How come no one expects the nation's Catholics to abandon their Church full of child molesting priests and their many enablers and apologists?? What a ridiculous racist double standard that we expect Obama to denounce his crazy pastor (an ex-Marine who HAS helped the poor - he's not 100% crazy) while no one expects McCain to denounce the support of the Pat Robertson/Jerry Falwells nutjobs on the right?? Why can't people see this is cynical fear-mongering and manipulation? WAKE UP AMERICA.
Because the Catholic Church does not promote child molestation. Rev Wright promoted an anti-America and anti-White agenda from his pulpit.
John McCain was not a member of the churches of Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell. If you are unable to recognize the difference between an individual who supports a candidate and an individual who is identified as a "Spiritual Mentor" for 20 years then you are irrational.
The Catholic Church may not have promoted child molestation but they were well aware of it and did NOTHING to stop it. That is a far greater evil than a preacher ranting conspiracy theories about the U.S. govt. He was exercising free speech, as was his right. He wasn't aiding and abetting child molesters. Those priests ruined lives. Yet no one expects Catholics to denounce the Church. Talk about irrational! Total double standard.
I find it impossible to defend the Catholic Church for the evil that has taken place in their facilities and by their leaders. I do not, however, agree that "no one expects Catholics to denounce the church", rather I believe that every normal individual absolutely expects this denunciation of the individuals who are guilty of committing, supporting and/or hiding these horrible acts.
But the problem is deeper than just the individual priests. Many of the higher-up clergy aggravated the problem by transferring abusive priests to other parishes rather than defrocking them. So there's clearly a serious problem with the institution itself. If it's legitimate to demand that Obama leave a Church that has done good social work because some of its pastor's VIEWS are offensive, it's even more legitimate to demand that Catholics abandon the Catholic Church for their criminal actions.
Obama has either knowingly supported a racist America hater for 20 years OR he lacks the basic judgement necessary to select quality Presidential advisors.
Your comment reveals ignorance of the complexity of the issue of race in the U.S. Obama became part of that church because he wanted to create a bond with the black community in Chicago. His goal was community organizing, helping poor black folks, bringing different types of people together. Most black preachers have some crazy ideas, but that doesn't mean Obama should have turned his back on the black community in Chicago. It was n't bad judgment at that time.
I recognize the issues that you suggest led to Obama to this church and suspect they are true. They are self-serving - done to promote his leadership in the black community. Regardless of his motivations to join and attend this church, it does not change the racist and anti-American propaganda presented from the pulpit to all the parishioners including Barrack, his wife and children. I can never support for President anyone who allows these comments to be routinely taught to his children.
"Self-serving"?? Obama's goal was to HELP poor black people in Chicago. How is that selfish? Also, since Obama clearly doesn't share Wright's beliefs, it's hardly indoctrination if his children were sometimes exposed to other viewpoints, even offensive ones. Education is all about being exposed to different views and then forming one's OWN opinions. To shelter your kids from any views you disagree with is actually far worse. And Obama's efforts to help the poor make him an excellent role model.
Obama's goal was to become a leader, Rev Wright and the church were tools to reach that end. If Obama did not support the views of Rev Wright then why was this church consistently the largest recipient of donations from Obama? Finally, children need to be sheltered from some view points until they are mature enough to make decisions for themselves. To allow these children to grow up seeing Rev Wright as a respected role model is exactly what the Obama's have done.
If Obama donated it was surely to support community outreach efforts. RE: kids, you are totally ignorant of what kinds of conversations when on in that family, and equally ignorant of the extent to which the kids heard Wright's controversial views. Finally, if the kids were old enough to understand Wright's positions, they were old enough to discuss them with their parents. Black kids in particular SHOULD be knowledgable about what many in their community think. Sheltering them isn't the answer
fuck I hate this shit finding myself in the same court that the republicans are, you can't rationalize this crap, the Democratic party it's loosing face by supportng this Obamination. and if Obamas supportes think the Republicans goin to let this one go you are fucking delusional!!! You think the Republicans are going te let STALIN BEING THIS NATION'S SPIRITUAL ADVISOR I WANT TO HAVE WHATEVER YOU ARE SMOKING.
Hardly a fan of FOX, but let's be serious here! This issue is a real one & Obama needs to be scrutinized. If this was Hillary's pastor saying these words the whole nation would be tearing her front door down! Why wait to distance yourself now if you already knew about these comments last year? Seems a bit hypocritical to hang your mentor of 20 yrs out to dry...at this juncture. I would have been more impressed if he had stuck by Rev. Wright. Obama isn't ready - he lacks leadership skills!
Obama sits back and his own mother getting insulted by Rev. Wright, since his mother is a White. So if he can not defend his own mother, what kind of man Obama is ?????????????. I am sure, we all will stand by our mother or father. Don't you think so ???
And of course, pastor Jeremiah Wright IS A FORMER MARINE.
None of these creeps have spent a single day in uniform. Let them be Black in South Carolina, in the US Marine Corps in 1961 and EARN the right to say 'God Damn America'.
"In a presidential campaign where you talk about loving your country, patriotism, etc."
