@kozmon0t They're drowned. Ants don't get 'bored'. They sleep for a few minutes at a time, yes. They sit calmly while looking after their brood, yes. But they're not meant for that kind of environment, and that is why the larvae are rotting in that gel, and the workers are either drowned or trying to stay above it.
@vinnieismyname the ants are being Tortured. They are to small and not meant for that habitat. They are sticking to the water and will probably drown.
This is wicked, the music and some of the shots are really cool. Some bits look a little depressing but I think that's prolly just through anthropomorphising. Thank you!
Hey just a question. I am thinking of buying an antfarm just like this for a science project, and I was wondering can you buy a Queen ant to go with your worker ants, you know so you can have a succesful colony and make it last for a few years instead of months? Thanks.
they are all slowly DIENG. i have them for 2 days now, and the Queen keeps digging hirself Stuck between the glass and the gel, the rest is dieng!!!! it hurst my feelings to see them be like that, especially the queen.... should i release the queen maybe-!???? or Tell me what to do!!!! just a queen and 5 ants left, +10 egs
and Ant egs, if your lucky the queen lays some extra while transporting.
in the middle of a tube is a white piece of (kathon ish soft thing, i dont know whats it called in english, you know those ear cleaners? i mean that source)
with at 1 side the ants and some food. and at the other side water
ant works is crap!! I bought it as my first real ant farm and my ants (lasius niger) crawled out the air holes and dug through the foam on the lid thats ment to keep them in!!!
I'd sugest building your own one... skimatics are easy to find on the net, and its much more cheaper and enjoyable too!!
I believe they do. Somehow the worker ants know if another queen is needed for a colony and they will feed the larva what it needs to grow into a queen. If the queen is not needed she will go on a mating flight and start her own colony.
@gyedc No. Queens are only produced after at least a year of an established colony, even then they must mate with a drone from another nest. The setup is cruel, and it isn't nice to film harmless creatures that are drowning in there.
@PollockQT I believe they do. Somehow the worker ants know if another queen is needed for a colony and they will feed the larva what it needs to grow into a queen. If the queen is not needed she will go on a mating flight and start her own colony.
@PollockQT he colony has mostly male ants for workers, but here are 2 females, the queen and a backup queen, hey each have their own chamber so they can't kill eachother, if the queen dies the backup can become queen, i think
As far as I know the Larvae/eggs are the same thing. Different ant species produce very different looking larvae - some looks soft-jelly 'grub translucent' (like the ones in this video) and others can produce 'hard white sphere' appearance eggs etc.
@scotlandw8 eggs and larva are two different things. The eggs are what the queen produces and the larva are what the eggs turn into. Then the larva turn into either coccons or pupas. Then those turn into the adult ant.
That 'grub larva' seen in the clip was found amongst the soil sample that came with the same ants. Some of the grubs eventually hatched into new worker ants & joined in the others. A few remaining larva never sadly evolved. Fascinating to watch all the same!
By the way, for the ones who thought the ants were dying; they were not dying they were sleeping - that is how they sleep and some of them were bathing so indeed it is a most amazing video. Just wanted to ge the record straight.
at 1:06 and 1:12 you can see they can't move! They are drowning! and you film it and put music behind it like it is something beautiful! You kill animals in that farm. That's all it is.
Ants have a very short life-span really, but this film will live on much longer. The memories are preserved forever, immortalized in time, sound and colour on the world web. Pain for art. Amen....
if you want a queen ant, during late spring or summer, you can just look for ants around the sandbox...that's what i did and i caught 4...now i'm trying to grow an ant colony...:)
i didn't have to dig....i saw one digging a hole and caught it, andother method is looking for flying incests around the sandy area, because some might be queen ants that didn't shed their wings yet, but those are harder to catch...good luck!
there being lazy because there is no queen so they will just give up, thats what happened to mine but they lot i have no have a queen and they wont stop working
ok if you ants are too small and keep escaping try this put 1 or 2 ant queens. and keep dropping (dead if you only have about 40 workerants) woodlice, horseflys, centipides or spiders a few choclate biscuit crums fattens them up in seconds :D And they get tunneling done faster!
Nice quality footage. I just ordered one of these. I think I might order some ants that like digging. If I go and catch my own they would probably be lazy like these ones... or I'd end up putting 2 different species together and they might fight!
wtf is wrong with you people.. its just ants :S

The ants aren't drowning... they're BORED
All these comments from people who've never had an ant farm.
Even in a dirt or sand ant farm, all they usually do is sit around.
They might be more active if the temperature fluctuated. If they think it's too cold, they'll just sit there and wait for daylight.
