Reminds me so much of Davy Jones when he's playing the organ in Dead Man's Chest. I don't know why when this whole album's about Moby Dick, with a bit of Elephant Man at the end.
Joseph Merrick lived a life of complete misery. However despite being looked upon as a disfigured person, a freak of nature, in most cases, or an outcast, he really wanted to live a normal life...
@Blargman57 watch the movie "The Elephant Man" with anthony hopkins, it is a great movie and it is about Joseph Merrick. Or you could just go to wikipedia but I recommed watching the movie.
i love how the music in this album are lyrics by itself...it represents perfectly what the song is trying to say...thats one of the things that is making me love mastodon
@DuringCreation I myself just picture Ishmael just floating along after the whole mess with this song. I usually think of Hearts Alive as like, the climax of this whole album.
@zerathul13 Makes you wonder if theres a connection between (Elephant) Man and their name, Mastodon. Evidence being Elephant Man, Joseph Merrick, and Pendulous Skin ending each of their first 3 albums.
@Boston1114 I don't think that's where it came from, Mastodons don't actually come from the same genus as Elephants. But who knows if the band knew that.
@NomoTheDomo Yes but they are related. And during prehistoric times there were alot of climate changes which in some areas contributed to extinction or evolution taking it's own path...So while you have Elephants in Africa and India now, you don't have them in America, where fossils of mastodons were also found. You could call it mutation and a whole new genus is created. About the songs...I think Elephant Man represents the members in a metaphoric way. The rest is every man's personal interp.

If I could reach from pole to pole
Or grasp the ocean with a span,
I would be measured by the soul;
The mind’s the standard of the man.
- Joseph Merrick.

What did the world look like to him? What came through Merrick's eyes?
zapper421 2 months ago
@zapper421 ....figuratively? As in, how he saw people, and society? Or literally, as in.....How was his vision?

So I was sitting here listening to Joseph Merrick by Mastodon right?
Yeah well, all of a sudden I was on Mars.
And I was like, 'cool.'

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Pendulous Skin yet. That is obviously also about Joseph Merrick.

@MetalHeadFilipeG96 Neither did I. I said Mastodon writing two songs about the elephant man was overkill.
HoosierMF 1 year ago
@HoosierMF
i thought you were talking about the band Overkill, sorry
still, Mastodon has actually wrote 3 songs about the elephant man: Elephant Man, Joseph Merrick and Pendulous Skin
MetalHeadFilipeG96 1 year ago
@HoosierMF Its not overkill, it's only linked to the Elephant Man by its title.
