  • Now this is my type of music, not that crap Justice beaver or whatever his name is.

  • I've heard that they will be on Hunger Games soundtrack, can't wait to hear the song that they made for this movie :DD

  • @TheCoraline31 I haven't read the book, but I can't wait to see the movie. I love books, but I have a habit of reading books after watching the movies..oh, lessons learned the hard way xD

  • Can't We All Get Along?

  • @MamaKRamsey no

  • @MamaKRamsey This is Youtube. There's no danger of us getting along! I'm sure if I scroll down far enough, someone will have called this song "gay".

  • Every time I hear this I think of me and the girl I love. Did I mention that I'm black?

  • I am a writer-writer of fictions.

I am the heart that you call home.

And I've written pages upon pages-

Trying to rid you from my bones.

    I understand.

  • this song is so melancholy and beautiful....it makes me think about my family and my ex who was the ONLY woman i ever truly loved......great post!

  • waking up to this song is bliss

  • and if you don't love me let me go..

  • This song is utterly heartfelt. <3

  • "We're so campy cool, gotta love us" narcissism is not a good substitute for what beautiful music really is .. a brilliant branding of emptiness.

  • @nyomythus I want to agree with you, but I don't really understand what you just said.

  • And I am a writer, writer of fictions!

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • every couple of weeks this song randomly gets stuck in my head, especially the line "i am the heart that you call home." i think ima get that tattooed soon.

  • @randomcallsRus i feel like that line could go either way... either saying "i am the person you love" or "you are the person I love" .... that being said, i think it's a risky tattoo. Your almost running the risk of walking around with a tat that says "you love me..." which would be funny in a cocky sort of way, but it sounds like your going for something meaningful here. I'm not trying to be a dick - just sayin.

  • @YesYouAreIgnorant i don't interpret that line as "you love me" at all. in fact, i interpret it entirely different in a way that relates to my family.

with that said, i don't usually take advice from those who have not been asked in the first place. i'm not trying to be a dick - just sayin.

  • @randomcallsRus *sigh* I guess you just can't save some people from themselves. You're the one that will look like the retard in a vague tattoo directed at no one in particular, not me.

that being said, don't put out personal thoughts or feelings on a public forum if you don't want some sort of response. This isn't your private journal. Just sayin.

  • @YesYouAreIgnorant lol this isn't my private journal.. you're right. but there's thousands of other comments just as connected to this song as mine and you decide to pick on me? your username is YesYouAreIgnorant, after all.

with that said i didn't post my comment with a definitive answer in my head. it's not as if i went out and got that line tattooed immediately. however, who are you to say that i will look like a retard with a vague tattoo?

  • @YesYouAreIgnorant if the song means a lot to me (which it does) and that line in particular strikes a chord, who are you to judge my decisions? there are people in the world with mom tattoos splattered across chests and forearms.. but they're happy and they like it because it fulfills some part of them. i understand you're trying to be helpful but c'mon.. i just posted a comment not to anyone in particular.

  • And if you dont love me, let me gooo... Thats fantastic

  • I am a writer of fiction part is my absolute favorite.

  • @bltlover995 mine two

  • I'm a county lineman | on a high line | so will be my grandson | there are power lines in our bloodlines

  • @jeffcouret that's a genius lyric, love that part.

  • @jeffcouret That line gives me chills every time.

  • What a nice change of pace from my usual hardcore punk, for those of yopu who only listen to metal and punk ITS called diversity (and thats not an old, old wooden ship)

  • im an...injun driver?

  • god damn haven't listened to this song since 2005. brings back lottts of memories.

  • @mitchyisgay same here i saw they were on some show and I thought "hey hang on I know them for some reason"

  • Takes me back to summer 2006... what a summer. :-) no regrets.

  • @hertdeedle Personally I think theres somthing anachronistic and haunting about folk music in general - the decemberists in particular strike a very primal chord for me. And maybe Im partial to them because I also am a book nerd. On a side note, kudos to you both for using your big kid words and actually promoting an interesting discussion.

  • @barfly487 Like we said, it is a matter of taste. Folk writers would be shaking in their grave if they knew that we were calling this folk music. Before we can talk about this song and how anachronistic folk music is, we must first clarify one thing...This song is as "Folk" as it is "Death metal". OK, maybe I've spent too much time responding to peoples reaction to my first post. How about this...I'm sorry if I offended anyone who likes the Decembersists.

  • God Asked me

  • Just heard this song this morning on Pandora, I like it. By the way what's up with these kids arguing and name calling on youtube!? This is a place to comment about the music, not host your 8th grader fights and name calling.

