OMG. I could listen to this all day. It's the quality of his voice-- not the technique necessarily though he's good -- and he has his whole life to work on that-- but its the tone, the sound of the voice and his passion and emotion. I'd go to his concert tomorrow.

Adam strained his vocal to do this song, and he's got the vocal of a stage performer/broadway star. James is just a natural rock singer....he belted but there's really no straining the vocal.

@megustaverlas What strain? Nonsense. Just to be sure, I asked 2 opera experts (professional singers & teachers) to evaluate both Adam's and James' performances of this song. Adam never broke a sweat nor did he overreach, unlike James, who can sound less than pleasant at the top of the register. They also said James had better be careful or he's going to ruin his voice before its time. Nonetheless, James is an excellent singer & performer and is rising above this year's competition.

@Tianguo2012 I don't know who you asked but I respect that because I'm not a pro. You have to take into account that they're two diff. types. Adam sounds more broadway than heavy-metal rock and he seems to have been trained that way, where James who's done a few musicals but seems to have been trained to rock. I watched back the performance to check if there's any vocal strain, Adam sings correctly for musical theatre except when he gets screamy it's not that effortless. BTW, I'm a fan of both.

@megustaverlas I'm a fan of both, too, and I hope that James goes all the way to take the AI 10 crown. He has star quality the others don't. Nonetheless, James does overreach (with some regularity) while Adam is careful not to. Compare their respective performances of 'Change is Gonna Come' and you'll see demonstration of prowess by both but soul & musicality in only one.  Here, James was the one who (relatively speaking) merely belted & got screamy.

Yes, James is more of a true rocker.

his version is better than Adam Lambert's version. and he goes higher than Adam. but Adam's voice is more solid like more full and strong in lower register. maybe its a technique and James will learn how to use his voice so that it sounds more authentic. in higher register he is better than Adam for sure.

@elisabethgask If you type in the search terms 'Adam Lambert Change is Gonna Come' you'll see that Adam does a far superior rendition. James is very good (& I hope he wins AI 10), but any trained vocalist can tell you that James Durbin is not in the same league as Adam Lambert (for that matter, the same goes for James' competitors). For 1 thing, James overreaches at the top of the register, thus the constriction & white-out at the top. Adam could do the same & sound just as bad but knows better.

I have never really watched Idol too much in the past, but this guy is unique!! He's like Brando, Elvis, Bode Miller.....except in Music! He is genuine and completely amazing! I also saw his video when he was singing at 19 and first time on stage singing the Beatles "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and I was hooked!
