Fucking Beautifal, she is so underrated, the only thing people bring up about her these days is 'No Wire hangers' 'Mommie dearest' or obssessive cleaning, truly sad that people dont care to learn about the real Joan
The only issues that were a slight turn off for me was some ideological racism floating around...Why is it that when there is a prison sequence that Afro-American people always appear, given that Blacks rarely intervene, or are seen in other social spaces? All of sudden the great Louise Beavers appears in a bit role, as a symbol to show us how far Mary Turner has "fallen from grace" in having to share shower with a Black woman. Then, Kent Douglas refers to his Japanese valet as "yellow peril"!
This a great Pre-Code - early Talkie Crawford gem! Not seen for years, we should thank WB Archives for releasing it. Joan's performance has dated little in 80 years---just shows what good direction can do. Curiously, the film does away with some of the important exposition that is in the Norma Talmadge silent version, i.e. the dept store theft. Marie Prevost and Kent Douglas are likewise great in their support of the star. Douglas, in particular, turns in a very naturalistic performance.
Wow...what gritty realism even in just this little clip. Can't wait till my copy of this arrives. Speaking of Norma Shearer, this was a role that she rejected and landed in Joan's lap. Like The Letter and Rain, Within the Law, the play on which Paid was based, the central role of Mary Turner was one of those roles actresses cut their fangs on.
i CAN"T wait to see this! purchased it and waiting until the fall to see it for various reasons.......like another user posted,,,OF course it is from warner archive and its a DVD R,,,which means it is NOT sold in stores(u have to special order), very expensive (25 bucks or more),NOT restored(fuzzy and grainy) and DOES NOT PLAY ON A COMPUTER ! ONLY on a real home dvd player or portable dvd player,.,,,,but it's all worth it bec its supposed to be one of her best roles,,,,,,
May I add that it was during this era (1929-1931) that Joans career was hottest. Her pictures consistently were raking in more than Shearer or Garbo.
In those early MGM years, Paid is a rare instance where a film planned for Norma Shearer actually did go Joan's way, because Shearer was pregnant with Irving Thalberg Jr. But Joan also wanted The Divorcee, The Trial of Mary Dugan, A Free Soul and Idiot's Delight -- and Norma got them all.
Yes but at the end JOAN got the last laugh. 80 years later you say Joan Crawford and you dont need an explanation. You say Norma Shearer and people say Norma WHO????
well, maybe in your town. In NEw YOrk City they Dont even Have Norma Shearer Revivals. Joan is constantly throughout the year with one or two pictures showing in at least one cinema
Joan Crawford is the epitome of the movie star, Queen of Hollywood, she was the greater flapper in the '20s, the leading comedy star in the '30s, the lady of the drama in the '40s and '50s, star in horror films in the '60s and even starred on tv in the '70s, Joan could play everything, a bitch, a devoted mother, most evil woman, classy grand style lady, murdered, etc
Norma Shearer mae her career because of her marriage with head of MGM Irving Thalberg. What happened with Norma career when Thalberg died ???Shearer career was too short
I like them both, honestly. But Shearer was a star before she married Thalberg and for years after he died. I love watching Shearer movies for sure, but Crawford was a better actress.

This is racist. Imagine! Joan having to bathe with a black! If black women were not
maids, then they were criminals.

Norma Shearer >>> Joan Crawford

Joan only got this role cause Norma Shearer became pregnant. This would make a great double feature on dvd with The Big House.