  • LOVE this song. Best Decemberists song!

  • I think that says "I'm an engine driver", not "I'm an Asian driver."

  • @iolanthela rly? i didnt know, what with the title and all. it's a joke, dude!

  • @iolanthela STFU. go listen to your indie music.

  • @hertdeedle STFU asshole. i can tell you are a douchebag.

  • @zepphead333 Ya know zepphead? The fact that you called me an Asshole/douche bag does not offend me at all. There are two ways I can take it: a) You're weak, misinformed, too young, or too old. b) Decemberists fans are actually capable of doing something offensive! I shall pardon you. have a good day.

  • @hertdeedle lulz

  • @hertdeedle Dude, who asked you?

  • @hertdeedle To each his own! I respect your opinion (however much I disagree with it), but I can't get past how metal and hard rock make my ears bleed. No matter how soulful and deep the lyrics are, metal is just a cacophony. The Decemberists have good sound & they have all the talent, fun, creativity, and originality that you say they lack. If you want to hear something that lacks talent, fun, creativity, and originality, listen to some Ke$ha, or maybe Lil' Wayne or Nickelback- all IN style.

  • @BeccaLovesBeatles You're right. To each his own. Sorry Becca, I just happen to like riskier musicians than them. In my opinion, there is nothing remotely sexy, thoughtful, primal, or unpredictable about this song. It just makes me feel nothing. It doesn't help that the vocal delivery is pseudo theatrical, contrived, and highly "forced". Fake, if you will. There is no difference between say Nickleback's manly "marble mouth" vocals and Collin's forced "book nerd" delivery. just fake:(

  • @hertdeedle I actually like the "forced delivery"...it's not fake, it's acting. Meloy takes on characters for his songs; he's not singing as Colin Meloy. The way he sings and pronounces words is (I think) supposed to sound old-worldy, which fits the tone and content of the songs. I personally love it.

  • @BeccaLovesBeatles Oh yeah! I LOVE THE BEATLES!!!!!!

  • @hertdeedle I am sorry that you feel The Decemberists are not cleaver enough to meat your expectations. It seems that your opinion has given many people a beef against you. Personally, I think you express yourself well, not butchering the English language like some on the internet. Your comments seem to be witty, not at all marrow-minded.

  • @onlyampersand I think it's funny how you misspelled "meet" as "meat," then said,"...given many people a beef..." Common mistake, I'm not trying to be a prick and point out this mistake, just thought it was funny. And if it wasn't an accident, then you sir, are a hidden gem in the world of comedy. Keep it up.

  • @Awooga44 I think he did it on purpose because he also threw in "cleaver", "butchering" and "marrow".

  • @onlyampersand Well done :)

  • @onlyampersand I admit it took me too long to catch your sarcasm. However, you making fun of my hastily written comments has nothing to do with the subject at hand. My comments have only to do with the music. I'm sure you feel quite good that you were able to showcase your middle school level spelling skills and humor ON YOUTUBE. How about I pay more attention to my spelling, and you listen to better music...Fair?

  • The first two chords of this song remind me of some Pink Floyd song. BUT I CAN"T FIGURE OUT WHICH ONE!! ARGHHHH

  • @alignome Sounds a bit like the first two chords about a minute into Wish You Were Here.

  • @alignome I sounds a bit like Half a Person, by The Smiths to me. Check that one out, great track.

  • I love this song!!!

  • its (eli the barrow boy)

    in the pic

    the barrow boy

and his wife is the tree!

  • all music needs an accordian

  • 4 u nny

  • omg i love this song my bf sung this to me... so many memories ;)

  • awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  • quit bawwwing you depressing tards.

  • I always think of a great man when i hear this song, and I can't have him =(

  • I'M AN ASIAN DRIVER . . . better waaatch out.

  • @veggievampire I'm An Asian!.... Better waaatch out!

  • @veggievampire I'M AN ASIAN... better waaatch out.

  • @veggievampire love it!

  • does this need some big, over-the-top stage show with crappy background dancers, tons of make up, clouds of smoke and a ginormous, distracting laser show? no. music like this works on its own. as long as there are bands like this and people who are supporting them, i have faith in the world. godbless

  • hipsters -3

  • My sister just showed me this song my girlfriend of five months broke up with me today on our anniversary I cried like all day and this song was perfect for me didnt chear me up but let me know I'm not the only out there with a broken heart

  • I don't know why I've never heard this song before. It sounds cheesy, but I've just had a "Where have you been all my life" moment with this song.

    So perfect, indeed.

  • and if you dont love me... let me go. ugh. so perfect.

