  • Reminds me so much of Davy Jones when he's playing the organ in Dead Man's Chest. I don't know why when this whole album's about Moby Dick, with a bit of Elephant Man at the end.

  • Heard this song for the first time yesterday while high... best experience ever

  • Joseph Merrick lived a life of complete misery. However despite being looked upon as a disfigured person, a freak of nature, in most cases, or an outcast, he really wanted to live a normal life...

    R.I.P. Joseph Merrick

  • What the fuck is with the like, 50 dumb ass top comments?!?!?!?!

  • Reminds me of Tristam village theme of 1st diablo...amazing.

  • Headies + Mastodon <3

  • If I could reach from pole to pole

Or grasp the ocean with a span,

    I would be measured by the soul;

The mind’s the standard of the man.

    - Joseph Merrick.

  • I love how everyone love each other here and don't argue about anything xD It must be the music! :P

  • What did the world look like to him? What came through Merrick's eyes?

  • @zapper421 ....figuratively? As in, how he saw people, and society? Or literally, as in.....How was his vision?

  • Such a beautiful and moving piece of music.

  • This sounds like a full sea shanty.

  • This should be in-game music for Diablo III

  • All the Elephant Man songs are perect.

  • read some wiki article, or something about him and listen to this...

  • This song has always reminded me of the ocean, man. You can almost feel the waves lapping against your ears when you listen to it.

  • best song of the album

  • Pardon my ignorance peeps, but who is Joseph Merrick?

  • @Blargman57 watch the movie "The Elephant Man" with anthony hopkins, it is a great movie and it is about Joseph Merrick. Or you could just go to wikipedia but I recommed watching the movie.

  • So I was sitting here listening to Joseph Merrick by Mastodon right?

Yeah well, all of a sudden I was on Mars.

    And I was like, 'cool.'

  • I can't believe nobody has mentioned Pendulous Skin yet. That is obviously also about Joseph Merrick.

  • @FourthHorseman666 Not about him exactly but yes the song titles are all about him

  • a fucking masterpiece.

  • i love how the music in this album are lyrics by itself...it represents perfectly what the song is trying to say...thats one of the things that is making me love mastodon

  • can someone post the lyrics?

  • @squeezeslemons ...there are no lyrics man, it's an instrumental :P

  • @TheLastBaron16 I know just being a smart ass =D

  • @squeezeslemons Haha sorry that's just me being slow :P

  • @squeezeslemons Haha sorry that's just me being slow :P

  • i cant stop playing this song, its amazing

  • remindes me of dvinations

  • This song is so different from this album and soo mellow.....It's like the calm after the storm.

  • @SOADVSSOAD Yeah i've always thought that. It's a perfect way to end the album

  • @TheLastBaron16 totally! i can see it in front of me: ahab being pulled away by the white whale in the deep. sick! or maybe its just me being high...

  • @DuringCreation I myself just picture Ishmael just floating along after the whole mess with this song. I usually think of Hearts Alive as like, the climax of this whole album.

  • @ThePabo hearts alive is definitely the climax

  • @TheLastBaron16 Not to mention that Remission ended with "Elephant Man", nickname for Joseph Merrick. Feels like a sequel.

  • @zerathul13 Makes you wonder if theres a connection between (Elephant) Man and their name, Mastodon. Evidence being Elephant Man, Joseph Merrick, and Pendulous Skin ending each of their first 3 albums.

  • @Boston1114 I don't think that's where it came from, Mastodons don't actually come from the same genus as Elephants. But who knows if the band knew that.

  • @NomoTheDomo Yes but they are related. And during prehistoric times there were alot of climate changes which in some areas contributed to extinction or evolution taking it's own path...So while you have Elephants in Africa and India now, you don't have them in America, where fossils of mastodons were also found. You could call it mutation and a whole new genus is created. About the songs...I think Elephant Man represents the members in a metaphoric way. The rest is every man's personal interp.

  • amazing song about an amazing man from an amazing band

    Mastodon Rules \m/

    R.I.P. Joseph Merrick

  • @MetalHeadFilipeG96 Overkill really. They already wrote a song about him.

  • Comment removed

  • @MetalHeadFilipeG96 Neither did I. I said Mastodon writing two songs about the elephant man was overkill.

  • @HoosierMF

i thought you were talking about the band Overkill, sorry

still, Mastodon has actually wrote 3 songs about the elephant man: Elephant Man, Joseph Merrick and Pendulous Skin

  • @HoosierMF Its not overkill, it's only linked to the Elephant Man by its title.

  • @artnNixon Shut up kid

  • @MetalHeadFilipeG96 A song from an amazing band about an amazing man*

  • @xxxP41Nxxx
