  • Arazi was never the same after his knee operations. He wasn't fit, either.

  • Yeah, I remember Arazi romping in the Juvenile and expecting to see the same thing in this race. He made that huge move like he did in the Juvenile but was out of run by the top of the stretch. I was one of the people suckered into that one.

  • I don't know if arthroscopic surgery cost Arazi the race, perhaps he was really was miler, but it was unrealistic and unfair to have brought him back so soon after double knee surgery and expect him to win. When an athlete, like a basketball player has arthroscopic surgery they say they need at least a year to come back all the way.

  • Arazi was never the same after he had surgery on both knees after BC junevile.

I'm surprised so many bet him up. You can be out 5 months then have one race on turf and expect to win the Derby. He wasn't fit and like I said before was never the same after his operation

  • thats was not the arazi i know that horse had a jet engine at times on it

  • I know what you mean...I overbet that

Arazi also. the biggest Ky Derby bet I

    ever made...and the worst.

I made up my mind to bet the horse in

    November...the Breeders Cup Juvenile.

  • Was on Millionaires Row that day. I lost a small fortune on this race. Believed all the hype and bet Arazi BIG. When I tell the story, I have always said that my horse never got a call. This video proves otherwise. He actually had a shot coming around the final turn. I quit betting sports because of this race.....probably turned out to be a good thing!

  • I remember that day too. There was so much Arazi talk. My sister bet him...I bet Pistols and Roses but when Pat Day delivered that on 'Tee I was silenced as well as all the people who couldn't beleive Arazi wilted. Good horse among many in the 91-92-93 seasons.

  • RIP Lil E. Tee

  • Lil E. Tee, 20, was euthanized March 18 following complications from an intestinal problem.

  • wow. first time ive seen this. in the last furlong arazi almost refuses, look at the jockey nearly falling off over his shoulder.he must have been in some pain with the bad knees. pity he didnt win and live up to his billing. not taking away from the winner.

  • I got to meet Pat Day once... great man...

  • Down The Stretch They Come Got TI Love It

  • haha did you hear the crowd after he crossed the finish? thats hilarious its sounds like they were all stunned. theres a great story behing pat day and lil e tee, pat day was actually looking for a better mount all week after he was commited to e tee. all the connections to the horse told him everyday that he was gong to win it, not even joking you got to look up the story hes one of my fave just because of it. did u know he was born on in a barn that bred mainly trotters and pacers?

  • That's quite the amazing backstory. Lil E Tee ran the race of his life that day, and having "patient" Pat Day on his back certainly helped. I guess it was just meant to be!

Thanks for sharing that excellent info.

    Have a great week!

  • Ummm...no A P Indy? What gives?

  • He was scratched right before the derby. If he had been in it. The race would not have even been close. A P Indy would have crushed them

  • Totally agree, Rodney. He would have won the Triple Crown for sure! My all-time favorite horse I have ever seen. Seattle Slew x Secretariat mare. Gosh! When he was scratched, the race became w-i-d-e open!

  • How much would A P Indy have buried this bunch by? The final time this group posted in the '92 derby was 2:04. When Indy won the BC Classic later the same year, at the same distance, he stoped the clock in 2:00:1/5. That's almost 20 lengths difference, as per the wisdom of 1 length per 1/5th of a second. Indy would have dominated this substandard crew.

  • Cant compare the two because it's 2 different tracks into two different climates. A P Indy probably could have won had he not got injured the morning of the race we dont know. its just strange how favorites cant seem to win the derby. lately its not even the best horse who wins the derby, its the one gets the best trip

  • AP Indy would have won this had he been healthy. He was scratched the morning of the race!

  • Arazi would have won this if he hadn't been operated on

  • I think so too but he didnt have the proper seasoning he needed. they should have kept him in the U.S. At least he made a good showing and gave everyone a good scare. He just made his move way too early, he started his run shortly after they hit the back stretch. the jockey said he never asked him to run he did it on his own.

  • -- I did not worry a jot about Arazi in this race. Without a 3 YO prep race in America, he was never going to beat these seasoned, tough group, I didn't care how good he had been the fall prior. I forget who I had in this race, but I know I got beat.

  • Strange the way the talk is about the horse that didnt win? But what a 2 year old he was. The best ever.

  • You know even though he only owned two horses of note, M.C. Hammer I'd say had a fairly good go at Churchill Downs two big events. He won the Oaks in 1991 with Lite Light, then finished third in the 1992 Derby with Dance Floor.

  • For awhile in this race he looked like he was going to duplicate that BCJ race though. I had Casual Lies in this race, and man he almost got it done at a huge price. Living in Hershey, it was cool seeing the ONLY PA bred at the time to win the big one.

  • Arazi was a miler and while i loved the horse, it was

impossible for him to better what he did in the juvenile

He was still the best horse in the world in November 91

  • I agree 100%, he was a miler with only one prep, and had surgery during the off-season. The media built him into something that was impossible to live up to.

By the way, Durkin's call during the Juvenile has to be the best ever.

  • Absolutely.. Now Theres a guy who really does know how to commentate.

Im not sure the operation to remove bone chips in his knees was the reason for the defeat.

To my mind he blatantly didnt stay the trip as he stopped so quickly. If you go to '1992 Prix Omnium' which was his first run of 92' The Brilliance was still there. I had reservations before The Derby on account of him not being proven over the distance, but all the talk of him winning the triple crown etc... he could only ever fail

  • Arazi certainly came with menacing rush in the Juvenile!

  • An interesting postcript is that so many European journalists went over to Churchill Downs to cover Arazi's race that they all missed Lester Piggott's historic victory in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, UK, that same afternoon. I know that many of them are still annoyed about that!

  • give him credit, Arazi did make his move. just did wayyy tooo early. i was absolutely crushed when i saw this back in 92. i was 11 at the time. but Arazi would always be one of my favorites.

  • Arazi was never the same after his knee surgury. I think his career would have turned out different if he didnt need surgury and had stayed in the U.S.

  • Arazi never fulfilled the promise of his BCJ victory.

That's still one of the most memorable performances I've seen in appx. 40 years of watching thoroughbred racing.

In fact, I've never seen anything like it.

  • Dr Devious went on to win the Epsom Derby a month later...whilst Arazi juts flopped, and flopped, and flopped...

  • It's really too bad that Arazi wasn't able to live up to all the, to be honest, unrealistic hype that surrounded him. It would have been great for him to continue on as he did in the '91 BCJ, but alas, it just wasn't meant to be. Take care.
