrre, EVERYONE was sitting their with their cameras out. Unless you were there. or you can see peoples faces from the stage. which means probably means you have super powers as all i can see are the backs of peoples heads in this entire video. You dont have a clue. just like the rest of us.
@FinalFreedomEclipse wow again with the ALL comment, look, the place wouldnt have been packed with people to watch just anyone with a guitar. also, this is in 2008, Paul Gilbert was very well known in 2008, its likely that the vast majority know who he is.
@FifatlasHD Again...see my previous comment. I know who Paul Gibert is, YOU know who paul Gilbert is and Chappers knows who paul guilbert is, as for being packed. It looks like he played a small venue. that doesnt mean everyone there knew who Paul Gibert was. It could have been an add in a local paper that drew everyone in "amazing man on guitar" people are very clever at marketting things these days
@FifatlasHD actually. ever heard of the term "Free Cake" ??? Maybe everyone was there for the free cake. and it just so happens Mr P. Gilbert was passing by an decided to play to all the people while they munched on cake. It could happen. At the same time it explains why people were glued to the seat like manikins -- BUT YOU DONT KNOW THAT! BECAUSE YOU WERENT THERE! People still coulda shown a little more emotion and got into the groove of it
His vibrato is absolutely perfect. In my opinion, you can shred all you want but vibrato is the difference between being able to play and being ABLE to play.
I hate shredders. In my opinion it's all about speed and completely void of soul. But, Paul Gilbert is a shredder who puts loads of feeling into his playing. VERY few shredders can pull this off. I'd say Paul and Yngwie are the only players who can shred with soul.
@murfdog19 Yngwie? Really? I fail to see how anyone can say they hate shred, then say they like Yngwie, a prime example of the arid kind of shred purely reliant on a a form of egotistical wankery that has barely changed since the mid eighties. Paul Gilbert, Joe Satriani, Andy Timmons and Guthrie Govan (among others) are the players that have advanced this genre by incorporating elements of blues and jazz.
I agree with you though, in essence. Shred, in its purest form, is horrible.
@DrSalvador15 Yes, but Yngwie's prime was in the mid eighties. The eighties were filled with lifeless shredders, but in that time Yngwie was a little different from the others. He is influenced by classical composers; which is a cliche now, but somewhat original in the eighties.
Notice how Paul has a deep love and commitment to each and every note he plays. Each note is like a child of his, and he makes sure he gives each one enough attention. No notes left behind, each one is a masterpiece.

so maybe your head made it up. and i never called anyone out. i just said its all vintege modern in this concert. so wtf?
maybe he used one once i dunno, just saying he dident here...
You can tell simply by the faceplate that this head is not a Vintage Modern. If you look closely as well, you can see a Vintage Modern stack directly beside the RR Head. Why would PG have 2 stacks running at the same time for a small show like this, especially 2 of the same. It's clearly a RR Head.
Rob, you'll get there! Just keep practicing and you could be shredding next to him someday! Paul is very lucky he was born with monsters to do those painful stretches, especially for the diminished string skipping sections
Does anybody have a clue how his amp is set? I just bought a vintage modern head and I think this is one of the better sounds that I have heard out of it...

It's probably mostly composed of metalheads who are only watching thinking about how they can get better than Paul Gilbert - or already are, of course:P
That makes sense, but it's a very well-founded stereotype, unfortunately:S (Paul Gilbert actually being one of the notable exceptions.) I'm guessing there's just a little too much fake testosterone floating around in the one genre to leave much room for nice guys - everybody's too busy trying to be THE BEST and/or prove how incredibly ANGRY they are at... whatever it is they're angry always angry at:P lol
@yobhsiFehT I agree theres a lot of that insecure hypermasculinity bullshit surrounding guitar players. I almost can smell it whenever I walk into a guitar center or find some guys to jam with... It makes me not even want to play with anyone else because they're generally asshats trying too hard to one-up you. In the back of my mind I'm saying "dude come the fuck on, lets just make music!" Less ego and more creative expression! I love Paul in that he never has that egomaniacal posture in playing
i feel so so much better about the arpeggio part knowing that its even a challenge for PG. it must be the only thing EVER that he cant play with one hand, blindfolded, upsidedown, and in a coma
I think I remember reading somewhere that in the album recording of this song the arpeggios were actually put together piece by piece by a audio engineer. It wasn't until after the album was released and right before a live performance that Paul learned to play the whole part.
Interesting glimpse of what it's like to be a BUSY musician!
It turns out he is NOT playing through the white Marshall stack in the back. He's playing though a VIntage Modern combo on the floor to his right. I saw a picture of this performance from the right side and you can clearly see the combo from there.