  • as deceptiveshape said above ^^ I can understand the heartache.. not first hand but by watching my poor brother. Him and I shared musical tastes and I would always be a helpful critic to his acoustic songs that he wrote. He fell in love with this girl he met in Europe and they dated for a long time. He and I listened to the Decemberists that entire time, especially this song. Soon after, she broke his heart and left him for a guy in Brazil. He always listened to this song.. it broke my heart+his

  • @bergy305 Aww fuck. =(

  • Comment removed

  • It's been about five to six years since I first heard this song.

It still gives me chills it's so beautiful.

  • this song has been on repeat for me, amazing

  • i'm 12 and wat is this

  • this song is so hauntingly beautiful

  • Wow. Story of my life.

  • i first heard this song my senior year of high school and it still gives me the same feeling. Picaresque to me is a flawless musical masterpiece.

  • As a writer, I feel like this song pretty much describes me. Hmm...

  • This could not speak for how I feel in my relationship with this girl any more. She says she loves me, but it just doesn't seem like it. But, I think she may say "love" not as a true love sort.

  • and if you dont love me.. .let me go

  • i love this

  • how could we live without the decemberists if u can answer this i will give a fiver lol ko no cocky answers =P lol

  • @RockMetalAndStuff Spelling. How does it work.

  • @LazerPanther lol =P

  • @LazerPanther How do I learned spelling?

  • @RockMetalAndStuff Maybe if we started listening to the Novemberists

  • @waxonwaxoff13 ye probs lol =)

  • wonderful. Thats it.

  • i like the song, i didnt know that USA has this kinda band. this band is fantastic...

  • i seriously need my daily fix of decemberists or else my day doesn't feel right or complete. i love them so much.

  • I really think that Picaresque will eventually go down as their masterpiece. I have enjoyed the other albums a lot, but Picaresque is something truly special as far as songwriting.

  • Love it. So many people can relate to it. So can I. And it's so simple, yet lovely.

  • must've listened to this like 50 times in one day, i just keep hitting repeat

  • that sucks but this is a cool song

  • ok first of all i can't even begin to explain my love for these guys its INDESCRIBABLE! I know ALL of their songs. Ive loved them since i heard the Apology Song when i was like 6 :D! Every song is great. Brilliant lyrics .. . x LOVE THE<! NME said they were 1 of the 50 bands you must see before you die, i agree! And they're North-West Americnas like me :P! xx LOVE

  • i have been listening to this song since i was 6 and i still LOVE it nothing can stop me from listening to it and every time i listen to it i ALWAYS sing alone lol thank you dad for puting this song on the day i first heard it (witch was one of the worst days EVER) gave me a big big big smile :D

  • @98Morgee That makes you, like, 11?

    Pretty cool, kid.

  • They can thank Robert Pollard for the inspiration.

  • How dreadfully trite.

  • beautiful song..anyone who doesnt like this song doesnt like music. Nothing more needs to be said

  • @SendMeBelow22 completely agree. x

  • When I listen to this song, its all I can hear.

  • I love The Decemberists

  • @skaterkid915 i love them to <3

  • I'm a money lender, I have fortunes upon fortunes, take my hand for tender, I am tortured, ever tortured <3

    Love this song!

  • This would be my theme song if I was a movie character.

  • hah... I tried singing to it near the end and started crying xD

    <3 i love this song.

  • Ugh... this song.

  • @PreciousRobot piss off

  • @foreverdancer898 Excuse me? I love this song more than life itself. I was implying that it's brilliance brought me to shear disgust.

  • When this album first came out, this was one of my least favorite songs on there. In the past year it's become one of my favorite songs ever.

  • Best decemberists song. If all their songs were this good I'd listen to them constantly.

  • Inquisitive listener here---what would be a good first time album to get? Thanx!

  • If the laws of nature would allow it, I would bear Collin Meloy's voice's children

  • @mentallyunstablepc that was a truly epic comment.

    And ditto! :)

  • i think it's weird but awesome that the lead singer's voice is much deaper than his singing voice

  • Songs like this always seem to appear just when I need them! Sigh! Thank you Colin Meloy!

  • this song consumed a part of my life. I still love it.

  • I have always loved this song, but only recently have been able to truly relate to it. Such a bittersweet sentiment.

  • I LOVE THE DECEMBERISTS

  • @Bebkins OMGIFUCKINGLOOOOVETHEDECEMBERISTSIWANTTOBURYMYSELFINCOLINMELOY'SFANTASTICMUTTONCHOPS!!!

  • this song is outstanding. don't whine about your failed 17-year-old loves; it has a lot more significance than your unrequited and confused crush and you will love again. anyway, just appreciate the song for what it is. great stuff.

