Very nicely done! This video has inspired me to make a cover of meshuggah too one day! (Actually as soon as I buy my new drumkit, which is quite soon!). But for now I have some opeth, porcupine tree and katatonia drum covers. Go check em out if you feel like!
Oh, and if you doubt my credibility, check out my playalong to Spiteful, i recon that's at least 98% like they play it. Of course there's nothing wrong with playing it differently, but it's both fun and good for your playing to really meticulously study the style and song you're playing. :-)
@rasmushemse I don't doubt your credibility and I understand the existence of the ghost notes. We don't need to get into a pissing contest regarding who knows more about Meshuggah; I won't win, so you don't need to push your credibility on me. They're not my favorite band by any means, just a band that I enjoy and a song that I see covered extremely improperly. I pick and choose my song battles based on the quality of other covers of that song. And yes I watched your bass cover - great job! :)
Good job! MIssing the ghosts thru the whole song and also there's no bassdrum on the snare hits, watch their DVD Alive if you wan't to get really in to it :-)
The ghost notes on Alive are imperceptible (unfortunately), so I decided to go for a more powerful performance since I was asked to do that based on previous videos. Also, there are very few occasions where I hit the bass drum and the snare together, and I meant for them to be there - it was not because I can't hear the track. Part of the complexity of Meshuggah's polymeter song structures is that sometimes the 2 meet up and sometimes they do not.
The ghost notes are just linear on almost all their songs (in between the right hand, that usually plays hard 4ths and the 8ths between them), and they are not imperceivable, they are there for a reason. It creates a whole nother flow. The thing Haake always does, and i promise you i have studied this really carefully, is when they "should" meet up he just skips the bass drum on that particular 16th or 16 traid-note. It creates more spread and gets rid of that over-boomy sound.
@rasmushemse Disregard this completely. Ghost notes are the new double bass, stick twirls, etc., and apparently if you don't do those, you suck(?).
Truth is, nobody would know Tomas is ghosting throughout any of Shuggah's work, because they're so inaudible in the mix. I could see if this were a cover of J Brown's "Funky Drummer" or ToP's "Oakland Stroke," but the lack of ghosts DO NOT make or break this song. They're a developed feel that comes with much time in playing a song.
Solid mate!

Sounds pretty close to me. I like how you improvise on the fills. You made this cover your own and that's cool.

@JNovalis And if I were covering those songs, the ghost notes would be there! :P
Thanks for the "backup" and compliment from a fellow drummer (and I much more skilled one I might add; check out his videos)!
