The world is already overpopulated, in my opinion. Population control measures will be eventually be required. It's already being done in Japan. Just imagine what the united states would look like with 5 times the current population. Long lifespan or not, at some point, we need to limit the number of children, otherwise, famine, disease and poverty will destroy society.
You're talking about SRS. This is not true of all procedures (there are different ways to perform SRS). For those that require hair removal, it's actually better to get electrolysis there, as it's more permanent.
Electrolysis is incremental... It takes lots of hours... You might as well start now, and not "save" for it... Then you can benefit from having less body hair sooner.
Laser works for some but the tried and proven electrolysis is the best way to go. Either way it HURTS as you can imagine with out novicane. What really hurt for me was the 20 or more anesthetic injections done prior to the hair zapping. The person doing the injections actually dulled two needles before she finished. I felt like a pin cushion. I also had quite a lot of bruising afterwards. Thankfully that is nearly two years behind me and I am post op 15 months as of this writing
That's even more difficult to do, in my opinion. How do you trsnsplant a spinal cord? What if the new body is not the same dimensions as the old one and it doesn't fit? And then, you still have to reconnect all the nerves to the spinal cord.
mmm... select a doner cadaver that would meet the dimensions! As I understand peripheral nerves do regenerate...though it would be damn tedious for the patient to wait for them to do so!
That would most likely require human cloning, but you still have the problem of transplanting the entire spinal cord without making this body unrecoverable.
Brain transplants are not medically practical at this point, but head transplants are. The first head transplant was successfully achieved in the 70's, and repeated in 2001 both by Dr. Robert J. White. The patient was a spider monkey that retained all cognitive functions after the surgery; brain function was preserved during surgery by cooling the brain. The monkey couldn't move of course, but Dr. White did not bother trying to repair the spinal cord. Head transplants are possible now!!!
A broken spinal cord is obviously rather annoying, but if this obstacle can be overcome, then perhaps brain transplants are not that far off into the future, assuming it can be done without damaging the brain.
understanding that the post-op trans vagina dos not have the same internal muscle structure as natal vagina, then how does it feel to men who penetrate it?
I think you might have to alter the DNA. I know that CAIS women (XY individuals that are completely insensitive to testosterone) develop a vagina, but they do not develop ovaries or a uterus... So the DNA might make a difference when it comes to reproductive organs. I'm not sure if you can develop fully functional female genitalia with male DNA... But if you can, there's still risks of problems with the fetuses (a Y chromosome in the eggs?).
Interesting perspectives on Brave new World. Seems to be well researched too ;)
Womb transplantations seems very feasible.
Brain transplantations? I don't believe that since during the development of the fetus the eyes etc. grow out from the brain. Also some of the neurons in the spinal chord have one metre long axons. Neurons don't have the ability to replicate themselves. For this reason a brain does decay with age. A cut neuron may however grow out by itself, which is very interesting.
There has been research into repairing the brain using stem cells, with the intent of curing diseases like alzheimer. I'm pretty sure I heard they had some success restauring the brain of mice. I don't know if they've done any human testing though.
There was abook written years ago, The Identity Matrix by Jack L. Chalker. They developed a identity cube, that stored your memories, your personality, your soul in essence. If we could couple that with cloning an entire body, one that is female (or male) by tweaking the development. Imagine the possibilities for Transsexuals. Of course, perhaps they could fix our brains and prevent all the agony of being in the wrong body in the first place. It is societal pressure that makes it agony for us.
Some of us post-op girls really do lubricate though. One theory is that it comes from the prostate gland, which I find difficult to believe, as how would any fluid produced there end up in the vagina? Another idea is that the vaginal cells have an ability to make limited secretion, a more likely theory.
I saw a report somewhere that states that the skin of the penis, when inverted to become the vagina, will change and become much like a "natural" vagina. In other words, the body adapts it so it may be possible that there is some lubrication after some time.