  • i love this song...

  • I feel the same, I love this song.. I cant get enough of it even though I want to kill myself when I listen to it.

  • such a beautiful track!

i guess thats at least *****

  • This song brings me to tears. The lyrics. Every time I listen to it, it reminds me of my first and one and only true relationship with a girl I loved very much, but it did not work because she did not feel for me as I did for her. Pages upon pages trying to rid her from my bones, but bones are forever... here to stay just as she will be.

  • Deceptiveshape, you should watch the film the 500 days of summer.

  • @deceptiveshape HHey i get it but if she didnt feel the same as you did then she wasnt the one for you man. dont blame yourself

  • @deceptiveshape I love your comment.

  • @deceptiveshape Wow man... Realy deep shit about something fairly simple. I love it though. Props to you for sticking it out. There will always be another.

  • @deceptiveshape lovely comment mate..

  • @deceptiveshape Jesus Christ, man. I teared up just reading that.

  • @deceptiveshape find a new girl

  • @deceptiveshape We're in the same boat, mate. I too have a one and only love. This song puts my feelings exactly into words.

  • @deceptiveshape

this also reminds me of ''my one true relationship'' but it did not work either.. I still don't know if he ever loved me. He used to say so but now he's confused and I'm confused and.. crap.

    xD

  • @deceptiveshape I feel for you dude, sincerely.

  • @deceptiveshape definitely been there myself before, dude. i love your comment. and i'm pretty sure a vast majority of the people on here can likely relate. it's never fun, it's always hard, and it takes time. just know that it WILL get better, and that if she didn't feel the same for you, she wasn't the one for you. your TRUE one and only will come along in due time. i can promise you that. hang in there.

  • @deceptiveshape join the club man

  • @deceptiveshape beautiful.

  • @deceptiveshape i feel you bro, im heartbroken right now, i showed her soo much love and she took it and stepped on it..after 4 years. i wanna forget and move on, but i gave her everything she ever deserved. and its hard to live life.

  • @deceptiveshape

i hear ya, also another great band to listen to when feeling crappy about a relantionship is Cloud Cult, especially their album Hippopautamus (i have no idea how to spell that plus its a much longer title, needless to say it will help trust me)

  • @deceptiveshape

    BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW!!!

  • I love this band with all of my heart. The best music I've ever heard.

  • indie can be a genre or the status of whether a band is signed or not.

    cool.

    anyways, this song is nice.

  • Anyone else see any inspiration for this song in R.E.M.'s Driver 8? Colin was a kid when REM put that song out so he probably heard it before. Has Colin ever said anything about a connection?

  • And I am a writer, writer of fictions

I am the heart that you call home

And I've written pages upon pages

Trying to rid you from my bones

  • O: LOve It

  • does it matter if its indie or not? no.

  • Good music is good music. :-)

  • @desertmusic13 It's indie, but also what is classified as "Baroque-rock", a sort of rock hybrid between older and newer styles.

I do know that this track is amazing regardless.

  • "my bones"

yeek these guys give me such chills.

is it me or is it kind of cut off at the end?

  • its not cut off it leads into on the bus mall, the next song on the album

  • cant stop playing this tune:]

  • hm this may be weird to say but idky but i love when he says "there are power lines in our blood lines."

    I ♥ indie music

  • They're not indie......they are signed.

  • yes they are too indie do you even know what indie music is?

  • indie=independent. the decemberists are signed.

  • yeh but it's also a style of music now.

If we mean 'independent', now we just use the word "independent".

"indie" is the subgenre of music.

  • that's a ridiculous genre that was unfortunately spread around by some hipsters who take pride in knowing about music first. what exactly would go under this "genre"?

  • Well, according to people, The Decemberists.

I didn't say that it was good or right, that's just how people think.

  • The beginning of this song reminds me of the Smith's "Half a Person".

  • any Decemberists fans out there in NYC?

  • I don't know about New York, but there are many Decemberists fans in Boston.

  • shucks :-(

Boston always seems to have good band following.......GUSTER is from there.....let me know if they will come to NYC soon...I'm so there:-)

  • @boogiepop14mc great song as well.

  • i agree with everyone on here. decemberist fans unite! this song is absolutely beautiful...

  • There's something about this band I can't find in any other. They are truly amazing. Colin's voice, the instruments, the subject matter. It's a perfect combination.

  • ... I discovered this band from the back of my Pride and Prejudice book. (They had an "If They Were on FaceBook Today" bit.) Amazing song. Adding this band to my favorites after just one song. C:
