....actually, quite informative and entertaining video. Just in case you play trumpet or another brass instrument, I think you might find some trumpet and brass tutorials quite intriguing over at YOURBRASSINSTRUCTOR's Channel.
I got to see Lew and the band when they played the Civic Auditorium in Portland, OR in '81. They played acoustic with only a mic on the bass and piano. Great stuff.
Oh, and without a mic Lew was free to travel more.
Another unbelievable solo by Lew. It was an honor to talk to him a little bit at the AQ and get his spin on things. By the way Mosaic has released a 3 CD set of the big band. It covers their 5 studio albums from '74-'77. Fantastic stuff!
In 1978 when this band was playing the San Francisco Bay Area; I made the mistake of taking my girlfriend (who didn't understand jazz) to a concert. When Lew started doing his "walking thing" while playing an extended solo, my girlfriend started cracking up. She said he looked like a schoolboy standing in line wanting to pee really badly. After that, I couldn't keep a straight face whenever I saw Lew doing his "walk" at other concerts. Phil Woods occasionally did the same thing. Funny.
I don't know what SHE called it, but the chord changes are based on the song "Lover" .... which many jazz artists have recorded. This is the best work I've heard by Lew Tabackin. Does anyone know when this was filmed?
This Akiyoshi song/arrangement is titled "Chasing After Love" (in reference to Richard Rogers' "Lover"). It was first recorded by the Toshiko Akiyoshi - Lew Tabackin Big Band in 1978 on their Victor release "Salted Gingko Nuts. It was also recorded on two later Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra live albums - 1992's "Carnegie Hall Concert" (Columbia) and 2004's "Last Live in Tokyo" (Warner Japan). I'm guessing this particular performance came from 1978 or 1979 in any case no later than 1982.

Wonderful. Is the baritone saxophonist Bill Byrne?
katella12 3 years ago
Probably. According to album liner notes, Bill Byrne was with the band in the late 70's through 1982.
