I do not prefer Rosina sang by a soprano , but Gruberova as always steels my heart . She is brilliant ,with such a rich and radiant voice ,still now ... ! I really appreciate this performance !
However, there is this very funny rossinian anecdote whereby after a stunning performance of a famous soprano of his time doing an overloaded version of Rosina's cavatina, Rossini congratulated the soprano full of enthusiasm adding "...by the way... who wrote this piece!?"
All in all this is a very recognisable version that Rossini -I am sure- would be proud of....
Yes! I completely agree! She's always looked like a cherub, young or now. I wanted to squeeze her when I watched her Gretel on DVD (the opera made into a movie).
She's brilliant in this aria. I don't think it's too much - I've heard worse, when it seemed as if the soprano won't ever shut up and end the song. Edita's rendition certainly doesn't give me that feeling. And for the high Fs, she can sing them effortlessly, so why not?
Too much technique? As a singer, technique is at the foundation of all that we do. Gruberova is a technical master -- and she makes it look easy! Singers struggle for their entire lives/careers for that kind of ease. Her rendition of this aria is BRILLIANT -- and unsurpassed. Bartoli comes close but no one can match Edita.
omg stop complaining.. geez if you could sing opera go ahead and sing it half of you dummies probably can't even sing opera. so stop complaining shes obviously not gunna sound the same, cos its not the same person gosh
Ugh... Rosina is not all about the high notes, you know... Her embellishments are too self-indulgent for my taste. She might as well have composed a new aria, really. Thank god, they don't do stuff like this any more. For Rosina, I'll take Teresa Berganza and Joyce DiDonato anytime over any great sopranos.
Yes,I and many others know that "Rosina is not all about high notes" but a tradition of having high sopranos sing this role continues to this day. And with that tradition comes high notes and ornaments!
God forbid - don't ornament any Mozart arias (as your name implies) Maybe you should just sing/listen to Puccini, Strauss and Wagner where it's sing 'con scritto'. Joyce is an incredible Rosina too!
Oh, don't get me wrong; I'm all for embellishments. In fact, Berganza could be accused of not being adventurous with ornaments, but then, during her time, it wasn't in fashion, possibly due to the lack of research.
Gruberova's is the "If you got it, then flaunt it" kind of embellishments; those thrilling high Fs, among others, are simply out of whack. Then, this was before Bartoli (the most ingenious and stylish embellisher) and DiDonato. No good conductor would allow such self-indulgence.
@operadude32 I have to agree. Composers, even Rossini, wrote ornamentation into their own operas depending on who sang them, and I would hardly consider that 'self-indulgent'. Singing an aria an octave higher than Callas - or Berganze or DiDonato - doesn't negate its credibility; and Edita's interpretations are always brilliant and visceral.
@vitellia no its not all about high notes is very true, but i think you could count on one hand the number of people who can sing with that much effortlessness charm and wit
@vitellia About 90% of this versions 'embellishments' are the published optional endings of phrases. They make the song more interesting and less repeditive, and yes, not everyone does them but they are published for the harder, more interesting option.
I have a published version of the piece which I'm currently studying and most of those ornaments are written in.
I don't believe you can compare a mezzo singing Rosina to a soprano singing it. This rare excerpt was posted to give Gruberova fans a glimpse of her Rosina. I love Berganza too!
I don't think there's a high Gb6. The highest note she sang is F6 (I've perfect pitch). But heck, that's impressive enough! It's 2 of them, full-throated and completely effortless.
Yes I know she sang a G6 in that one, and I know she's capable of singing higher than F6, but over here there isn't a F#6/Gb6. I've just listened to it again. It's only in the 'cadenzas' that she goes really high up, and the highest note in the cadenzas that she sang is an F. The song is in F major - so the top note of the arpeggio (pianissimo, in the first cadenza) would be an F and not an F#, even if it sounded like she went sharp (she didn't).
Sounds almost like MIliza Korjus...

This role belongs to Teresa Berganza.
You can see the video in You Tube for the same aria. Check it our and then you can really decide.
