@27359 Ionel, Ionelule is a pre-WWII "cafenea" song from Romania. It's from the rich Romanian folklore music and lyrics-wise. If you listen to it on YT from the lyrics: Cand se duce lumea la culcare...etc. you'll see that Saban simply "copied and pasted" it to be the Gypsy "anthem". BTW, despite common misinformation and custom, it's not "Roma" but "Droma" that's the politically correct word. I'll let the linguists explain the "why". It's an Indian term not Romanian (a European Thracian people).

@Romanisipunctum Music of this song may have made by gadje but roma made the words in romanes and it was accepted as romany anthem! There is different lyrics, different melody, more verses etc, Gelem Gelem its mutch more than Ionel, Ionelule..

Droms also right but them are mostly from arabia and Rhoms is mostly in europe and there is also Lomavren they are mostly in caucasian..

Rom means man or husband in romanes so it was accepted as an common name for Romani by Romani language

@Romanisipunctum I try it to use translators for Ionel, Ionelule to compare gelem gelem but i could not find the similiarty in them and even the music sounds totally different from melody and there for the story it brings but i could understunt if the gelem gelem creater were insipired by Ionel, Ionelule music becouse there were some similiarties in some parts of music but as some ppl sayd to me that us have stole this song from Ionel, Ionelule that i cannot see or hear,

The melody of these lyrics is the original Romanian fokloric song which was borrowed the melody from by the authors of the Djelem.

The Gypsies from Romania know this full well, since they performed Ionel long before the Djelem composition.

@Romanisipunctum also i never heard the clear explanationg for these aclaims that gelem gelem is taked from Ionel, Ionelule.. i do not try to hate or dislike or anything its just something that i cannot see what is all this "fight" about, they are both beautifull songs! and i feel like i must say that as rhom i think that music is my anthem, even sound of wind or river can be my anthem..God Bless to you to brother!

@Tziganee It's OK! Borrowing Romanian tunes to create a country's/people's anthem has been done before.

For example, the Israeli anthem is also a Romanian song called:

Cucuruz (You Tube it).

Also, the Albanian anthem is based on the Romanian:

Pe-al nostru steag e scris unire.

It's just that these countries have always given credit to the Romanian origin of their anthems' melodies.

@Romanisipunctum Ok now i found good version that made sence, its quite alike as you sayd the melody on that part but its also quite different, atleast for me it sound mutch different as whloe but also similiar melody on parts. theres also many great performance on gelem gelem and they are bit different each other too but all is good music is good, thanks for information i learnd something new today.

@condicionalmalmente Slazem se da sve dolazi u svoje vreme.Ne bih vezivao izgled za kvalitet pogotovo ne u muzici pa makar kako savremena "sokacala" poboljsavala pevanje ili sviranje.A sto se tice rezima, Gospodja Olivera je pokazala svoje demokratsko opredeljenje jos davne 1996 godine hodajuci zajedno sa mnom i ostalima u demonstracijama protiv Milosevicevog vlastodrzja.Jest da je bila udata za politicara jakog u to vreme ali to nikakve veze nema sa njenim uspehom jer je uspeh imala i pre toga!
