The only way you could compare the US and Russia is when the were the biggest indrustrialized countries, and economic powers after WWI. But the US had a liberalized/open market economy, Russia a centralized/planned economy and protected market, which ultimately provoked its own demise.
So the Soviet Union was able to modernize in one generation, that doesn't imply that the standard of living rose at all, and indeed it didn't. Hiccups in the supply chain, widespread famine--it would take over a year to have a car which you've already purchased finally delivered to you, their industrial policy was a disaster.
