@asaad2003 Music is the universal language.. Would you tell me what country you are from and what musician or singers you love most from that country ( I'm assuming you weren't born here in America but maybe that is incorrect. If so what music did your parents or grandparents listen to? )
@asaad2003 No reason you shouldn't love the song. Yes, it mentions Jesus, but the reference and the message are so non-traditional as to be universal.
@gilmancrush Absolutely! One of my Top 5 albums of all time. Can't think of another so flawless throughout. I don't think this piece of work has gotten the recognition it's due, sad to say.
@BellaDonna55 Kenny Rankin is another artist like Art-beautiful voice, guitar work, and interpretation of the song. Tonight i stumbled across a duet they did together called I Wonder Why on Youtube. Maybe you'd like it. My favorite Kenny Rankin song is his version of the Gordon Lightfoot song 'Pussywillows,Cattails" which is a little masterpiece about the sensual joys of the seasons--Gorgeous!
Ever since I heard "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" for the first time, have become greatest admirer of Art Garfunkel and of course Simon Paul. Each one of their songs are just beyond word - just beautiful, lyrical, philosophic, sweet etc.... etc..
Música para soñar despierto. Se me pone la piel de gallina. Ésta música te transporta a los sentimientos más nobles. La mejor canción de la historia, Estoy en otro mundo, pero es lo mejor que he oído.
It's not just that Art has one of the finest voices ever to appear on vinyl or CD that makes him such an enduring musical phenomenon, it is also his profound sensibility and musical intelligence. This, from Angel Care, his first solo LP, makes the point. Music of this quality never ages: it is for all time.
I love this song and when this album first came out, I played it all the time. Great voice, never get tired of hearing Art sing these beautiful songs.
This song is so beautiful and sad, but reflects a truth too often unknown. Art is the most awesome singer and I'll never understand how Paul Simon managed to outshine him. Art sings from his heart.
Although I love Paul Simon? As is the case with most artists, if you are too deep & too in touch with what you are trying to convey in your music or such? You lose most of your audience.
Art outshines most musicians of the last 100 years &it takes a very very good ear to appreciate the soul touching, uncanny ability to snag reality in his lyrics and that heavenly voice to create euphoria. . Art is very under rated, but some of us are on to him- and my life has been enriched as a result.
Until I saw the lyrics in writing I thought it ended "You had noticed a gem ..." and I still hear it like this. Anyway good song and the Angel Clare album is among the best.
Beautiful song. I dont tire of listening to it

Mary was an only child,
nobody held her, nobody smiled.
she was born in a trailer, wretched and poor,
and she shone like a gem in a five and dime store.
platano130 3 years ago 4
Mary had no friends at all,
just famous faces pinned to the wall.
all of them watched her, none of them saw
that she shone like a gem in a five and dime store.
platano130 3 years ago 3
And if you watch the stars at night,
and find them shining equally bright,
you might have seen jesus and not have known what you saw.
who would notice a gem in a five and dime store?

I do like this song too but I must say, I prefer the Demis Roussos version... I guess because it's the version I got to know first.

Love this song! How about adding "Down In The Willow Garden" by Art?
shapeepster 3 years ago
Beautiful song - I have heard so many versions of this song, and surprisingly I think Demis Roussos is the best - but I do like this version.

Wonderful hidden gem of a song. The mix on the Angel Claire CD that I have is a little brighter on the higher vocal harmony, which I prefer.
