Why did you put a question mark at the end of Metal. It should be a exclamation mark! Of course there were alot of other "heavy" bands before Sabbath but none with the tonality of Tony. In my opinion Tony is the greatest guitarist of all time, sure he might not be technically as talented as guys like Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Van Halen etc etc but he has more soul than anyone else even more than the great Blues players.
@Wishiwasinthe70s Great! Man, you said the truth. Blackmore, Page, Slash and many others keep me high, excite with their powerful speed solos. But when I listen to Laguna Sunrise, the world seems to be complete. I think Tony is a modest man and he always limited his capacity. In BS he must play the Sabbath style, then H & H style etc. He said once on intervew he planned to do an instrumental album. Jesus, if this will come true... He's great on flute and he plays drums too!
Don't get to worried my fellow fan's of Tont Iommi. He has Lymphoma and it's curable in the early stage's so he's very lucky they found it in the early stage's.Rock'n Roll Heaven isn't ready for Tony any time soon.God bless Tony!
Watch the documentary "Heavy Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" and you will see that the interviewed guest, whether a guitarist, vocalist, bassist or drummer, gives credit to Black Sabbath and Tony Iommi for the metal we enjoy today. It is one of the best "Rockumentaries" ever made. The accident to Tony's hand in particular was a monumental event in and of itself, because he had to de-tune the strings in order to play, and the rest is history. \m/
According to Cracked, this man invented heavy metal due to having to adjust his playing style after having the tips of his middle and ring finger on his right hand severed off in an accident. So through adaptation, something new was born.
the RIFF MASTER and LORD OF METAL. not technically the best guitar player, but a genius where it counts - the riff. without it a song is nothing IMO.
@mkmytholigiesfan Iommi is a legend as well. He created Metal. Even though other bands had bits of it here and there Iommi created the sound that you would hear in every Metal song since he came in.
Jimmy Page is absolutely the greatest rock guitarist, followed by Ritchie Blackmore. However, I can't decide between EVH and Iommi for third place. Possibly, they're tied for third.

So Van Halen went back to the US and the support act for the re-scheduled recorded gig was a truly awful British band called Budgie. This meant that when Sabbath came on, the crowd were mustard keen and not all shouted out.
Great gig, but I never did get to see Van Halen play.
it's pretty cool how he was able to play with those fake finger tips. Every guitarist (with their entire hand) plays with the feel of it. Tony was able to play without even feeling the string on his ring or middle finger.
For the record, Jimmy Page did many heavy bluesy riffs and could somewhat be considered a heavy metal pioneer. What irks me (and the members of Zeppelin themselves) is when people call Led Zeppelin a heavy metal band, which they weren't. As the cliche goes, half their material is acoustic. Who ever used tritone-based riffs before the song Black Sabbath (1969)?
@Zoso0709 How in a fuck can you give credit to Page for pioneering Heavy Metal? Let me get it straight Black Sabbath was first Heavy Metal band and invented the genre and thanks to Toni Iommi for making it so awesome!!

He can solo but he's not epic at it. probably one of the more creative and innovative players of our time..shredding and playing fast isnt as difficult as people think..being innovative is real criticle thinking
When we wake up to the truth of life, inspired music like this will emerge and flourish again. Search "Truth Contest" in Google and click the 1st result, then open The Present and read what it says to learn the truth.
@nightlord47 Van Halen was an amazing guitarist, to the skill level that Iommi was in both speed, accuracy and creative ability. Van Halen recorded Eruption, one of the greatest guitar solos of all time in his very first album. Eddie essentially invented tapping which is commonly used in metal solos. I recognize that Tony Iommi was the greatest metal guitarist of all time, but dont talk shit about Van Halen unless you can back it up.
Tony Iommi invented Heavy Metal, Van Halen did not. So if you truly love metal then you owe Iommi. I don't know if Van Halen is any good cos I only know jump, but I have loved listening to Iommi and Sabbath and metal in general since I was 11 and I am 39 now.
Really stupid to say, "Oh this guys better cause he's more raw, or he's faster, or he has real skill" blah blah, In the end, the only thing that matters is the quality of the music they make together as a band! Sabbath isn't exactly my type of band, I prefer Zeppelin because their songs and themes appeal to me more! That right there is what makes a musician GOOD! His ability to channel his mind, thoughts, and feelings to his audience through his music.
for the time of this video probably it was something and basically that all matter , but now of course this is absolutely nothing compared with the level have reached today
@makistza This guitar playing is still good compared to todays guitarists. Most metal solos today are just really fast arpeggios and tapping which are, frankly, really easy to play. They require little originality and real skill. This type of soloing takes practice and it requires the guitarist to put his soul into it.
Anyone can have this ability if they put their minds to it. Take lessons, don't give up, and make an effort to learn music theory. This was probably first improvised. If it wasn't already improvised here.
i just realized how odd it is to say "i wish i had (insert guitar god here)'s hands." what you really want is their brain. that's the only way to truly sound like them. what does it matter if you have their hands? you're still gonna sound like yourself. if you take the hands of someone great, all that means is that we lost a god because he can't play without his hands. you need to be able to think like them to...just sayin' lol
haha i love tony dont get me wrong, but the argument over him or evh bein better should not be an argument. Evh could do anything iommi can do but better. Just as a comparison, watch evh's solo on live without a net, and then watch this, itll make iommis solo look like a fucked up bunch of unorganized notes put together. Its true, iommi is a legend of heavy metal no doubt about it. But if u wanna compare the skills of iommi vs evh, theres no compare. Id like to see iommi play spanish fly by evh
@00JesusChrist he's only lefthanded becuase his right fingers got chopped off he was originally right handed. he learned to be left handed. HOW NUTS IS THAT !
@liltookie17 Actually he was always left handed. The tips of his middle and third finger were cut off in a factory accident, and he made finger tips to put on so he could play.
Tommi had a fingers trauma caused by work on mechanic press. He had to make a finger overlay on his fingers and train hard and lot to get rhymes right. That made him what he is now - best guitarist among all Heavy Metal (I make an underline _ HEAVY METAL, not all of music. Randy Rhoads (r.i.p.) was greatest Hard Rock - Rock'n'Roll guitarist) players of all time. Who knows what could he become if he would never get that finger trauma...
@Shawn0HBK0Michales Yes, but because of that finger trauma, he had to loosen the strings of his guitar so could play more comfortably and that gave the world the heavy metal sound of Black Sabbath. Everything happens for a reason i guess!
why would you say his greatest streagth is songwriting... you need to do more research or something. geezer is the one that wrote most the songs >.>
and fuck vanhalen! how did they even get brought up on this video ?? not even the same class as sabbath! any real guitarist would know you have no idea what the hell you are talking about xD
@blksabbath69: What do you mean by "any real guitarist"? Certainly what I saw in this video doesn't qualify as "real guitar playing." Real guitar means Vai, Satriani, Petrucci...
Guys... the coolest thing about his guitar playing, and this solo is that the two middle fingers of his, were cut in half at an accident back in Aston when he was younger (prior to Black Sabbath). As you may be able to notice, the tips of those two fingers are fake, and normally he'd walk around with a bag filled with pieces of leather that he'd put on before a show.. Fucking insane man! ROCK n' ROLL!!! xD