The best option we have medically is stem cells. The simple explanation is that we can make anything for anyone with them. Your body will not reject the parts, since they'll be programmed to match your DNA(or your DNA as female, where necessary). Stem cells have already been used to reverse heart disease, though its not yet understood how, and experiments on training the cells are getting going. Problem is that the US doesn't allow this research, so the procedures will be externally developed.
Stem cells do have another use. That is for breast augumentation. It is being done in Europe and Japan at the moment using fat and stem cells taken from fat. Google Stem cell breast implants for more imformation. Like any new technology it is expensive so those who can be patient should wait. I am older so I may go for conventional saline implants
At the first srs in Germany in the 30's the transplanted ovaries and uterus I believe, didn't work out. Would be great if they can make that work. I'll be too old however when that happens.....
I think there are ethical questions that will come up when these theories come to fruition. I can't imagine the religious zealots of the world would let a transsexual have a baby without putting up a fight over it. Unfortunately :( Still, it's exciting. Honestly, we are in a pretty good time to be a transsexual. A hundred years ago, I would simply be stuck in a boys body for life wether I liked it or not.
Actually, I think the technology / knowledge already exists to have a child with two mothers, it's just that the process is illegal and no doubt exhaustively expensive at this point, mainly because of most societies being against such 'extreme' forms of genetic or biological engineering; the act of creating a life is still held as 'sacred' to far too many people :(
Although I don't know I would suppose it happened already. Microinsemmination allows -one- female to have her own child. I know for sure it's done in animal breeding.
However, I fear medical research will turn up a definitive answer as to how transsexuality happens. I believe it may have something to do with certain dna sequences in our genes. If they can detect that very early, most parents probably choose abortion.
If people decide to have an abortion because the child might have a certain type of breast cancer (we had a fight about research about that over here recently) why not transsexualism?
I think there are too many different variations that can cause transsexuality for it to be easily detectable. Furthermore, parents may not want to abort a child because the child has a small percentage of chance of possibly being transsexual.
WHAT IF, though, there was a way to tap into the spinal cord's detailed signals... something like a micron-thin sheet sliced thru it that would transfer but read all signals.
And the copy of your body would have the signals fed into it. Suspended or whatever, that body would 'synchronize' with yours. It would grow up exercising.
I don't think the "growing up exercising" would be such an issue. If all we need to do is make the cloned body move, we could use a microprocessor to send impulses along the nerves and make it move just enough everyday. Stimulating nerves to make muscles move is not science fiction at all, and not such a big obstacle.
I'm waiting for nanobots. I think that seems like the best possibility.
Although I have been sitting here fantasizing about how someone's spinal cord signals could be read on the old body and slowly synchronized with the new (since it's all just signals). And how the old and new could be fitted with 'plugs' on all major veins and arteries so that the final "switch" could be done relatively quickly followed by the hours long surgery to remove the plugs and make the transfer permanent.
So interesting! Cloning the brain would be ethically impossible, for the copy of your body needs to grow up exercising (person with normal life) to fight atrophy. So it would be like killing someone to use the body. But the stem cells theory is very real.. "mutant mtf" would be the term. But it's all so far that in my view the solution would be making people born technically correct, with the same brain and gender and no diabetes, no colour blind etc. ..b4 grow DNA manipulation! 5* video!
The thing that facinates me if what you see is might be true, then eventually (As long as I freeze
my own sperm) then I could theoretically inpregnate myself.XD Then again, would there be the question of wether its someone elses wound?

i herd that you have to get your pelvic area laserd, or else your new vagina will grow hair on the inside because of the skin used to form it. :S

Apparently most can't tell the difference. I would guess it just feels fairly "tight" all the time.

Some girls who have vaginoplasty actually do lubricate a little.
As for stem cell research in the U.S., I don't think that will be a problem after mid January. :-)

Can't lubricate without the proper glands...

But the cells in a reversed penis aren't really "vaginal cells"... No offense...

Except that the lubrication comes from glands near the opening of the vagina, not from the skin...
