  • i know alot of guys that left the flight deck, joined other braches became infantry, cops, etc. all agree working the roof is the biggest rush theyve ever found. fly navy!

  • Many of the crashes had "happy endings" as these clips are on other sites. The Hellcat that caught on fire had the pilot rescued by cat officer on deck, suffering burns but survived (as written in an earlier post). The Helldiver nosed over but crew survived. I believe the one (early) that hit the island killed a photographer, but the pilot survived.

  • Incredible courage. Particularly that fellow who jumps up onto the plane. Was he mentioned in dispatches, given a medal, survive the war? What of the pilot, did he escape, continue to fight, buy that guy a beer everyday for life? I'd love to know.

  • nice music but it doesn't match what's going on in the video. Maybe something more

appropriate to the courageousness of the Navy guys.

  • @knightedwolf no it was an AD-1 sky raider that caught on fire on the edge of the deck.

  • from what i can find, the officer that jumped up on the Hellcat to pull the pilot out was Lt Walt Chewning, the catapult officer. This happened in November of 1943 on board the USS Enterprise as Air Group Six flew aboard off of Hawaii enroute to operations in the Marshall Islands.

  • WWII was more safety than modern carriers for carrier pilots.

  • At :52, the deck crewman ....ran into fire towards a spinning propeller that was obscured by smoke and fire. He leaped onto the burning airplane that was about to fall into the sea and be run over by the ship. That really choked me up.

  • The guy at 56 secs is an absolute hero and I hope he got a big award for his bravery...what a guy!

  • My uncle was a naval aviator in the Pacific in WW2. He had 4 carriers shot out from under him. That means 4 times he had to find some other tiny dot to land on. Survived. After the war he flew instrument planes through the mushroom clouds of early atomic testing. Test pilot for the B-36. Ended up working as an engineer One of the project engineers on the F-111. Lived into his 90's. God, what a gentelman.

  • The last plane shown crashing was my Uncle Hal H. Crabb, a Navy Hellcat who did 2 tours in the Pacific theater. He didn't die in that crash, he walked away, unhurt. Hard to believe- but true. He died last Thursday, March 3, 2011, at the age of 88.

  • @nancybrownlee Very touching information. Thanks for letting us know. Of course we've all seen that footage over and over through the years. Now we know the rest of the story. Thanks so much.

  • This is sad to see again. I hope all of them survived to see another day. But the guy with the bellylanding at 1:09 is like: "Sup guys?"

  • I didn't see a whole lot of tragedies here, actually...

I always loved the one where the guy jumps onto the burning Hellcat to pull the pilot out. There is a very famous photo taken from right in front of the plane of that exact incident...the guy is climbing onto the burning drop tank in the shot. Brave as hell, but sadly I can't remember his name. =(

  • dude play sad music not happy 70's music

  • I had totally forgotten about these until I saw them again.

  • :50 that guy is fearless

  • @username0u812ic Not necessarily "fearless"....he might have been scared as hell, but he did his job above and beyond the call of duty. He was a Cat Officer, George Something-or-other, I believe. I don't think climbing onto burning fuel tanks was in his job description, but he did it anyway.

  • very strange music / visual combo.

  • I wouldn't say these are tragedies, just some landing accidents. now Nagasaki that is shown at the end of the video that was a tragedy.

  • What about "forgotten japanese carrier tragedies" , or "forgotten whatever else country besides us carrier tragedies" ?

  • What about showing some respect and then moving on? The title itself says "Forgotten US Carrier Tragedies." You have the ability to search other nations carrier tragedies for yourself and even putting together and posting a "video response" to this one if you so desire.

  • GOD bless AMERICA !!!!!!!

  • Dear Perla, please don't waste your time replying to a person like "pudran." He's obviously not a gentleman for the language he's used. You can't expect much from people who enjoy watching a bull mercilessly butchered in a ring and call it a sport. I am an American of Italian descent. I'm very proud of my heritage. The Italians have given the world so much in art, music, literature, science. This ignorant person will never see that.

  • Dear PRUDAN FUCK SPAIN .

  • Templari? You cannot speak about Templari!! You are not worthy, sorry.

  • Why PRUDAN....... have you unprime comments in your channel????? Have you afraid of our comments? well then YOU are a CODARD my darling. I repeat you I am not a KID,therefore when you replay, write no bad words!!!!!!

  • Wow...that's some powerful stuff, thanks, may we never forget the sacrifices and tragities of the world wars.

  • YOU COWARD !!!!

  • Sorry I mistake the name of this GENTLEMAN is no PRUDAN,but PUDRANSEMARIKAS !!!!!Perfect.

  • Does the average person think about those lost in these tragedies everyday? I've come to see that most people don't even know about any of this. That's forgotten.

  • All these planes were returning with the crew wounded and the planes shot to bits. When you put yourself in their shoes its hard not to have your heart go out to them.

  • How can they be "forgotten" if you've made a video of them?????

  • At 56 seconds into the video, when the fighter crashes on deck, and is on fire, and is about to drop into the sea, take note of the guy who jumps up on the side of the plane trying to get to the pilot.

Same type of guys are cops, firemen, soldiers and just the people who put themselves at risk for others. They are a really small percentage of our population but they're very special.

  • Yeah, I noticed it too. But, he probably wasn't a cop or a fireman. He could have just as well been an accountant, a 7-11 clerk, a farm boy. All he saw was one of his comrades wasn't getting out of that plane and likely wasn't going to get out, unless somebody did something. Your military is full of guys like this.

  • @NYKevinNorth

I watched that twice it caught my eye, he never hesitated for even a second, a plane on fire that could explode and hanging on the edge, it could easily have toppled over into the sea. He never even slowed down, wow that's courage.

  • Thank you for this video. There were 60 Million people whom died, 6 Million jews and 54 Million american, german, french, russian, polish, englishmen, etc. Looking at those numbers I think a tribute should be TO ALL OF THEM whom lost their lives SO YOU AND I HAVE THE CHOICE to do better RIGHT THIS VERY MIN.

  • When you watch this..: Look at the guy on the runway with the signs after the second crash. :( It's so sad...

  • WHat? What happened to him?

  • He's devastated, he can't believe his eyes. Look how he falls.