IndieDrummer138 10 months ago
haha i love tony dont get me wrong, but the argument over him or evh bein better should not be an argument.

People comparing Mr Iommi with van halen hahahahahha ohh man...
People i'd give my left hand to have the skills of Tony Iommi.
And he is a left-handed.
00JesusChrist 11 months ago 82
@00JesusChrist
Left handed is no big deal, same shit, BUT he's also missing a finger tip from a machine accadent so if you look closely he wears a rubber nub
sausagenmuff 10 months ago 3
@00JesusChrist so you would have all his skill that dont involve his hands, was it worth it? WAS IT? SUCH A PRICE TO PAY
cooliovasquez 10 months ago
@00JesusChrist Iommi is the RIFF MASTER, Eddie's riffs are all right...
santanaincubus 9 months ago
@00JesusChrist eddie van halen's better- i mean tony's good but all he did is a to of hammer ons and pull offs- nothing really that amazing
012jack012 8 months ago
@00JesusChrist he's only lefthanded becuase his right fingers got chopped off he was originally right handed. he learned to be left handed. HOW NUTS IS THAT !
liltookie17 8 months ago
@liltookie17 Actually he was always left handed. The tips of his middle and third finger were cut off in a factory accident, and he made finger tips to put on so he could play.

left handed power!!
88JudasMAN88 11 months ago
Tommi had a fingers trauma caused by work on mechanic press. He had to make a finger overlay on his fingers and train hard and lot to get rhymes right. That made him what he is now - best guitarist among all Heavy Metal (I make an underline _ HEAVY METAL, not all of music. Randy Rhoads (r.i.p.) was greatest Hard Rock - Rock'n'Roll guitarist) players of all time. Who knows what could he become if he would never get that finger trauma...
Shawn0HBK0Michales 11 months ago
@Shawn0HBK0Michales Yes, but because of that finger trauma, he had to loosen the strings of his guitar so could play more comfortably and that gave the world the heavy metal sound of Black Sabbath. Everything happens for a reason i guess!

and happy birthday Mr Iommi!
HILTON1MASTER993 11 months ago
@damillionmalania
why would you say his greatest streagth is songwriting... you need to do more research or something. geezer is the one that wrote most the songs >.>
and fuck vanhalen! how did they even get brought up on this video ?? not even the same class as sabbath! any real guitarist would know you have no idea what the hell you are talking about xD
blksabbath69 11 months ago
@blksabbath69: What do you mean by "any real guitarist"? Certainly what I saw in this video doesn't qualify as "real guitar playing." Real guitar means Vai, Satriani, Petrucci...
progrockkeyboardist 11 months ago
@progrockkeyboardist
did you just say tony cant play guitar o.o
blksabbath69 11 months ago
@blksabbath69: Of course he can, but he is by no means the greatest guitarist.
progrockkeyboardist 11 months ago
notice he barely used his pinky. to do something like that with only 3 fingers is fuckin insane.
and not to mention half of 2 of his fingers are missing
definitely one of the greatest guitar players of all time.
HAIL TONY IOMMI
sprayboy666 11 months ago 4
Guys... the coolest thing about his guitar playing, and this solo is that the two middle fingers of his, were cut in half at an accident back in Aston when he was younger (prior to Black Sabbath). As you may be able to notice, the tips of those two fingers are fake, and normally he'd walk around with a bag filled with pieces of leather that he'd put on before a show.. Fucking insane man! ROCK n' ROLL!!! xD
