Andre Agassi on Michael cont. : '' Even when he does miss however, you're not out of the woods, because he falls back on his safe serve, a knuckleball that leaves you with your jock on the ground. And just to keep you a bit more off balance, Stich is without any patterns or tendencies. You never know if he's going to serve and volley or stay back at the baseline.''
Andre Agassi on Michael in 'Open' : 'In the final I face Michael Stich, from Germany. He's been to the final at three slams, so he's not like Martin, he's a threat on every suface. He's also a superb athlete with an unreal wingspan. He has a mighty first serve, heavy and fast, and when it's on, which it usually is, he can serve you into next week. He's so accurate, you're shocked when he misses, and you have to overcome your shock to stay in the point. ''
Pete Sampras feared Stich most of all other players. He said he had big potential all great all court game, but was not mentally tough enough to keep his level for a long time.
It was Jim Courier who said "If every tennis player in this world plays his best tennis, Stich will be the best". Unfortunately he could not hold this level over a long period, but from time to timehe played brillant tennis, nearly unmatched.
Behind Stefan Edberg the best players from the net I have ever seen.
Tommy Haas wasn't a good tennis player. He has no potential and he wasn't a fighter in his first years of career. After his injuries he came back and fight defently more. You must only see the top ten in the atp ranking, not number 40. The physical from Stich was bad and he took his tennis career sometimes a little bit easy. He was some of the best players in the top 3.
Tommy Hass is a great fighter and even Federer said that if he hadn't had so much bad luck with injuries he would have won many more titles over the years.
Stich was just a great tennis player. He reached 3 Grand Slam finals and won several Master's.
:-) I love Tommy too....but you're right he had a lot of bad luck in his career....all the injuries, the accident of his parents when he was on top of his game. I hope his high now will bring a nice end to this tough career
I remember this match very well. A fantastic performance by Stich. That guy had an incredible touch and unmeasurable potential. On clay Muster was as dominant in the mid-90´s as is Nadal today. But Stich dismissed the defending Champion of Roland Garros 4/6, 6/4, 6/1, 7/6 in the fourth round, in just his second tournament after a ten week injury break. Too bad he couldn´t quite keep that level in the final against Kafelnikov.

Stich has always been my fav player. Too bad people in Germany never appreciated him.
But some players were scared of his potential.
Just read what Pete Sampras writes at the end of is autobiography, when he compares his head-to-head records against his rivals...

Muster would have won this tournament in fine fashion but/for Michael Stich...

Little doubt. Stich was the kind of guy who could beat anyone in tennis when he was on...and, unfortunately for Muster, he was on in this one.