Yes, having an outspoken pastor is something like war crimes, war profiteering, illegal wiretapping, screwing pages, fixing elections, breaking international laws on torture and the treatment of prisoners, lying to Congress, or describing the Constitution of the United States as 'a piece of paper'.
Saying 'God damn America' in a sentence that is part of a sermon... why, that is just going too far. :-/
You seem to have assumed that Wright is a bad man. He is not.
Alot of what he said was inflammatory and insensitive, but I hear nothing that does not show his love for his country. One does not say "God Damn America" in that way and not love the U.S.A..
He condemns it for what he feels it has done wrong. Aside from the creation of the AIDs virus, his words have a fair amount of truth in them if the content is examined without anger or prejudice.
rather had a land invasion of Japan? The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were in direct response to 9/11. Rightly or wrongly. And Hamas does some good but they are still terrorists. Is wright a bad man? No just a bad pastor, preaching hate and divisiveness
He said "God damn America" while slamming the USA for sponsoring terrorism, which it did.
Those are the words of an angry patriot, a man disapointed that his country is not living up to its own ideals. They are not the words of an anti-American.
In response to the land invasion, I do not presume to speak for him, but you know this is a debated topic, with critics on both sides. I agree with you nuking the cities was the right thing to do, but Wright is not isolated on this issue.
And condemning him for his general style of preaching, rather than specific statements of his, is to condemn every preacher influenced by black liberation theology. They are prevalent throughout the country, and they are no better or worse than any other group of mainstream preachers to me.
If your are an "angry patriot" might'nt you ask they "see the light" rather than asking
god to damn an entire nation? No, he points
his finger and revels in what he considers ret
ribution against "white America". Instead of
offering solutions he castigates and condemns
He is the worst kind of bigot, wrapping himself in scripture and excoriating "rich white people" and playing the race card. Why add white? Why not just rich people? No he is
I apologise for not being clear. I have been making similar arguments over many threads and it tends to blur together.
I do not deny that Wright has a degree of racism. It is the same kind of fire that you will see in the vast majority of blacks of his generation, who were in their prime during the civil rights movement.
Saying America is controlled by "rich white people" is true, and there is no denying this has alot to do with racism.
Wright was a Marine, for chrissake. Clearly he feels a bond to this country. The anger he expresses about the U.S. is understandable to a degree - the U.S. is guilty of slavery, lynchings, Jim Crow, and in the Bush Jr. era, starting bullshit wars, sending thousands of young Americans to their pointless deaths, and stripping our civil rights away. Yeah, Wright's anger is irrational and crazy, but you have to understand that his anger STEMS from a legitimate place.
What bothers me is his church was cheering on these comments! It shows that they're use to this rant... which he's done again and again! It's outrageous for Obama to say he had no idea!
There is nothing outrageous about that. Wright has preached plenty of great sermons.
That Obama was not present for the handful of bad ones that have been highlighted and therefore never heard of them is not only believable, it is logically and statistically likely.
You obviously didn't read my comment. And by the way, to say Obama didn't know about these comments is absurd. He began distancing himself from his pastor when he began his presidential candidacy because he knew of "controversial comments." However, I was speaking of how the congregation was cheering as the pastor said those words.
Yes I did. I just didn't elaborate due to trying to keep it in one post.
Wright has preached plenty of great sermons, he has done a huge amount of good for his community. Alot of what Wright said (with exception of the U.S.A. creating the aids virus) has a fair amount of resonating truth about it, hitting on emotional strings that people harbour resentment upon.
Were they inflammatory and insensitive? Yes, very much. It is still true that America sponsored state terrorism.
Obama has himself said that he found out about 2 of the sermons before he announced his candidacy. He snipped Wright from his speech to announce his candidacy.
However, due to longstanding ties with Wright, who has preached plenty of great sermons far outnumbering the bad ones, done so much good for the community and been his spiritual mentor for so long, he did not want to sever ties to his pastor so ruthlessly.
I would have been suspicious of his moral character had he done so.
Obama sits back and his own mother getting insulted by Rev. Wright, since his mother is a White. So if he can not defend his own mother, what kind of man Obama is ?????????????. I am sure, we all will stand by our mother or father. Don't you think so ???
That really has no connection. Obama's mother married a black man twice, she is obviously not racist. Wright's racially charged comments slam white racist Americans.
For example, when Reverend Wright talked about having taxis drive right by because their drivers don't want to pick up a black man, it is obvious he wasn't saying all taxi drivers were racist.
Bottom line to all of this is that we need to live in Today.
Wright and his ilk....never ever ever speak of the incredible advances over the past century for black people and racial harmony.
We've come a very very long way.
Wright sees the world through his rear view mirror, not his windshield. The man is backing up...and wants others to back up with him.
Obama's carefully constructed election platform looked forward. Wright has shown us what politics is.

You and the rev are entitled to your opinion.
However the vast majority of Americans would disagree and would certainly not vote for a man who would agree. Unless Obama can convince
the voters that he disavows Wright this is
another piece of baggage he will have to pull
uphill to the whitehouse. Assuming he wins the dem nomination. Most Americans are still patriotic and believe in our capacity for good
and love this country in spite of its' mistakes Not perfect but far from an evil empire
