(2.) In Thailand, lese majeste laws no longer serve their original purpose - protecting the prestige of the monarchy. They have have become tools politicians use to suppress criticism. "Rather than protecting the prestige of the monarchy, the invoking of the lese majeste law has become a tawdry and naked attempt to use the institution to suppress views that one side or another does not like. Lese majeste inevitably becomes a political tool aimed at suppression of criticism." (cont.)
(3.) And as the King has said, lese majeste also tarnishes the reputation of the monarchy when unscrupulous parties decide to level a charge. The King points out that the accusation of lese majeste impacts the monarchy directly. Talking to Thai society as a whole, the King says, "If you rule out all criticism as a violation, the damage is done to the King." But the government that most greatly abused lese majeste in Thailand was Thaksin's government. I hope western people must to pay respect to our his majesty the king and really hope they respect our traditions and cultures and understand that Thai's King has so captured the heart of the nation. 1. The Bangkok Post reports 58% of voters approved the new Thai Constitution - including a majority of voters in all regions of Thailand except the Northeast. 62% of Northeast voters opposed the Constitution, as did a majority of voters in a few provinces in the North - areas where the TRT party was strong and effective. This bodes well for Thai democracy as the new populist party with many TRT policies promises to do very well in December's election for a new democratic Thai government.(cont.)

Today, the Bangkok Posts reports that an overwhelming majority of Thai voters approved the new Thai Constitution in yesterday's vote. Nationwide, more than two-thirds of voters approved the new Constitution, and a solid majority of voters approved the Constitution in every region of Thailand. Prime Minister Surayud reiterates that the general election for a democratic Thai government will be held in December. Thailand will return to democracy by year's end. The Thai people have won.

Mickey, The Thai King's wealth is derived from stocks and commercial real estate, not individual rents. It is used to support more than 4000 Royal Projects the King has created to help the Thai people - primarily the poor. These projects provide hospitals, farms, training, water etc. His auto-sufficiency programs have provide homes & a means to make a living to thousands of rural poor. The Thai King is a great and compassionate man.
